In addition to the above. a palatal glide can occw- between a consonant and a following a, u, or o, as indicated in the following syllables: xii

Though KenkyDsha indicates long vowels within a single syllable by a long mark (e.g., kO, gO, etc.), in this dictionary the long vowels of Japane.o:e are written double (uu, oo, etc.) Geminate consonants are spelled double as well (u, pp, e.tc.). The symbol n stands for a syllable-final nasal phoneme that assimilates to the initial consonant of the following syllable within the word (e.g .. shinpai (~impay] 'worry' , ka!~Ui (kat]key] 'relationship') and is realized in word-final position as a nasalized version of the preceding vowel (e.g., han [hOO) 'book', shinbun ~imbuu] 'newspaper'). ln Tokyo dialect, the g in syllable-initial position is usually pronounced I'll word-internally (e.g., Mgi [neqi] 'green onion'). The location of the pitch accent, although marked in KenkyOsha's Romanization, is omiued in all Japanese loan sources given in this dictionary. The original Palauan-English Dictionary conlains a Ill-page Englisb-Palauan finder list. Whereas !he fonnat of !his finder list has not been changed in this volume, !he list itself has been autOmatically expanded 10 rcncct the thousands or new and revised Palauan entties and their meanings. In the finder list, the arrow notation -+ is used to indicate the major entty under which a particular multi- word expression is listed. In working on !his expanded dictionary, I have spent countless hours in discussion and consultation with native speakers and olhers dedicated to Palau and !he Palauan language. For helping me bring our catalog of knowledge about Palauan to its current state, I offer my heartfeltthan.ks 10 Rornana Anaslaeio, Masaaki Emesiochl, Theodosia Faustino, Robe colon [:) indicates the extra length. The sequence rr differs from r in that it is pronounced

Introduction as a trilled r ralher lhan a flapped r. A lrilled r (phonetic symbol:[l')) is composed of two or lhree flapped r's pronounced in rapid succession. The words below iUusltlue t.he Palauan sequences 11 and rr in various positions: /le/ kall

J. The words ofPalauan can consist of different numbers of syllables, or pulses of air. It is fairly easy to count syllables: for example, kar 'medicine' has one, elil 'yesterday' has two, medengelterir 'knows them' has five, and so on. When any consommt occurs before a vowel, it is pronounced along with that vowel as pan of the same syllable. Thus. in bilek 'my clothing', b is part of the first syllable and I is pan of the second. When cenain types of consonants-specifically, the nasals m and ng, the lateral I, and the flap r- occur before other consonants in word-initial position, they become syllabic-that is. they are pronounced as separate syllables. To indicate this syllabic quality in the phonetic ~rnnscription, a dot is placed under the regular phonetic symbol for the sound in question. Thus, in the examples below, we find [m). (?)• [Q), [!],and [r).

mchiielak nglim ngduul /mange/ ltel rsechek rtangcl

[~?eJch] [!laJJ~II

'drunk (up)' 'clam' •cry'

Syllabic r ([rJ) is pronounced as a lriUed r by some speakers and wilh considerable friction by others. The only exception to the analysis given above concerns the sequence m/, as in mlai [mlay] 'canoe'. Here. them is not syllabic but is pronounced along with the other sounds in the word as pan of a single syllable. VoweLS. The leners used to spell the vowels of Palauan are i, u, e, o, nod a. A. The high vowels i (high front) and u (high oock) occur in the following words: Word.~ wilh i (phonetic symbol: [i]):

slls

[ptu?] [bul)) [runh]

