INTRODUCTION

Congratulations on purchasing Soap Making, and thank you for doing so. The earliest recipe for soap dates back to the Babylonian Empire but was only used for medicinal and cleaning purposes. The following chapters will discuss the mold and pour process, cold process, and hot process used to make homemade soap. It comes down to personal preference. The hot and cold process both start with the same process where you use a lye and water solution. The next phase will combine the concentration with oils to begin the process of saponification. The final stage is where the additives are mixed in, and the mixture is poured into a mold. The hot process used in soap making provides a soap that is ready to use immediately. However, it will last much longer if you allow it to harden for at least one week. It will take four to six weeks for cold process soap to completely saponify and become shelf-ready. You will soon discover a fantastic way to be creative for yourself and your family. Get the children involved and let them choose the additions of oils, fragrances, and other additives. It will provide them with a feeling of accomplishment that will be carried forward.

SOAP MAKING: FIRST STEPS

S OAP MAKING CAN BE fun and very useful to save you tons of money. This segment will include the necessary steps for you to get started.

Get the right equipment.

Purchase the ingredients needed. Select the desired oils. Calculate the amount of lye & water. Prepare the space. Get yourself ready to work. Prepare the ingredients. Make the lye solution. Prepare all of the ingredients & materials. Mix & melt the oils. Measure all other ingredients.

F our Methods for Making Soap

The following chapters will further explain the process of making soap.

old Process: The cold process involves mixing lye (sodium hydroxide) with water, and mixing it with fatty oils, natural colorants such as clay, and essential oils. It is the most popular method of making soap from scratch, where the fatty acids in oils are broken down by the lye.

C

and Pour: This is a ready-made soap base compound composed of M eltglycerin, fatty acids, and other natural ingredients. The process involves melting premade blocks of soap and adding your desired fragrance. The base is produced using a saponification process, mixing fats with an alkali, such as lye. This process is a variation of the cold process, whereas H otyouProcess: begin saponification and add the mixture to a double boiler or crockpot. The addition of heat will speed the process. You are essentially ‘bringing life’ to soap that has already R ebatching: been produced. You grate, melt, and add in additional fragrances, colors, or additives. You can use milk or water and re-blending/recycle them. These are a few suggestions:

Cocoa Soap: Melt a basic soap bar or one made with cocoa butter. Spoon in a portion of pure cocoa butter, not too much, or your finished product will be too oily. Add a liquid such as milk or water. Once the soap is melted, stir in cocoa powder and a chocolate-scented fragrance.

Goat’s Milk Oatmeal Soap: Mill bars that are made with a simple, lightly colored base or out of goat milk. Add goat's milk to meltdown. Once the soap is viscous enough to add ingredients, stir in oatmeal and, if desired, fragrance oil. Consider a honey-scented fragrance - not pure honey.

Green Tea Soap: Grate a bar that has no fragrance and lightly colored. Add brewed green tea as your liquid. Once the soap has melted, add a spoonful or two of matcha powder and perhaps a “green tea” fragrance oil from a soap making supplier. with additives. Unlike cold process soap, which may cause E xperiment certain ingredients to burn or turn volatile, melt and pour, and rebatched soaps allow you to add simple products safely. There are more recipes in the beginner section.

S oap Making Equipment & Safety

Before you start making your first batch of soap, it’s essential to have all of the equipment you will need. You want to be ensured you are safely mixing the required chemicals and fragrances. This segment is designed so you can acquire the basics.

E ssential Safety Equipment Rubber Gloves: It is vital to protect your skin from the raw caustic lye soap mixture. You can purchase the kitchen-type rubber gloves that cover your arm to the elbow, but they are quite bulky. Consider a glove that is without bulkiness, such as a thinner version of latex or nitrile.

Safety Goggles: Regular glasses are not sufficient protection from the raw soap mixture. The lye can create an alkali burn, which is extremely dangerous for your eyes. If you wear regular eyeglasses, you must be sure to purchase a pair of goggles that will easily fit over them from all sides.

Adequate Clothing Coverage: Please don’t prepare the soap in a pair of shorts or flip flops. At all times, it is imperative to wear protective clothing, including close-toed shoes and a long-sleeved shirt with a pair of jeans or other type of long pants.

Paper Mask: Wearing this type of mask is optional. However, it is an additional method that can help protect your face and reduce the hazard from the lye fumes. It is especially vital if you are preparing soap in large batches or if you are sensitive to lye fumes. Pick up a batch of paper masks and be on the safe side of your experience.

E ssential Equipment For Soap Making

Equipment used for soapmaking should never be reused for food prep or storage. Fragrance particles and lye can become ingrained in the cracks, even if it has been thoroughly washed. It is also recommended to hand wash the items used instead of using a dishwasher. Measuring Scale Purchase a scale that is capable of measuring in ounces, pounds, and grams. It should also extend to 1/10th place. For accuracy, most soap recipes are measured by weight -not volume. Walmart has one which fits the bill for less than $20. Many recipes will delegate the measurement in ounces, whereas others may have them in grams. The electronic scale can do the math for you! Soap Mold The options for molds are plentiful. You can choose from silicone, wood, or plastic. Each has its pros and cons.

