I. BIBLIOGRAPHIES AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL STUDIES Alston, R. C. A Bibliography of the English Ixmgvage from the Invention of Printing to the Year 1800. Vol. I: English Gram mars Written in English and English Grammars Written in Latin by Native Speakers. Leeds: E. J. Arnold, 1965. Pp. xxvii + 119. In a General Preface at the beginning of this first of a projected twenty volumes, Professor Alston states as "inviolable principles" for the whole work "attention to bibliographical detail, and a personal scrutiny of every item" (p. vii). Further principles and practices include listing locations of copies, summarizing the principal contents of each book, limiting entries to items of which a copy has been found or for which "there is fairly reliable evidence to substantiate their having been printed," and entering each item once only (pp. vii-viii). In all of these principles the present work differs from that which it is designed to replace in its area, Arthur G. Kennedy's great Bibliography of Writings on the English Language from the Begvnnmg of Printing to the End of 1928 (1927), and all of the differences represent at least theoretical improvements upon Kennedy. But as Professor Alston notes, in a work of this sort, "accuracy is obviously of cardinal importance" (p. ix); and given a workable system of classification and set of bibliographical principles, suc cess depends on performance in details. It can be said at the outset, though with a few minor caveats, that this opening volume argues well for the eventual usefulness of the whole work. Even this first volume alone naturally invites comparison with Kennedy's performance in the same area, and in such a comparison it comes out ahead on every count. Professor Alston is naturally proud of the fact that "there are listed here nearly four times the number of items reported in the relevant sec tion in Kennedy's bibliography" (p. xiv) and that he has found and listed over 1200 items. But numbers give no true idea of the superiority in use fulness of this work to Kennedy's. Part of this practical superiority resides in the ordering of the materials. The items are entered in an overall chronolog ical order as in Kennedy; but it is certainly better to enter later editions of the same work in a separate chronological order immediately after the first entry, as here, than to list later editions, by date only, in the first entry and then sometimes, but only sometimes, enter them separately in the overall chro nology, as Kennedy did. But the major superiority of this work to Kennedy's lies in its provision of information on the various items that is not given in Kennedy: bibliographical identity of the item, locations of copies, contents, MS. notes and emendations found in copies, and modern editions and critical studies. Each item is identi fied by size, by number of pages, and by reference to the standard biblio graphies and catalogues (Kennedy, STC, Wing, etc.). Although Professor Alston warns that "no attempt has been made to provide a census" (p. viii) and that he had too little time in the libraries of the Unites States, still the listings of locations of copies are hearteningly full for most items. The sum mary of the contents of each item partly takes the place of multiple entries for the same item in Kennedy (but see the remarks below on indexing). The information on manuscript entries in copies of an item obviously can be very important, though since Professor Alston could not examine every copy dis covered (see p. xv), this may be incomplete. The listing of modern editions

493

and critical studies under the item to which they refer is more convenient to the user than Kennedy's system of separate entries and cross references. The principle of entering every item only once obviously makes a good, ex haustive index to the whole work crucially important. A student interested in early English phonology, for instance, will And that many of the items entered here are highly relevant to his study; and these works will not, according to principle, be entered in Volume IV of the series, which is to list works dealing primarily with phonology and spelling. But in the present volume, we find an "Index of Subjects, Editors, Revisers and Translators" (p. 119); and Vol ume XX of the series is to consist of indexes to the whole. It is to be hoped that Professor Alston will continue to provide a subject index for each volume as it comes out, for that twentieth volume, which presumably will contain an index of subjects unmixed with other matter, seems very far away. This work is obviously of basic importance to all students of early modern English. One must hope that Professor Alston can maintain the high editorial standards of this first volume and that someone will see fit to provide him with editorial and stenographic assistance to speed the completion of this extremely valuable work. —RUPERT E. In the way of background for his discussion of Hill's pirating in general and his pirating of the Tatler in particular, Professor Bond discusses three "dis parate contributions [which] must have had some measure of influence on public and private opinion during this critical season in the history of English publishing." The "critical season" was that just preceding the passing of the Act for the Encouragement of Learning in 1710 and the contributions were made by How, Defoe, and Addison.
