You Will Need X small and small pom pom makers Haberdashery needle Black and pink/purple felt Pink/purple and white yarn Scissors PVA glue Hole punch

How To Make

Fluffy Penguins 1.

Start with the head by creating a single colour pom pom in either pink or purple on the x small pom pom maker. Trim any longer strands to create a round shape, leaving the long tie threads in place.

2.

Using the small pom pom maker, begin the body by winding the white yarn 1/3 of the way along the pom pom maker.

3.

Continue the body by winding the pink yarn along the remainder of the pom pom maker. Add an extra 4 or 5 layers of pink yarn across the entire side, covering the white yarn completely. Repeat on the second side of the pom pom maker, ensuring that both white tips touch when you close the pom pom maker.

4.

After cutting the pom pom and removing it from the pom pom maker, trim the body for a flawless shape and cut off the tie thread.

5.

Attach the tie thread from the head to the haberdashery needle and sew the head to the body straight through the middle. Tie a small knot and cut off the remaining thread.

6.

Make the eyes using a hole punch on black felt. It may get stuck so gently tug the press outs using the haberdashery needle or a pencil. Make two then set to one side.

7.

On the pink or purple felt, cut out a small triangle for the beak, two half leaf shapes (measuring about 4.5 cm in length) and a pair of feet. If you're concerned about wonky wings or feet, fold the felt in half then draw one foot or half leaf along the edge. Cut with the felt still folded then cut the end product in two.

8.

Begin assembling the penguin by using PVA glue to attach the beak. Central, about 0.5 cm above the neck is best, or make it your own by getting creative. Add the eyes close to the beak with PVA glue.

9.

Next use the PVA glue to attach the feet. Move the feet slightly forward so the tips can be seen poking out the front of the pom pom body. Push the body down onto the glue for a moment and leave to dry as you work on the wings.

10.

Attach the wings to the body using more PVA glue, tucking them slightly into the fold of the neck on either side. Push each wing down for a moment then leave to dry for an hour or two.

You Will Need X Small pom pom makers Blue, white and green yarn Scissors PVA glue Googly eyes

How To Make

Easy Spiders 1.

Make a blue or green yarn pom pom using the x small pom pom maker. On one side of the pom pom maker, wrap around the yarn as normal until you get a thickness you're happy with.

2.

For the second half of the pom pom, wind two layers of your chosen coloured yarn across the width of the maker and then 1/4 of layer three.

3.

To start making the spider's legs, raise your forefinger on the hand which is holding the pom pom maker so your finger is elevated above the maker itself. Continue the third row by wrapping the yarn once up and over your finger. Creating a large loop. Leave your finger in place until you have completed the rest of the layer.

4.

Repeat step 3 for the next three rows. Once all loops are in place add another couple of rows and then close the maker.

5.

Before cutting the pom pom, first cut the large loops in half. Cut the pom pom as normal then tie off using a length of white yarn.

6.

Trim away any stray threads then cut the legs to your desired length. Apply a pair of googly eyes with PVA glue to finish.

You Will Need Pink and white felt Pink and white yarn X small pom pom maker PVA glue Scissors Cotton bud Purple glitter Haberdashery needle

How To Make

Sentimental Butterfly 1.

Make a pom pom using both the white and pink yarn at the same time. Hold both strands in your hand and wind round the small pom pom maker together. Repeat the process twice to create a total of three identical pom poms. Don't cut off the tie threads.

2.

Use the tie threads to sew the pom poms together with a haberdashery needle. Create a column, then tie the thread at the bottom into a discreet knot and trim the excess. Neaten up the pom poms to remove any stray threads.

3.

Fold the pink felt in half and draw one butterfly wing along the folded edge. Cut around the outline and unfold. Next take the white felt and cut out some shapes to adorn the butterfly wings.

4.

Cut the ends off the cotton bud and dip into the PVA glue. Roll the glued tips into the purple glitter then leave to dry for a moment while you decorate the butterfly wings.

5.

Decorate the butterfly wings by using PVA glue to attach the white felt shapes. Add other materials like sequins, glitter and shop bought pom poms to make the butterfly yours.

6.

After decorating, use a steady hand to dip the cut tips of your glittered cotton bud into PVA glue then place onto the top of the head.

7.

As the final step, apply a liberal amount of PVA glue to the center of the felt wings to attach the butterfly body. OR use some more yarn to sew the butterfly on for more stability.

You Will Need Black felt X small and small pom pom makers Orange, yellow, green and white yarn Scissors PVA glue

How To Make

Pom Pom Sushi Handmade Roll 1.

Cut a wide triangle of black felt. The bottom edge should measure around 15 cm.

2.

Start the pom pom on the small pom pom maker by winding the orange yarn about 1/6 of the maker. Layer up about four or five times. Continue by then adding the yellow yarn, spread out the yarn so the colours now cover 1/3 of the pom pom maker. For extra colour, add some green yarn over the top of the orange yarn.

3.