Silicone Molds: Using this type of mold is simple to use, unmold, and clean, making them an excellent option for beginners and advanced crafters. However, some pros believe the mold takes a bit

longer to unmold, and the soap can speckle with bubbles if the soap overheats.

Wood Molds: If you have a large batch, a wooden mold is your best choice. The wood type box makes it easier to force the gel phase and is cost-effective and sturdy. However, you will need to line the container with a layer of freezer paper or use a silicone liner to avoid the soap from sticking to the mold. Wooden molds will last for years with proper care and storage.

Plastic Molds: The molds are available in a variety of designs and shapes. They are excellent for small - professional looking bars. The plastic-type molds can be difficult to unmold, requiring more time and are also prone to soda ash, which makes it more challenging to use in the production of larger batches. It’s recommended to have a recipe with sodium lactate and plenty of hard oils to ensure the bars will come out quickly and cleanly. Pot With A Lid: It is essential for melting your oils to A Stainless-Steel use a stainless-steel material for the pot. If your pot comes in contact with lye, metals including Teflon, the lye can eat away its coating. It can also become dangerous when you are preparing the soap. Thermometer. Purchase a high-quality tester such as A Quick-Reading one sold at Home Depot. Blender: This is an optional item, but it will make the process S tick quicker. It may seem a bit unnecessary, but it will prepare the soap in one to two minutes versus other methods, which could take hours.

iscellaneous Equipment:

M A Few Mixing Containers: Purchase either stainless steel or pyrex. It is recommended to use heat-safe plastic, stainless steel, or glass bowls. Never use aluminum, since it can create toxic fumes when combined with the lye.

A Mixing Spoon & Whisk: Purchase these items to use exclusively.

Silicone Spoons & Spatulas: Using this type of spoon/spatula will allow you to remove all of the soap from the preparation container and into the prepared mold. You can also use them to create a smooth texture over the top of the final soap product.

Small Measuring Cups Or Beakers: You will need unique containers to hold your colors, fragrances, or other additions.

Pitchers: Plastic or glass heat-resistant pitchers (2) with lids are a useful item for the candle making process.

Cutting Board: Cover the board with parchment paper or plastic wrap. Use a special board for soap making with the wrap of choice.

Rubbing Alcohol in Spray Bottle: It is vital to keep the surfaces used clean to prevent any cross-contamination.

C lean-Up & Protection Essentials

Dishcloths, cleaning rags, or paper towels should be kept close by the workstation for quick cleaning needs.

Protect your clothing with an apron. This is an optional item, but you will be glad if you have a mishap on the prep table. Basic Ingredients Needed As with any recipe, your soap requires the ingredients to be accurately measured. need distilled water and Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) versus Y ouusingwillother sources, including tap water. You do not want to add additional contaminants or minerals, making distilled water a vital element for soap making needs. or Fats: Decide which oil or fat mixture you want to use. Run it O ilsthrough a lye calculator before starting. Some of the most popular soaping oils are:

Apricot kernel oil is used as a facial oil, which aids in rejuvenating and healing your skin cells.

Avocado is filled with fatty acids and does not react with lye, making it a soothing oil, which also helps regenerate and heal your skin when using cosmetics.

Babassu oil increases the cleansing power of the soap

Calendula oil is a fabulous moisturizer and healer as a body oil for dry or damaged skin.

Castor oil is a bit heavier than some oils, making castor oil a superb choice as a moisturizer.

Canola oil has a long shelf life. It is also light and odorless, which is easily absorbed, making it an excellent choice for massages.

Olive oil is for those with eczema or newborns, olive oil will provide a gentle- cleansing option that can mix well with other oils for balance.

Coconut Oil: You will find excellent lathering, moisturizing, and cleansers in this inexpensive option for many soap recipes. Coconut (cold-pressed) is rich in lauric acid and is considered to be chosen as a high-quality oil for promoting healthy hair and skin.

Palm Oil: The hardness of homemade soap is increased with the properties of palm oil.

Jojoba Oil: You will be using jojoba oil, which has the qualities of reducing dry skin, fine lines, eczema, minor burns, and acne. Jojoba oil can also extend the life of the product and leaves behind minimal residue. Jojoba oil is a bit nutty and has a longer shelf-life than many of the other plant oils.

Castor oil helps provide more lather and is very useful in the

preparation of unique liquid soaps, including shampoo and body wash.

Grape-seed oil doesn’t have a bold scent and dries quickly because of its high content of linoleic acid.

Safflower oil is light to medium weight oil for softening your skin.

Sweet Almond: A rich conditioning lather can be created with this perfect addition to your soap products. It is high in vitamins, D, A, and E, including fatty acids - making it excellent for the treatment of flaky, dry, or irritated skin. It can also assist with rashes, eczema, or psoriasis.

