The titles include: 1) Little House in the Big Woods 2) Little House on the Prairie 3) On the Banks of Plum Creek 4) By the Shores of Silver Lake 5) The Long Winter The high interest – low vocabulary format of these novels is perfect for reluctant readers and is sure to keep students motivated to read. For the teacher, flexibility is key, with students being assigned novels to read individually, in small groups, or as a class. SUGGESTED TEACHING STRATEGIES A number of possible strategies describing how these units might be used in the classroom are given. These include: 1) Whole Class Instruction 2) Individualized Approach 3) Small Group Instruction 4) Listening Skills Test A possible reward system to help motivate student reading is also given. LAURA INGALLS WILDER READING COMPREHENSION NOVEL STUDIES Suggested Teaching Strategies SUGGESTED TEACHER STRATEGIES Flexibility is what makes this multiple choice, comprehension-based approach to reading so successful. Novels can be assigned to the whole class, individually, in small groups or as a “Listening Test.” Whole Class Approach The beginning of the year is usually the best time to use the whole class approach. This makes it easier for the teacher to evaluate the reading ability of each student and to ensure that the children know how to answer “Multiple Choice” and “True or False” questions. It is best to select a novel with an easier reading level for this first novel. Of course, one major drawback to this approach is the need for a class set of novels. Individualized Approach After the first novel, students can be given (or choose) books at their reading level. This eliminates the need for complete class sets of any novel. Five is a good number for any particular novel, and even one copy will do. The advantage to this approach is that students are able to independently read books that they find interesting and are at an appropriate reading level. 1) Enrichment: In every class there are students who finish their work before the others. A novel provides them with a long-term project, and they do not need to ask what to do next. 2) Modification: Children with various reading difficulties are often very reluctant when it comes to completing long answer questions, typical of many novel studies. The multiple choice format allows these students to concentrate on reading for meaning, rather than becoming “bogged-down” answering questions. 3) Parents Who Ask For Extra Units: Sometimes parents may request extra homework for their child. If your class is working on one of the novels in the unit, giving the parents one of the other units is usually well received. Small Group Instruction At times, the teacher may wish to work with a particular group of readers who are of similar abilities. This allows the teacher to concentrate on various skills while other students are working independently. A smaller set of novels is required when utilizing this approach. Listening Test Sometimes teachers may wish to evaluate the listening skills of students in their class. This can be accomplished by simply reading the first chapter or two of a novel aloud to students and then requiring students to answer questions. The teacher reads each question aloud twice, with students writing down only the number of the question and the answer. This approach saves paper as well as ensuring a quiet listening environment while the teacher reads aloud. Having the teacher read the first part of a novel also seems to increase student interest in the book. © Rainbow Horizons Publishing Inc.

LAURA INGALLS WILDER READING COMPREHENSION NOVEL STUDIES Suggested Teaching Strategies System Of Rewards One suggestion is to implement a reward system that will help to motivate student achievement and improvement. Some possibilities include: 1) At the end of each month, each student who has successfully read at least one book with a mark of at least 50% receives a small prize. A class list can be posted on a bulletin board which is highlighted as soon as a book is completed. Periodically, letting students know who, SO FAR, can expect a prize at the end of the month also seems to increase student effort. 2) At the end of each month, the student who has successfully read the most books for that month wins a prize. 3) There is a draw at the end of each month for one larger prize. Each time that a student gets 75% or over on a novel comprehension unit, they are allowed to put their name into this draw. This draw encourages students to answer questions carefully. 4) Each student has an Achievement Notebook. In it, the title of each successfully completed book and the mark achieved (50% or over) can be written. If the student has given good answers to the Personal Response questions, a sticker can be placed beside the title. Students are also encouraged to write a brief evaluation (excellent, very good, good, boring, etc.) of the book beside the title for future reference. 5) Teachers may also post a second class list on the bulletin board which can be highlighted for each book successfully completed (50% or over). This creates a bar graph showing how many books each child has read throughout the year.

