“GHOSTS” Reading Comprehension Novel Studies Unit Overview OVERVIEW A series of five exciting and interesting titles provide a framework for this new approach to reading. Comprehension is the main focus, with multiple choice questions designed to ensure students understand what they are reading. The titles include: 1) Alison’s Ghost 2) The Mystery at Kicking Bird Lake 3) The Barking Ghost 4) Ghost Voyages 5) Ghost Witch The high interest – low vocabulary format of these novels is perfect for reluctant readers and is sure to keep students motivated to read. For the teacher, flexibility is key with students being assigned novels to read individually, in small groups or as a class. SUGGESTED TEACHING STRATEGIES A number of possible strategies describing how these units might be used in the classroom is given. These include: 1) Whole Class Instruction 2) Individualized Approach 3) Small Group Instruction 4) Listening Skills Test A possible reward system to help motivate student reading is also given. STORY SUMMARIES A synopsis and bibliographic information for each of the novels has been included for teacher reference. ANSWER KEY Answer keys for each novel are provided.

“GHOSTS” Reading Comprehension Novel Studies Unit Overview SUGGESTED TEACHER STRATEGIES Flexibility is what makes this multiple choice, comprehension-based approach to reading so successful. Novels can be assigned to the whole class, individually, in small groups or as a “Listening Test”. Whole Class Approach The beginning of the year is usually the best time to use the whole class approach. This makes it easier for the teacher to evaluate the reading ability of each student and to ensure that the children know how to answer “Multiple Choice” and “True or False” questions. It is best to select a novel with an easier reading level for this first novel. Of course, one major drawback to this approach is the need for a class set of novels. Individualized Approach After the first novel, students can be given (or choose) books at their reading level. This eliminates the need for complete class sets of any novel. Five is a good number for any particular novel, and even one copy will do. The advantage to this approach is that students are able to independently read books that they find interesting and are at an appropriate reading level. 1) Enrichment: In every class there are students who finish their work before the others. A novel provides them with a long-term project, and they do not need to ask what to do next. 2) Modification: Children with various reading difficulties are often very reluctant when it comes to completing long answer questions, typical of many novel studies. The multiple choice format allows these students to concentrate on reading for meaning, rather than becoming “bogged-down” answering questions. 3) Parents Who Ask For Extra Units: Sometimes parents may request extra homework for their child. If your class is working on one of the novels in the unit, giving the parents one of the other units is usually well received. Small Group Instruction At times, the teacher may wish to work with a particular group of readers who are of similar abilities. This allows the teacher to concentrate on various skills while other students are working independently. A smaller set of novels is required when utilizing this approach. Listening Test Sometimes teachers may wish to evaluate the listening skills of students in their class. This can be accomplished by simply reading the first chapter or two of a novel aloud to students and then requiring students to answer questions. The teacher reads each question aloud twice, with students writing down only the number of the question and the answer. This approach saves paper as well as ensuring a quiet listening environment while the teacher reads aloud. Having the teacher read the first part of a novel also seems to increase student interest in the book.

GHOSTS READING COMPREHENSION NOVEL STUDIES Suggested Teaching Strategies System Of Rewards One suggestion is to implement a reward system that will help to motivate student achievement and improvement. Some possibilities include: 1) At the end of each month, each student who has successfully read at least one book with a mark of at least 50% receives a small prize. A class list can be posted on a bulletin board which is highlighted as soon as a book is completed. Periodically, letting students know who, SO FAR, can expect a prize at the end of the month also seems to increase student effort. 2) At the end of each month, the student who has successfully read the most books for that month wins a prize. 3) There is a draw at the end of each month for one larger prize. Each time that a student gets 75% or over on a novel comprehension unit, they are allowed to put their name into this draw. This draw encourages students to answer questions carefully. 4) Each student has an Achievement Note Book. In it, the title of each successfully completed book and the mark achieved (50% or over) can be written. If the student has given good answers to the Personal Response questions, a sticker can be placed beside the title. Students are also encouraged to write a brief evaluation (excellent, very good, good, boring, etc.) of the book beside the title for future reference. 5) Teachers may also post a second class list on the bulletin board which can be highlighted for each book successfully completed (50% or over). This creates a bar graph showing how many books each child has read throughout the year.