Sunflower Oil: Load up on the Vitamin E and improve your skin. It also contains minerals, vitamins, A, B, & D.

Canola Oil: This economical option provides a vibrant white color. However, it can reduce the soap shelf life.

Mango Butter: The fatty acids will not react with lye, providing an excellent moisture barrier.

Cocoa Butter: A barrier of moisture protection is provided by cocoa butter.

Shea Butter: The butter will not add lather, but it is a super

moisturizer and will soften the bar of soap. basic oils for a beginner include castor, coconut, or olive oil. T heYoumost will produce a good lathering - mild soap using this combination, and these oils are easily found at most grocery stores. Options: Choose from either fragrance oil or essential oil. If F ragrance you use an essential oil after the trace, you will be provided with a natural option for a delightfully scented soap. Clays will add silkiness, which is an excellent option for shaving. Sea salt soap is exfoliating and detoxifying. (Don’t use dead sea salt.) the soap a nice texture by using oatmeal, G ive botanicals such as dried herbs or lavender flowers.

P igment Or Other Color Additives: This choice is optional. S afety Using Sodium Hydroxide Lye

Once again, it is vital to wear protective gear when working with lye. If inhaled, quickly go outside and seek fresh air. During the preparation of soap, oils mix with lye to start the soap making process. Always remain safety conscious, making sure the area is well-ventilated without your children or pets in the space dedicated to soap prep.

Essential Elements Needed Working With Lye Have no fear; the product is safe when handled properly, and is available in pellets, flakes, and powder. The preparation of cold process soap occurs when lye is mixed with distilled water, which dissolves the lye. This mixture will create an exothermic reaction with water temperatures reaching as high as 200° Fahrenheit; thus, toxic fumes are generated. Lye In A Safe Space: Be sure to choose a spot that has proper M ixventilation to eliminate the chances of inhaling the hazardous lye fumes. When possible, go outdoors to acquire the best working space. If you're stuck inside, use a fan or open several windows. Once again, make sure the area is kid and pet-free. Lye to Water: Be sure the measurements are accurate as you add A dding the ingredients into individual containers. Always slowly mix the lye into the water; not vice versa; (This cannot be stated enough!) If added incorrectly, it can cause an explosion of expanding lye in the container. Think of this jingle: “It’s smarter to add lye to water! Add water to lye, and you may die!” Of course, that is a bit extreme, but it is a catchy phrase! an Appropriate Mixing Container: As a general guideline, avoid U semetal containers. Choose a safe-durable container to mix the lye. The container needs to be a heat-resistant glass or plastic. It is not recommended to mix a lye solution in a metal container since some metals can produce a hazardous reaction, producing dangerous hydrogen gases. Take an extra step and prepare the lye/water solution over the sink. Store Lye: It is imperative to clearly label the container as “LYE” S afely while on the shelf/cabinet. Always store the jar of lye pellets, flakes, or powder out of reach of children and pets. Label the container as “POISON” or “DO NOT TOUCH.”

To Do If You Get Lye on Your Skin Or In Your Eyes: W hat According to the sodium hydroxide Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), if your skin comes in contact with lye, discard the contaminated clothing. Immediately flush the area using water for at least 15 minutes. It is vital to seek medical attention. After the lye solution is mixed into the oils and begins to emulsify, the saponification process begins, and the lye solution becomes less caustic. Once the molecules of lye are in the soap, the process is successful, and it will not harm your skin.

C lean-Up Steps

There are two different ways to clean up after soaping. The first involves placing all the tools into the sink and scrubbing the old-fashioned way. The other technique consists of a garbage bag and cuts down on oils going down the drain. Some soapers like to wear goggles while cleaning up as well. An apron is also a good idea.

T he Sink & Soap Method

Use a spatula to scrape as much soap batter into the mold as possible. Wipe leftover raw soap from bowls and utensils with paper towels and throw away in the garbage. Eliminating soap batter before washing in the sink cuts down on oils and lye going down your pipes. Wiping up extra soap batter before washing it in the sink is an excellent precaution if you have a septic tank or if your pipes are old. While soap batter oils accumulating on pipes is uncommon, it is possible. prevent clogging, use boiling water and grease-cutting dish soap. The T ogreat thing about homemade soap is it is gentle on the skin. In this case, the opposite is desired! A grease-cutting, surfactant dish soap helps cut through the oils and prevents greasy residue on your bowls and utensils.

any excess soap has been removed, gather all of the containers, pots, O nce and utensils, and transfer them to an empty sink. Turn the water to high heat, and fill the bowls and containers with water and dish soap. While the bowls are soaking, begin washing the utensils using grease-cutting dish soap and a sponge specifically for soaping utensils. clean the stick blender, submerge the head of the stick blender into the T obowl filled with hot soapy water, and turn the stick blender on. Doing so helps remove the soap inside the blender head. Rinse thoroughly with clean, hot water. Once the blender is clean, use a sponge specifically for washing soapy tools to scrub the bowls and containers. Rinse thoroughly to ensure all soap is removed. Once finished, scrub the sink completely using dish soap.