LAURA INGALLS WILDER READING COMPREHENSION Story Summaries Introduction Introduction Before introducing the Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books to a class, it is best to begin with a discussion on prejudice and racism. Throughout the books, racist views are presented through the character of Ma. (While all of Laura’s books reveal some of Ma’s prejudice, Little House on the Prairie is the most problematic.) Hopefully, the books can become a vehicle for teachers and students to examine these sensitive issues. Suggested Grade Levels All the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder are enjoyed by a wide range of people from young to old. In the school setting, this group of books is suitable for students from grades 3 to 6, with grade 4 being the most suitable.

LAURA INGALLS WILDER READING COMPREHENSION Story Summaries Little House in the Big Woods Bibliographic Information Laura Ingalls Wilder, Scholastic, ©1953 Story Synopsis Laura begins her story in the Little House in the Big Woods. There were no neighbours for miles, so Laura’s attention focused on all the details of their home and pioneer life. Wild animals, like bears, came right into the farmyard, and wolves howled outside at night. Pa made bullets, hunted, and smoked or salted meat to preserve it. Ma churned butter, cooked endlessly, and so on. Laura hated the dull Sundays because the girls were not permitted to do much at all. But there was always fun, too – Pa telling stories or singing and playing his fiddle, and Ma making paper dolls. There was Christmas-time with candy-making and visitors. There was a dance at Grandpa’s to celebrate a good maple syrup season. Going to town was a major event. Laura includes stories of emotional and personal trial as well. For example, she was so hurt and angered by the constant unfavourable comparisons people made between her brown hair and Mary’s golden hair, that she slapped Mary and was whipped for this by Pa. The chapters called “Harvest” and “The Wonderful Machine”, should be read to a class in the fall, especially if a field trip is going to be made to a Threshing Demonstration.

LAURA INGALLS WILDER READING COMPREHENSION Story Summaries Little House on the Prairie Bibliographic Information Laura Ingalls Wilder, Scholastic ©1953 Story Synopsis Pa thought that too many people had moved to the Big Woods, so he persuaded Ma to move west to Native country where he built the Little House on the Prairie. Since Ma said she didn’t like Natives, Laura asked why they had moved to Native country. Ma explained that the settlers had been told that the government in Washington would tell the Natives they had to leave and go further west. The Ingalls worked hard and built up a good farm. Pa helped cowboys drive a herd of cattle, so they gave him a cow and a calf. He trapped animals for their fur skins which he sold to buy a plow and seeds. They also had many troubles to overcome. Mr. Scott, their neighbour, nearly died when he was helping Pa dig a well. In the summer, there were a lot of mosquitoes and the whole family nearly died from fever. It rained a lot before Christmas, and the creek was so high that the girls were sure Santa Claus would not come. Mr. Edwards walked forty miles to town and back, and crossed the creek, so that the girls could have Christmas gifts. Pa and Ma fought off a huge prairie fire. Then, many Native tribes gathered to talk about attacking the white settlers. A great Osage warrior argued against attacking and saved the settlers. The crops were growing nicely when Mr. Scott told Pa that soldiers were coming to drive all the white settlers out of Native territory. So the Ingalls packed up again and left behind their plow, their crops and garden, and the Little House on the Prairie. Ma was sad, but Pa cheerfully assured her that they would have a better garden at their next home.

LAURA INGALLS WILDER READING COMPREHENSION Story Summaries On the Banks of Plum Creek Bibliographic Information Laura Ingalls Wilder, Scholastic ©1937, 1953 Story Synopsis The Ingalls’ next home was a farm On the Banks of Plum Creek in Minnesota. Laura was unhappy that Pa traded his horses for the farm, and she didn’t like the house, which was a dugout in the creek bank. The Ingalls worked hard, and Pa bought a cow and horses. He was expecting a good crop, so he built a beautiful new house which he planned to pay for later when he sold the wheat. Laura and Mary were very shy and frightened when they walked to school for the first time, but they quickly made friends and decided they liked school. Meeting and dealing with a spoiled and rude girl, Nellie Oleson, was another new experience. Going to church brought more excitement to their lives. Then, grasshoppers destroyed Pa’s wonderful crop and laid eggs, which would destroy the next year’s crop as well. Pa had to walk two hundred miles to find work, and everyone worried about him while he was gone. Then, there was a wonderful Christmas because people back East had sent clothes to the struggling community. Pa had to go east again to find work, and Ma fought off a prairie fire with a neighbour’s help. Pa got lost in a blizzard but survived. The book ends with another simple Christmas, but the Ingalls were happy because they were all safe and together.

