FOREWORD A remarkable growth has been observed in the area of educational testing and assessment and its relation to the process of learning in higher education over the past ten years. There is no doubt that education, when imparted in the native tongue of the learners inculcates far better learning and thereby yields better results. The National Testing Service-India (NTS-India) has produced and published more than sixty volumes of materials in English and various other Indian languages under different series such as Glossary of Evaluaiton Terms, Introduction to Evaluation Terminologies, Tests of Language Proficiency, Concept based Continuum of Graded Syllabi, etc. The present manuscript "Glossary of Evaluation Terms in Kannada" is an initiative to facilitate teaching-learning process in Kannada language. The 'Glossary of Evaluation Terms in Kannada' consists of about 1000 key terms in two lists, viz., 'Kannada to English' and 'English to Kannada'. The terms are from the disciplines of education, linguistics, literature, personality, psychology, statistics, etc. that together represent the concepts used in the area of educational testing and evaluation. The present work is a milestone in the march towards achieving the goal and vision NTS-India. After translating the terms from English to Kannada, the task of finalizing Kannada parallels / equivalents has been accomplished during a series of workshops. In these workshops, renowned professors / academicians / professionals from related disciplines and backgrounds were invited to correct, modify or evaluate the manuscript and to provide their suggestions in this regard. The manuscript is published after a consensus was reached for the appropriateness and adaptability of the Kannada parallels / equivalents. v

Thanks are due to all professors, academicians, professionals, etc. for their support and guidance. The overall work related to this manuscript, from beginning to the publication has been looked after by the NTS-India team presently headed by Mr. Pankaj Dwivedi, Lecturer cum Junior Research Officer. I am sure this work will prove to be an asset for the scholars who are involved in teaching-learning of Indian Language Pedagogy, especially in the Kannada language, at any of the seven levels of general education. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT It gives me great pleasure and a sense of happiness to present this Glossary on Evaluation Terms comprising of around 1000 terms representing various disciplines of education in Bengali. This achievement seems to be very satisfactory keeping in view the short span of ten years of the existence of NTS-India. This gives us more strength and energy for bringing out more and more academic materials on testing and evaluation. At the outset, I would like to extend my heartfelt regards and gratefulness to Prof. D.G. Rao, the Director of CIIL, Mysore for his constant encouragement and guidance during the development of this material. I am also thankful to Prof. Pon Subbiah, Founder Head, NTS-I as the initiation of the preparation of the base materials was made under his guidance. Thanks are also due to Dr. M. Balakumar, Former Head of NTS-I for his leadership in the preparation of manuscript. Mr. M. Manjunatha, Mr. B.M. Lingaraj, Mr. M. Nanjunda Swamy, Mr. B.S. Suresha, Ms. R. Asha, Ms. R. Mamatha Nath, Dr. S. Puttaraju and Ms. M. Sheela (Resource Persons for Kannada language in MILES Project) were involved in the preparation of the Kannada parallels. Several scholars representing the disciplines of language and literature have participated in workshops and finalised the Kannada glossary. They include Dr. H.S. Umesha (Education), Prof. Somashekara Gowda (Language), Prof. Lakshminarayana Aurora (Language), Prof. Venkatesh Kumar (Psychology), Prof. T.S. Venugopal (Statistics), Prof. C.G. Venkataramana Shetty (Education), Prof. G.H. Parvathamma (Education), Prof. K. Yeshodhara (Statistics), Dr. Y.C. Banumathi (Language). All of them have played a significant role in finalizing the base material and extended their whole hearted support in the workshops for its development. My sincere thanks are due to every one of them. vii

Dr. Narayan Kumar Choudhary, Assistant Director (Admin); Shri Aleendra Bramha, Head of the Publication and Shri Tariq Khan, Academic Secretary of the institute have given full support to the publication activity of the NTS-I. My sincere thanks to all of them. Ms. Vishalini composed and corrected the material. Mr. N. Jeykumar of NTS-I made the layout design. Sri. H. Manohar, Artist of CIIL designed the wrapper. All of them deserve our sincere thanks. Apart from the above colleagues and friends, I am also indebted to many others who have contributed directly or indirectly to this work. Any suggestions for further modifications in this work are welcome from the academics and the readers and the comments will be taken into consideration and will be appropriately utilized in the next edition.

INTRODUCTION The main objective of this material is to provide Kannada language equivalents / parallels for about 1000 evaluation terms in English that represent the concepts drawn from various disciplines like language, literature, personality, psychology, statistics, education, etc. The source material for this work, is in English viz. An Introduction to Evaluation Terminology 3rd edn. (2008) authored by Pon Subbiah and published by the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysuru. It consists of two sections - the first one is Kannada to English and arranged in the Kannada alphabetic order and the second one is English to Kannada and arranged in English alphabetic order. While developing the parallels, the following points have been kept in mind : (i) Kannada parallels that are already in use and familiar to the users, have been retained (e.g., personality – vyaktitwa); (ii) if the term in English is a derived one, then the parallel in Indian language too is coined in the same way (e.g., measure, measurement - maapisu, maapana); (iii) though certain terms / items, phrases or terms are not accurately communicating the concepts, their inclusion has been preferred as they are already in use but representing more than one synonymous concepts. When new terms are proposed, the old ones in use are also retained (e.g., test - pariikshe / pariiksha¸a); (iv) certain terms like ‘unit’ has a number of synonymous terms such as 'part', section, etc., causing confusion in conveying the intended meaning. In such cases, totally a new term has been coined to avoid conceptual overlapping (e.g., unit - gha¶aka); (v) Some of the concepts which are in phrasal forms are found to be tagged with proper nouns like F Max Test, Fisher's ix

Transformation, Guttman Scaling, Kuder-Richardson Reliability, Spearman Brown Formula, etc. In such cases, the proper nouns are retained as they are, and the Indian language equivalents have been provided only for the adjoining forms (e.g., F max pariiksha¸a, Fisher¿na parivartane, etc.); A similar approach was adopted for the terms like Accordion Key, ITED Score, R-Technique, etc (e.g., accordion kunji, ITED gaßikaanka, R-tantra, etc.); (vi) Some of the terms like Credit, Q, etc., have been adopted without any change and no parallels have been suggested. Though all such complexities have made this task very tough, we have succeeded in giving final shape to this glossary by accommodating the suggestions of every user group to the possible extent. There is no doubt that those in the field of education, especially, the teacher-learners who are studying in the Indian language medium will derive maximum benefit of this work. It would also be useful to all those who want to undertake any study in the multidisciplinary area like Testing and Evaluation in which little amount of work is available in Indian language.