T he Garbage Bag Technique

Use the garbage bag method for cleanup if you do not want to wash any of the oils into your sink. Once done soaping, place all the soaping bowls and utensils into a large, heavy-duty garbage bag. garbage bag closed, and place the bag in an area where it will not T iebe thedisturbed by family or pets. The garage, laundry room, or outside may be great places to leave the garbage bag. Allow the bag to sit for 48 to 72 hours. During this time, the leftover soap will begin to saponify and harden. Once the soap has hardened, scoop the soap out of the containers using a spatula. Some soapers throw the leftover soap away or use it in another project.

THE COLD PROCESS & RECIPES

I T IS time to customize your soap of choice. You have the general ideas of the process, but this will provide the details. You will be combining the sodium hydroxide lye and chosen oils. The combination creates a chemical reaction called saponification. You will be melting and pouring soap that has already gone through this process.

C hoose the Mold:

Wood molds tend to be the fastest option because they have good airflow, and they insulate soap well, which causes it to heat up. Higher temperatures can help you unmold your batch more quickly. molds are another excellent option – they’re sturdy, flexible, and S ilicone easy to use. They don’t have as much airflow as wood, so unmolding can take longer. You can speed the process up with single cavity silicone molds. molds take the longest to unmold. You can unmold the bars P lastic cleanly, but for speedier results, it’s recommended to use wood or silicone.

F ormulating A Hard Recipe:

When it comes to unmolding, hard oils are your friend. Oils like coconut and palm are solid at room temperature and help firm the recipe. An excellent place to start is around 70% hard oils that will create a firm bar that unmolds quickly. The rest of the recipe can be moisturizing options like olive and sweet almond oil. Using A Water Discount: This technique is simple – adding less water to your recipe means it won’t take as long to evaporate. The soap will unmold and cure faster. Water discounts also help prevent soda ash and glycerin rivers. Many soapers discount around five to ten percent. Higher amounts can accelerate trace and make the soap a bit trickier to work with during the soap making process. Using Sodium Lactate: You’ve heard sodium lactate several times. It’s a liquid salt that helps harden cold process soap. Simply add one teaspoon for each pound of oils to your cooled lye water helps the soap release one to two days earlier. Sodium lactate can also be used in hot process soap to make it smooth and in lotion to draw moisture to the skin. The pros recommend having it on hand. Using Higher Temperatures & Forcing The Gel Phase The gel phase is a part of the saponification process, where the batch gets hot and viscous. It doesn’t affect the quality of the bars, but it does help the colors pop. The gel phase also helps the soap harden more quickly. To force the gel phase, it is recommended to have your lye and oils around 120-130° Fahrenheit. Then, cover the mold with a heating pad or a layer of cardboard and a blanket. How To Unmold Soap Waiting is one of the hardest parts of soapmaking. If you cut the soap too early, it can cause drag marks and lead to dents. Waiting a bit longer to enjoy the design for the first time, is such an amazing feeling. You can typically unmold soap in two to three days. Once it’s firm, gently

tug on one side of the mold or liner. If it releases without sticking, pull on the other sides of the mold to release the airlock. Flip the mold over and gently push the soap out. If you still end up with drag marks, don’t worry – it happens to the best of us. We have tools that can help. You can purchase a soap shaver that removes dents, drag marks, and soda ash. If the bars are dented on the corner, try a soap beveller. It eliminates imperfections and gives the soap a polished look. If the dents are pretty deep, you can shred or cut the soap up and use it in a variety of ways. It may not be what you originally planned, but your skin will still feel wonderful. Pros Of Using Cold Press You control each of the components added to the soap. The final result is your unique process. You can supplement the recipe into unlimited variations Cons Of Using Cold Press More ingredients and tools are needed to begin the process. You must learn how to safely handle lye. It takes more time to prepare. More cleanup time is involved. Several weeks must pass before the soap is ready to use. Simple & Gentle Cold Process Soap: Back to Basics You will find this soap perfect for a beginner.

S oap Yields: 2-3 lb.

Ingredients Needed:

Distilled Water (11.2 oz.) Oils Needed: Olive (15 oz. /44%) Coconut (8 oz. /24%) Palm (11 oz. /32%) Lye (4.8 oz.) 99% isopropyl alcohol The Mold: Use a box instead of a mold. Prepare the mold with a P rep heavy-duty freezer paper. Place the paper in the mold with the shiny side facing upward. Set Up Your Area: You will need the stick blender, prepared lye water, premixed oils, a fully-lined mold, and a spatula. Preparation Steps: 1. Slowly add the lye to the water. The liquid will be clear. Place the container aside for cooling. 2. Mix the oils (olive, coconut, and palm). Before portioning, melt and combine all of the palm oil. Cool to 130° Fahrenheit or lower (it’s ideal if both are within a ten degrees range). 3. Note: Mix in sodium lactate (about two teaspoons). The bar will release quicker from the mold, producing a harder soap product. 4. Mix it using the stick blender - tapping it on the bottom of the container a few times to “burp the blender” and dislodge any trapped bubbles. 5. Add the lye water and pulse several times - alternating with a stir or two. 6. Test for trace after about half of a minute. The soap should be slightly thinner than pudding. 7. After the soap has reached medium trace, add it to the mold. Remove existing bubbles with a firm tab of the box on the countertop. Spray the tops using alcohol to avoid soda ash from forming. Let the soap set for three to four days.