LAURA INGALLS WILDER READING COMPREHENSION Story Summaries By the Shores of Silver Lake Bibliographic Information Laura Ingalls Wilder, Scholastic, ©1939, 1953 Story Synopsis At the beginning of the next book, By the Shores of Silver Lake, we learn that the Ingalls family now includes baby Grace, and that Mary is blind as a result of having scarlet fever. Aunt Docia asked Pa to go west and work for the railroad, and Pa agreed because he wanted to look for a new homestead. Laura, who was nearly thirteen years old, was excited and frightened when Ma and the girls took the train to join Pa at the railroad camp. Laura had an exciting time there riding ponies with Docia’s stepdaughter, Lena. Then they all packed up to go to the new railroad camp at Silver Lake. On the way there, the Ingalls were alarmed when they saw a “pistol-packing” rider following them. However, Pa was very glad to see the second rider, Big Jerry, who would protect them. Big Jerry, a Métis, helped again when Pa was about to be attacked by men who thought they were being cheated on payday. All the men left Silver Lake before winter, but the Ingalls family stayed comfortably in the surveyor’s house. Then, Mr. and Mrs. Boast arrived in time for Christmas, because they wanted to be on their homestead before all the other settlers arrived in the spring. The winter passed pleasantly, and then Pa had to hurry to file a claim for their homestead. In the end, he had to fight to get it, and Mr. Edwards helped him. During the great rush of settlers, many men paid Ma for letting them sleep and eat in the surveyor’s house. Pa decided to make extra money too. He built a store in town to sell later, and the family moved briefly into the new building. Then Pa built a shanty on their claim, and the Ingalls moved again. The book ends with the family feeling snug and settled on their new homestead.

LAURA INGALLS WILDER READING COMPREHENSION Story Summaries The Long Winter Bibliographic Information Laura Ingalls Wilder, Scholastic, ©1940, 1953 Story Synopsis At the beginning of the book, The Long Winter, Laura, who was almost fourteen years old, offered to help her father with the haying. When they saw a muskrat’s house with very thick walls, Pa said that meant there would be a very cold winter. Pa went hunting but was disturbed to find that there was no game to be found anywhere. It was only October, but the next day they awoke to a terrible three-day blizzard. When an old Native man warned the settlers that seven months of blizzards were coming, the Ingalls moved into town. Pa was afraid that the shanty would not be warm enough. At first, Carrie and Laura went to school in town, but the school closed when the town ran short of heating fuel. The town depended on having supplies of food and heating fuel being brought out by trains. When the tracks were blocked by one blizzard after another, the superintendent declared there would be no more trains to the town until the spring. Since there were no trees around Silver Lake, between blizzards, Pa had to bring hay in from the claim. He and Laura painfully twisted the hay into sticks to burn in the stove. The Ingalls ran out of flour and resorted to grinding wheat in a coffee mill in order to make bread. They managed to live on bread and potatoes. Blizzard after blizzard continued to hit the town. The endless blizzards and the lack of any comfort tired everyone out, so that they became tired and dull. Pa was not even able to play the fiddle because his fingers were too stiff and clumsy from being out in the cold so much. Then the potatoes ran out, and all the wheat for sale in town was gone. There was a rumour that a man had raised wheat on a farm south of the town. To prevent starvation in the town, Almanzo Wilder risked his life to find and buy that wheat. This wheat kept the Ingalls alive for the rest of the winter. Finally, spring came, and when the trains came through, the Ingalls celebrated Christmas in May that year.
