T he e levation o f t he t racks i s t herefore a pproximately t wo m eters b elow t he g round l evel o f t he n orthern a nd s outhern e dges o f t he r ailroad c utting. I n e xcavating t he c utting, t he n ineteenth-century r ailroad w orkers d estroyed p art o f t he s tructure a nd a rtificially d ivided t he s ite i nto t wo z ones, w hich, i n t his r eport, a re d esignated t he N orthern S ector a nd t he S outhern S ector. Much o f t he e xcavating t ook p lace w ithin t he c onfines o f i ndividual 3 .00 m eter b y 3 .00 m eter g rid s quares. H owever, w hen t he d imensions o f i ndividual r ooms b ecame k nown, e xcavation o ften p roceded i n s everal g rid s quares a t o nce. F or e xample, t he e xcavation o f t he o nly p art o f R oom 5 t hat h as b een u ncovered e mbraced p arts o f t wo g rids: t he s outheastern h alf o f S A+1 a nd a pproximately t he s outhwestern h alf o f S A+2. E xtended g rid r eferences, s uch a s " SA I -1, S A+2," o ccur t hroughout t he t ext, b ut w ithin t he c ontext o f a d iscussion o f a s pecific r oom t hey s hould c ause n o c onfusion. R ESULTS T he s ampling d esign p roduced e xcellent i ndications o f v ariability i n t he s urface i ntensity o f t he R oman m aterial a nd d efined f our a reas o f h igh a rtifact c oncentration. 6 A f ifth a rea, a t t he f ar n orthern e nd o f t he s ite, c ontained a h ighly v isible c oncentration e stimated a t 4 ,000 g rams p er s quare m eter. T est p its o f o ne m eter s quare w ere p laced a round t hree o f t hese h igh-concentration a reas ( Appendix 2 , f ig. 3 ). 7 S tructural r emains w ere f ound i n t wo o f t he h igh-density a reas i n t he n orthern e nd o f t he s ite. T he t hird t est e xcavation u nit, i n t he s outheastern p ortion o f t he s ite, f ound h igh q uantities o f m aterial b ut n o s tructural r emains. A f ourth e xcavation u nit, i n t he e ast-central a rea, where t here w ere a lmost n o s urface i ndications o f

C ONCLUSIONS T he s ite o f L a B efa h as p rovided a dequate t esting o f t he c entral s take s urface c ollection t echnique t o d emonstrate i ts v alue a s a r esearch t ool. T he m ethod e ffectively p erforms t he s ame t asks a s t he r ectangular g rid t echnique, y et i n m uch l ess t ime a nd w ith f ewer l aborers. T his r esearch h as s hown i ts a pplicability t o l arge-site s urface c ollecting w hile i mplying i ts g reater v alue i n r egional s tudies. A rchaeologists p ressed f or t ime a nd k nowing l abor c onstraints, c an r arely d o t he k ind o f s ystematic s ampling r equired f or a dequate c omparisons o f s ites i n r egional s tudies. I n t his r egard t he c entral s take t echnique m ay a llow f or m uch m ore s ystematic i ntersite c omparisons i n r egional s tudies.