8. Dislodge the product from the mold and trim it into individual soap bars. Cure it for four to six weeks so the water can evaporate from the soap, making it longer-lasting. If you use it before it’s fully cured, it will not last as long.

P reparation Method: Step-By-Step

Step #1: Prepare Your Supplies & Workspace:

and dry the spatula, and plastic/glass containers, and molds using W ash warm soapy water and dry thoroughly. To avoid cross-contamination, it’s good practice to sanitize your work area before getting started, especially if you’re working in your kitchen. You can spray the area with a 5% bleach solution or rubbing alcohol. Wipe the area dry with a clean paper towel.

S tep #2: Prepare The Fragrance Oil: 0.5 ounces of fragrance. You want to prepare the chosen scent in W eigh advance, so the soap does not start to harden as you work. It is important only to use glass for this step. The fragrance can damage certain types of plastic and paper if it sits for long periods.

S tep #3: Prepare The Soap Base: the chosen soap base from packaging and place it on a cutting R emove board. For easy cleanup, wrap the cutting board with a sheet of parchment baking paper or a plastic wrap. Cut the soap base into small, evensized cubes (roughly 1-inch cubes). Place a large container on a scale and tare the weight. Add the soap cubes to the pitcher until you have 16 ounces in the pitcher.

S tep #4: Melt The Soap Base the container with soap base in the microwave and heat it for one P lace minute. Stir the mix gently to help break apart any clumps and help the soap melt quickly. If necessary, heat it in 20-second bursts to reach its liquid form. It is okay if a few small pieces remain—just keep stirring until they’re completely melted. Melted soap will be extremely hot, so use caution when handling. The soap should not exceed 160º Fahrenheit to avoid a rubbery-feel to the finished bars. *Note - If the soap base starts to foam while in the microwave, it is too hot. Stop the microwave and do not continue to heat. Stir gently to maintain the melting process. Step #5: Add The Chosen Dye: the soap is liquid, and all the pieces have melted, add the soap dye O nce and stir well to make sure it is thoroughly incorporated. Start with three to four drops and add more until the desired color is achieved. You may notice a thin skin form on the surface of the soap. This is normal, so just stir it back into the liquid soap. If the soap has started to thicken at this point, pop it into the microwave again using five- to ten-second intervals until it is thinner.

S tep #6: Add The Chosen Fragrance & Additives: advisable to check the temperature of your soap and make sure it is I t’sbetween 140 to 150º Fahrenheit. Mix in the premeasured fragrance to the soap base. Other additions include:

Herbs and botanicals – for their natural, healthy properties and their appearance.

Natural exfoliants include salt, oats, coffee, etc.

S tep #7: Pour The Soap Base Into The Molds: the mixture slowly to minimize bubbles. Fill to the rim of the mold. P our Quickly spritz the surface with alcohol to break up apparent bubbles that may have formed on the surface. It is okay to spray it several times to eliminate as many bubbles as possible. However, over-spraying will cause the soap to foam.

S tep #8: Let The Soap Cool: 30 minutes, a thick skin will have formed. Loosely cover it using a A fter plastic wrap. Cool it undisturbed for 24 hours. *Tip - You can place your mold on a cookie sheet so that it can easily be moved without disturbing the soap.

S tep #9: Clean Up Time: need to do with this method is to wash the utensils used with water A llandyoua scrub brush or dishcloth to loosen more substantial pieces. If you’re left with a thick layer of soap in your container, try pulling the layer of soap from the container while the soap is still warm. You can roll this into a little ball for fun and use it right away.

S tep 10: Remove The Mold: 24 hours, the soap should easily pop out of the mold. Invert the mold A fter and apply light pressure to the center of the cavity. DO NOT force the

soap. If it is not coming out easily, stick the mold in the fridge for up to 30 minutes, and try again.

S tep 11: Package & Label The Soap: want to package and label the soap appropriately. Water droplets Y ou’ll can form as the glycerin pulls the air moisture. You can help stop this process by wrapping the soap right away. tear off a piece of plastic wrap from a box. If it is too big, cut T oit package, with scissors to fit. Wrap the plastic tightly around the soap, using a heat gun to shrink it tightly around the soap for added protection. Add a label that includes ingredients, product weight, and name.