GHOSTS READING COMPREHENSION STORY SUMMARIES Alison’s Ghosts Bibliographic Information Mary-Alice and John Downie, Nelson Canada, ©1984 Story Synopsis When Alison picks up a hollowed-out stone, she moves backward through time to a wigwam and meets the first of Alison’s Ghosts. He is a shaman who indicates to her that the stone is the bowl of a pipe and that he wants the whole pipe. She learns that the stone came from the old Mackenzie house which is supposed to be haunted. When she goes there to look for the pipe stem, she meets another ghost, this time of a young girl. The next time Alison goes to the house, she finds that this time she is herself a ghost from the future. She sees the girl’s father holding the complete pipe that she has been looking for, and learns that the pipe has caused this family a great deal of grief. To help them, Alison takes the pipe bowl which somehow disappears. Then she hides the stem in a table made of woven branches. Alison learns that this old and powerful pipe once belonged to a shaman. Alison’s mother found the twig table so Alison finally is able to put the pipe back together again, and the shaman comes to claim it from her. Suggested Grade Levels This book is suitable for children in grades 4 to 5 and for children in grade 6 who have difficulty reading.

The ghost twins and their dog are not at all evil, but in The Mystery of Kickingbird Lake they are disturbed in 1992 when their house is turned into a vacation home, and the Shook family arrives. Beka decides to convince Kim Shook, who is about eleven years old, that the house is haunted. Then Scott, Kim’s older brother, finds something under a rock near the lake. The twins want to know what he has found, and this is the mystery in this book. The treasures turn out to be things that belonged to the twins. Kim takes the things back to the rock but falls into the lake, and Robbie saves her life. Suggested Grade Levels This book is suitable for grades three to five.

GHOSTS READING COMPREHENSION STORY SUMMARIES The Barking Ghost Bibliographic Information R.L. Stine, Goosebumps Series, Scholastic, ©1995 Story Synopsis Cooper, who is twelve years old, admits that he gets scared easily. Another problem is that he doesn’t get along with his nasty older brother, Mickey, who is always trying to scare him. In The Barking Ghost, Cooper’s family has just moved to a house in the woods. On the very first night, Cooper hears dogs howling outside his window, but he can’t see them. Then they chase him. No one in Cooper’s family ever sees or hears them. Mickey gets a girl, Margaret Ferguson (Fergie), to tell Cooper that he is living in a haunted house. But later, she becomes Cooper’s friend and tries to help him get back at Mickey. The dogs force Fergie and Cooper into “The Changing Room” and explain that they actually are people who were turned into dogs long ago. The dogs change places with the children and Cooper’s parents do not realize that anything has happened. As dogs, Fergie and Cooper drag the phony children back to “The Changing Room” but two chipmunks also have gotten in there, and a wrong change is made. They phony children return to live as Fergie and Cooper while the real Fergie and Cooper discover what it is like to be a chipmunk. If you have any concerns about the Goosebumps Series, you will find if you read this book that, while it builds tension, nobody actually gets hurt, and it actually is far less gruesome in its outcomes than many fairy tales. Even though I would have liked the children, in the end, to succeed in becoming themselves again, there is no feeling of horror or disaster because Cooper thinks he is “cute” and seems to have adjusted almost immediately to the idea of being a chipmunk. The end actually has a humorous quality. Suggested Grade Levels The scary quality of this book makes it interesting and hard to put down so it is an excellent choice for reluctant readers. I would recommend this book to children in grades three to six, and even to students with reading problems in grade 7. (Cooper, after all, is twelve years old.)

GHOSTS READING COMPREHENSION STORY SUMMARIES Ghost Voyages Bibliographic Information Cora Taylor, Richmond Hill, Ontario. Scholastic Canada, ©1992 Story Synopsis Ghost Voyages is the story of how Jeremy, a nine-year old boy from the present day, travels back in time onto two different ships. This happens when he looks through a magical magnifying glass at stamps bearing the images of the Northcote and the Nonsuch. He is the “ghost” in the book. As a result of his exciting visits to these ships, he develops an interest in history and his report card improves. On his tenth birthday the magic stops, but a letter from his grandfather helps him to accept that this is just part of growing up. The value in this book lies in the historical information it imparts and seems best suited to stronger students. GHOSTS READING COMPREHENSION STORY SUMMARIES The Ghost Witch Bibliographic Information Betty Wright, Scholastic, ©1995 Story Synopsis In The Ghost Witch, Miss Nagle has left her house to Jenny’s mother. The problem is that the house is haunted by Miss Nagle’s grandmother who was a witch. Jenny is worried that other girls will be too scared to be friends with her because of the haunted house. She solves the problem by overcoming her own fear of the ghost witch and persuading her to move to Mr. Barkin’s Halloween Haunted House where she can enjoy scaring people once a year. Despite the supernatural elements in this story, the plot is entertaining without being frightening.
