CONCLUSIONS

The absence of a cohesive set of criteria with which to define domestication, has given rise to confusion concerning the identification of domesticated versus wild animals. Depending upon the criteria used by the analyst, animal domestication may be deemed present or absent at a site. A synthetic, four phase, model has been attempted in this paper based, in many parts on ideas proposed by various researchers, and quoted here, who have worked on the topic of domestication. The strength of this model lies not only in that it synthesises much of what has been proposed to date, but in that it relies upon known biological processes applied today in animal breeding and farming of wild species. The case study of the southern Levant presented here has pointed out some of the "anomalies in the ruling paradigm" (in a Kuhnian sense; Kuhn, 1962), and how these may be explained using a set of well defined criteria as outlined in the model. Many of the criticisms apply to other regions where similar criteria have been used to assess domestication. By investigating these anomalies, I have suggested some "new" answers to an "old" question, though numerous aspects of this model need to be clarified through analysis of larger, well excavated faunal assemblages.