Prepare the Oils: Thoroughly melt the whole bag of quick mix in the microwave (leave the cap on) until there are no chunks or cloudiness and give the bag a good shake. Weigh out 33 ounces into a large glass bowl. Set it aside until it reaches 110-130° Fahrenheit. 4. Prep the Fragrance Oil: In a small glass cup, weigh 2 ounces of Wild Rose Fragrance Oil. 5. Prep the Colorant: Place ½ teaspoon of Rose Pearl Mica into a small glass cup. Add ½ tablespoon of the melted Lots of Lather Quick Mix oils and stir together until smooth. Dispersing the mica colorant in oil helps it mix into the soap batter more easily. 6. Slowly add the lye solution to the bowl of Lots of Lather Quick Mix. Pulse the blender on and off to mix. Continue pulsing and stirring for about one minute. The soap will become the texture of thin pudding. 7. Pour about half of the soap into another mixing bowl. In one container of soap, whisk in the dispersed Rose Pearl Mica and mix in

the color thoroughly. Whisk in the Wild Rose Fragrance Oil proportionally into each container of soap. Dump dollops of white soap into the pink soap in different areas and various heights. Use a spoon to stir the soap two to three times to create more swirls in the batter. Be careful not to overmix. Empty the batter into the mold, tapping it to release bubbles. If the soap is not staying molded, wait for two to three minutes, then try again. Sprinkle pink rose petals over the top of the soap and place the container in a warm room-temperature area where it will not be disturbed. Let the soap harden in the mold for two to three days. Pull two sides of the mold away from the soap. If it isn’t sticking, pull the other two sides away and gently press the soap out from the bottom. If the sides of the mold do not easily release, let it harden for an additional day. Carefully remove the soap and put it on a cutting board. Cut the soap into bars using a sharp, non-serrated knife. Allow the bars to cure on a well-ventilated shelf for four to six weeks to create a firm, long-lasting bar.

Re-batching Recipes These are a few ways to re-batch for fun as a beginner or a pro! You have a couple of options to fix a failed batch of soap (it happens). You will need to

decide where the batch of soap went wrong. These are a few of the common causes: Crumbly Soap: Most commonly, this is because it wasn’t mixed long enough, or it was made at a temperature that was too low or too high. Too much botanical material: This doesn’t leave enough soap between the herbs to stick together. A batch that has “seized” or become a solid chunk very quickly: This is usually because of the addition of something that soaks up the oil quickly, like an essential or fragrance oil or clay that contains either alcohol or another chemical that makes the soap harden quickly. You must break it down after the final cure has been completed. Be safe and wear gloves. If your soap is crumbly, you can just crumble it all into a bowl. If the soap is solid, you can use a box grater to make shredded soap that is easy to work with in the chosen recipe. If it’s soft, you may just need to cook it down. You can re-batch using the slow cooker or oven method. Oven Technique Ingredients & Supplies Needed: Glass baking dish & fitting lid Distilled water (.25 cup) Additional ingredients (as desired) Soap molds Preparation Steps:

1. Weigh the soap and toss it into the glass baking dish. 2. Pour in the water and cover to bake at 200° Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. Stir, then bake it for another 30 minutes. 3. Transfer the pan from the oven and add any additional ingredients you wish. 4. Spoon into molds. Cool and remove the prepared soap from mold(s). 5. Cure for three weeks if you used fresh soap. If it was already cured, you could use the soap as soon as it hardens. Note: Foil is not recommended for use in the oven method. It can have a bad reaction with the alkaline elements of the soap. Slow Cooker Technique This method is recommended for larger batches since most slow cookers heat on the sides, not the bottom.

P reparation Steps: 1. For each pound of soap, add ¼ cup of water. 2. Warm the slow cooker using the high-temperature setting. Reduce the heat to prepare the soap. Depending on your slow cooker, you may want to use a medium setting if it looks like it’s scorching on the sides. 3. Stir occasionally, but not too much since it will create a lot of foam. 4. When the soap cubes start to look translucent, cook just a bit longer and then add any extra ingredients, and mold them. Turn a Bar of Soap into Liquid Hand Soap Yields: 6 bottles Ingredients Needed: Soap flakes (1 cup)

Water (10 cups) Glycerin (1 tbsp.) Soap container with a hand pump

P rep Technique: 1. Grate the soap until it is similar to parmesan. 2. Add the ingredients and place over the med-low heat setting to dissolve the soap (1 min.) 3. Use a funnel to add it to the containers. Pour the excess into a container to use as needed. It also makes a good body wash with a drop or two of essential oils of your choice. 4. If you want the soap to lather you can add it to a foaming soap dispenser

Wait for the bars to cure for four to six weeks. Crisp Cotton Swirl Time: 1-2 hrs. Yields: 2-3 lb.