lnlroducrion Note !hat !he use of !he letters y and w fori and u. respectively, has been discontinued in current standard Palauan spelling. 8. The mid vowels are e (mid-front or mid-cenD'al) and o (mid-back). While the letter o (phonetic symbol: (o)) has only one pronunciation, e has two different pronunciations. The letter c represents the "eh" (open e) sound (phonetic symbol: [e)) found in Palauan ked [ke.d] 'hill', as well as the weaker, somewhat ind.istinct "uh" sound (known as "schwa"- phonetic symbol: ("])in the lirst syllable of cherik [?:>tikh) 'my disUke' . The Palauan vowel "schwa" ((\l)) has a very restricted distribution, si.nce it occurs only in unsrressed syllables. Every Palauan word of two or more syllables has just one slressed syllable, with the remaining syllables unstressed. 1t is usually not too difficult to identify the stressed syllable in such words, since thi.s syllable tends to be louder and stronger than the nearby syllables. For practice, compare the stressed syllable with the unstressed syllables in words like k/Ukuk ' tomorrow', menge/ebed 'hit', ngldlm 'your name', and chillelx:d6k 'hit me'. To identify the stressed syllable in all main and subentties in this dictionary, a srress mark (" ) has been placed over the vowel which is found in it; this stress mark. however, is not used in the Palauan spelling system. Because bolh open e ([e)) and schwa ([g]) can occur in unstressed syllables in Palauan, the use of the single letter e does not give any clue as to which pronunciation is heard. This. of course, is no problem for native speakers of Palauan, who automatically know the correct pronunciation of words in !heir language, but it may cause difficulties for non-native speakers. Therefore, the following practice has been adopted in this dictionary: if a spelled e in an unstressed syllable is pronounced as an open e ((e)), this fac.t is indicated by a full phonetic transcription of the word in question; if, however, the spelled e in an unstressed syllable is pronounced as a schwa ([a]), !hen no phonetic tmnscription is provided. The latter case occurs much more frequently than the former. In the Palauan words below, the letter e is pronounced as an open e ([e)):

sers ngklcl ched kedeb deledaes

(secs] CukleiJ [?ell]

'garden' 'his name' •tide' 'short' 'free Lime' 'yesterday'

Note that in the first four examples, the [e] pronunciation occurs in a stressed syUable, while in the last two words it occurs in an unstressed syllable. In tl>e following examples, the letter e is pronounced as a schwa((~]):

/mange/ mengat de/angeb

Introduction In every case., lhe schwa pronunciation occurs in an unstressed syllable. When a word ends in a sequence of two consonanL~. !his cluster of consonantS is often followed by a shon schwa sound. Because !his schwa is automatically added after two consonanL~ and is therefore predictable, it does not need to be indicated by an e in !he spelling, as lhe following words illustrate: bsibs

The letter o is observed in the following words:

C. The low vowel a (phonetic symbol: [a]) appears in the following examples: chad ngak alii

[?a01 [gakh) [aJiy]

'person' 'I'

'hey!'

D. All the vowels of Palauan except a can occur long. These long vowels are spelled simply by doubling the letter-that is, we have ii. uu. u. and oo. Phonetically, Palauan long vowels arc indeed greater in length than the comsponding shon vowels, but they also have some other d.istinguishing features. All of the long vowels contain a gliding articulation. The front vowels i and e are followed by a y-glide (phonetic symbol: [y)) when long, while the back vowels u and o are followed by a w.glide (phonetic symbol: [w]). The list below conmins words with long vowels: diil ngii buuch

'nail' 'near'

'cigarette' 'playful'

E. The vowels of Palauan can appear in various kinds of combinations or clusters. or the two adjacent vowels, one or the other may be stressed, or-less frequemly-neither may be stresSed. Given only the Palauan spelling of words con· taining vowel clusterS, it is very difficult to predict lhe correct pronunciation. This is because some or the (spelled) vowels arc pronounced differenOy depending on whether or not tl1ey are stressed and whether they precede or follow the adjacent vowel. The examples below illustrate some of the many possibililies:12

We must give special auention to the problem of when and when not tO spell a word with a final vowel cluster ei. A good number of Palauan words which end in e when spoken wilhin a sentence take a word-final i in isolation or at the end of a sentence. The sentence.~ below, which contain tni!i 'come' and chei 'fishing·, illustrate this variation in pronunciBtion: (I) (2)

a. A Droteo a mti. b. A Drotco a mt er a blik. a. N g mo er a chci. b. Ng mo er ache er a klukuk.

'Droteo is coming.' 'Droteo is coming to my house.' 'He's going fishing.' 'He's going fishing tomorrow.'

Tile rule of spelling lnvotvea ncrc is similar to lllat obscrvea for wora-Onal ng: namely, if word-final i is pronounocd and heard, as in {la) and (2a), it is also spelled; however, if no i is pronounced or heard, as in (lb) a.nd (2b). it is not included in the spelling. When appearing as main or subemries in this dictionary, words like mei 'come' or chel'fishing' arc given in the longer form. FUR'IllllR Jlflmaybe). syn. aJ1a1.