Ingredients Needed: Distilled Water (11.2 oz.) Oils Needed: Olive (10.2 oz./30%) Coconut (6.8 oz. /20%) Palm (8.5 oz./25%) Canola (8.5 oz./25%) Sodium Hydroxide Lye (4.7 oz.) Ultramarine Blue Pigment Titanium Dioxide (3 tsp.) Crisp Cotton Fragrance Oil (3 oz.) Silicone Loaf Mold (10-inch)

P reparation Steps: To ensure that the Titanium Dioxide blends smoothly into the soap N ote: batter, it is recommended micronizing it before dispersing it in oil. Add one teaspoon of the colorant into one tablespoon of sweet almond oil/sunflower/another liquid oil. In another container, disperse one teaspoon of the blue oxide in one tablespoon lightweight liquid oil. Use a mini mixer to get the clumps of color worked out smoothly. Safe: Put on a pair of gloves, goggles, and long sleeves. Make sure B echildren and pets are out of the soaping space. Use a well-ventilated area. The Tools: Bend the hanger tool to fit in the mold lengthwise. It’s P rep okay if it’s a little short, but you want it to fit comfortably within the mold.

1. Gently add the lye to the water and stir until the lye has dissolved. Let it cool. 2. Melt the oils (olive, coconut, palm, and canola). Once the lye water and the oils have cooled to 130° Fahrenheit, mix the lye water to the oils and begin pulsing with the stick blender. 3. For a harder soap, add about two teaspoons of sodium lactate. 4. Alternate using the stick blender to stirring the mixture. After about 20 to 30 seconds, test for trace. This project involves swirls; you don’t want it to become too thick, so don't over stick-blend. When a stick blender, whisk, or spatula is pulled from the mixture, the trailings should not yet suspend on the top of the soap. 5. Once you reach a thin trace, add the fragrance oil, and use a whisk to stir in. Do not use a stick blender to mix in the fragrance, or the batter may become too thick. 6. Split the soap batter into two containers. There will be about three cups in each container. 7. In one mixing bowl, add all the dispersed blue oxide and use a whisk to mix in. In the other container, mix all the dispersed titanium dioxide and use a whisk to thoroughly mix in. 8. Pour about ¼ of the white soap into the mold while tapping the mold to release any bubbles. 9. Pour about ¼ of the blue soap into the layer of white, moving the soap throughout the mold. Pour from a few inches above the mold to cause the soap to “breakthrough” into the white. Continue pouring the white and blue soap into the mold from various heights. As you continue to pour, the soap will begin to swirl itself naturally. 10. Continue to pour until you have a minimal amount of blue and white soap. This remaining soap will be used to create the swirl top. 11. Line the hanger tool up alongside the length of the mold on the side farthest from you. Insert it to the bottom of the mold. Then, move the hanger in circular motions toward yourself, starting at the bottom and spiraling towards the top. After you have completed about 2-3 circles, pull the hanger toward you and out of the mold. 12. Carefully pour two lines of white soap down the length of the mold. Then, create three lines of blue soap in between the white lines. Tap the mold on the counter to help settle and smooth the lines of white

and blue soap. Insert a dowel or chopstick into the very top of the soap. You only want to swirl the lines of white and blue soap, not the already swirled soap underneath. Drag the chopstick back and forth down the length of the mold. Continue this pattern until you reach the other side of the mold. Drag the chopstick around the outside of the entire mold. This step is optional, but it gives the swirl a beautiful finished look. Spray the top of the soap with alcohol. Cover the mold with a lid or piece of cardboard to insulate. Insulate for 24 hours. Wait for two to three days before unmolding. Prepare the soap by cutting them into bars and waiting for them to cure for four to six weeks.

STORAGE FOR HANDMADE SOAP

I T WILL DEPEND on what type of ingredients are included and their shelf life to determine how soap can best be stored. It’s suggested to provide a cool, dry space. Moisture in the air can create the atmosphere for dreaded orange spots or DOS and can cause bath bombs to fizz prematurely. is something many cold process soap makers have experienced, D OS which is most commonly caused by rancid oils, but there are several factors that can contribute to dreaded orange spots. Run a dehumidifier (if you have one) in the storage area to help reduce moisture issues. High temperatures can also cause melt and pour or cold process soap to melt.

P roper Storage for Cold Process Soap

The soap needs to cure for four to six weeks after it is removed from the mold and cut into soap bars. During this time, the water used in the recipe evaporates. If possible, use large bakers racks to cure the soap. In an ideal situation, soap should have airflow even after the four to six week cure time. If racks are not possible, just place fully cured soap into storage bins. However, this type of storage makes the soap more prone to develop DOS since there is a possibility of moisture. After it’s fully cured, it’s ready to package.

Proper Storage For Melt & Pour Soap As soon as the soap is removed from the mold, the glycerin immediately starts pulling that moisture and can form what is referred to as “glycerin dew” on the surface of the soap. Once the melt and pour is completely hard and cool, it is imperative to remove it from the mold, and wrap the soap in plastic wrap immediately.

GLOSSARY OF TERMINOLOGY

I HAVE PROVIDED you with a description of how these terms are useful for preparing your homemade soap. Abrasives: The rough-gritty substances are added to soap to help remove dead outer skin cells and dirt. If your skin is dry or delicate, abrasive soaps should be avoided. Acceleration: The acceleration is when a soap mixture starts to thicken and come to trace suddenly, sometimes so quickly that it becomes difficult to work with. Additives: The categories for soap include more expensive oils, generally added in small portions and considered medicinal tinctures, oils, clays, herbs, and other substances to enhance the soap quality. Additives include castor, jojoba, and cocoa butter. Aromatic Oils -Fragrance Oils: Oils made of synthetic aromatic chemicals and carrier oils such as mineral or olive oils. Base Oils: These oils are known as fixed oils or the main formula of the recipe, including soybean, palm, sunflower, coconut, etc. Castile Soap: Olive oil is the principal ingredient in this mild soap option. Caustic Soda: Sodium Hydroxide (lye) is its alternate name and is the alkali (base) used in bar soap making.

Curing: The cold process soap is actually safe to use after several days, but it’s recommended the soap should cure for four to six weeks in a dry and cool space with proper ventilation of air. The excess water will evaporate to form harder and milder bars that last longer in the shower. Embeds: Different shapes are created by embeds used in soap molds. They also create designs and colors, including the sun, animals, geometric shapes, and others to make the soap have more pizazz. Emollients: Your skin is soothed and softened with these, including shea and cocoa butter, to remedy the symptoms of scaling and dry skin. Emulsification/Emulsify: The term emulsify and trace is often used mutually. This process occurs at the point the oils and lye solution have blended as one, and don’t separate. Essential Oil (EO): These oils carry a distinctive scent/essence of a plant, which is extracted from aromatic plants. The grasses bark, roots, flowers, stems, and leaves are used for flavorings and fragrance for therapeutic and medicinal properties. Fats: The fats are generally insoluble in water for that creamy soap feeling. They can be in solids or liquids. Fillers: These are simple ingredients that add bulk to soap. Gel Phase: This phase results in a translucent product with brighter colors and a shinier appearance. The gel phase occurs when soap gets as hot as 180° Fahrenheit that can also be unmolded quicker. You can eliminate the gel phase by storing the soap in the freezer for 24 hours. An ungelled soap will have a matte appearance. Infusion: This occurs when you take an additive such as a herb, and allow it to steep in a liquid to extract the herb's beneficial components. Layering: Create varying colors with layers of soap. Mix and match the scents, but be sure they are compatible. Light-Trace refers to the point at which there are no streaks of oil left in the mix, and the soap is about as thick as a thin cake batter.

Lye: This is also known as caustic soda. It is dangerous and not handled in melt and pour soaps. Lye Calculator: The calculator will easily help you format the ratio of lye and liquid needed for a recipe. It also calculates the super-fat level. Materials Safety Data Sheets: MSDS are important to have on hand when working with sodium hydroxide. Melt & Pour Base: The base is also known as M&P and is handcrafting soap by melting ready-made soap bases, fragrances, and shaping it in molds. Melting Point: This occurs when the temperature at which a soaping oil will turn from a solid to a liquid. Saponification: This is the chemical reaction that occurs when oil (usually vegetable oils & animal fats) and lye molecules create new soap products. Soda Ash: This is a white ash film on the soap. It forms when unsaponified lye reacts with naturally-occurring carbon dioxide in the air. The soap is safe to use, but it can make the bars feel crumbly. Super-fat: The terms super-fat and lye discount can be used mutually. Soap is made by lye turning oil molecules into soap molecules. Any extra oil left in the soap that is not attacked by the lye is called a super-fat. Tallow: This is the hard fatty substance rendered from animals used for soap making. Tare (Zero Out): If you are adding multiple ingredients into the same mixing container, the scale function will allow you to temporarily reset the weight to zero. Trace: This is the point when the lye water and prepared oils are emulsified. For example, at a thin trace, there will be no streaks of oil, and the soap will be thin as a cake batter. As the soap sits, it will continue to thicken to medium and thick trace. Volatile: Oils that will evaporate quickly under normal temperatures.

CONCLUSION

I hope you have thoroughly enjoyed each segment of Soap Making. I hope it provided you with all of the tools you need to achieve your goals for soap preparation. The next step is to gather your shopping list. Whether you decide to use the soap making experience as a hobby or potential business, you have the facts, to get started. Make your own soaps, face wash, scrubs, and soap cleaners. As a special reminder, keep these safety tips in mind when using lye while preparing your soap: First and foremost, if you have children, wait until they are safely in bed, and your pets are in a secure space. Always be sure your workspace is free of clutter, removing that could cause a spill or could be ruined if a spill were to happen. Wear long sleeves and protective gear, including rubber gloves and safety glasses/goggles. When the lye and water are mixed, it will create fumes. Always perform this step in a well-ventilated area (outside is best). Always add lye to water. It MUST be done in this order. NEVER add water to lye. It will create a caustic eruption. These safety tips should make you more at ease while using your lye in your homemade soap projects. The first time is always the most difficult, but

follow each of the recipes, and you will be surprised at the final result. Finally, if you found this book useful in any way, a review on Amazon is always appreciated!