Continue the pom pom by using the white yarn to finish the side. Add an extra four layers to completely cover the colours. Finish the pom pom by making the second half of the pom pom maker completely white.

4.

Trim the side of the pom pom so they are straight. Lay the pom pom at the centre of the straight edge on the felt triangle. Use PVA glue to secure.

5.

Wrap the sides of the triangle around the pom pom and secure with PVA glue. Then fold up the bottom to form a parcel and add PVA glue.

Maki 1. 2.

Cut a 12 x 2 cm strip of black felt and set to one side. Begin a pom pom on the x small pom pom maker by using the yellow yarn. Wind the yarn around the pom pom maker so it is five threads wide. Next add the orange yarn, this time making the coloured yarn stretch out to 1/3 of the pom pom maker.

3.

Complete the side by using white yarn to cover the pom pom maker. Then add another four layers to completely cover the coloured yarn. Repeat the process on the second side of the pom pom maker BUT make sure the colours are at opposite ends of the maker.

4.

Trim the pom pom so it is flat all the way round the outside, like a cylinder. Roll the strip of black felt around the pom pom and secure with PVA glue.

5.

Trim down the edges of the pom pom to make flat edges then leave project to dry.

You Will Need Black, red and orange felt White yarn X small and small pom pom makers PVA glue Scissors

How To Make

Flurry The Snowman 1.

With the black felt, draw a circle around a £2 coin and cut out. Also create a second smaller circle, the size of a 10p, and a strip measuring 1.5 x 7cm. Roll the strip round and glue into place. Use PVA glue to attach the tube to the larger felt circle, and stick the smaller circle onto the opposite end of the tube to make the top hat. Leave to dry.

2.

Use the white yarn to make a total of three pom poms, one small and two small. Trim them but leave the tie threads attached. Use these tie threads to sew the pom poms together, one on top of the other.

3.

Using the black felt, cut out five very small circles for the eyes and the buttons. Use the PVA glue to carefully stick the eyes in the middle of the head and the buttons onto the body. Place the buttons where you wish to make it your own.

4.

Make a bow tie for Flurry by cutting out a small 4 x 0.5 cm strip of black felt. Add a second much smaller strip of red felt to the centre using PVA glue and a tiny circle of felt in the middle to finish. Add your own touch to the bow tie by cutting triangles out of either side of the red felt.

5.

Once you've let your bow tie dry for a few moments, use more PVA glue to stick into place at the join of the top and middle pom pom. Retrieve the top hat and apply a liberal amount of PVA to glue into place on top of the highest pom pom. To complete Flurry, snip off a tiny piece of orange yarn and glue into place underneath the eyes.

You Will Need White and silver yarn Scissors Medium pom pom maker Two foam circles per alien Pipe cleaner each PVA glue

How To Make

Friendly Alien 1.

Using a medium size pom pom maker, create a pom pom using the white or silver yarn. Trim the pom pom to make it neat and tidy.

2.

Take the pipe cleaner and wrap it round the pom pom in a U shape with the two ends sticking out the top. Twist in to shape for antenna or use a haberdashery needle to discreetly sew into place in the threads of the pom pom.

3.

Attach two circles of foam to the front of the pom pom for eyes using PVA glue. Job done!

You Will Need Yellow, orange and pink yarn X small and small pom pom makers Three kebab skewers PVA glue Scissors Glitter

How To Make

Floral Burst 1.

Gather the three kebab skewers and coat them in PVA glue. This is easily achieved by rolling the sticks through the glue on an even surface. Using the same technique, next coat all three sticks in glitter. Sit aside to allow them to dry thoroughly. This can take some time.

2.

Make three pom poms using the available yarns. Create your own look by using more than one yarn when making a pom pom or make a selection of single coloured pom poms for pops of colour in your floral arrangement.

3.

Once the glue has dried on the kebab skewers, very carefully pierce the pom poms one at a time with a stick. If this project is for children cut off the sharp point and push back into the pom pom to disguise the wood.

4.

Gather your selected bouquet of flowers and arrange your pom poms among them. The sticks will work best with artificial flowers or as stand alone pieces in vases without water.

You Will Need Medium and x small pom pom makers Pair of googly eyes Multiple colours of yarn Haberdashery needle Scissors PVA glue

How To Make

Ollie The Octopus 1.

Using the medium pom pom maker, create a pom pom for the head. Choose any colour yarn you like. For the demonstration we'll be using a selection of blues and white. After trimming the pom pom leave to one side.

2.

Create a selection of smaller pom poms using the x small pom pom maker. Eight pom poms are ideal but there's no harm in having a unique octopus with less legs.Trim all pom poms so they are neat.

3.

With the haberdashery needle, sew the legs/tentacles onto the body so they surround the head. Make sure the pom poms are secure before cutting excess thread.

4.

Finish off the octopus by attaching the pair of googly eyes to the head using PVA glue.

You Will Need Multiple colours of yarn Scissors X small pom pom maker Coloured paperclips Pink and white felt PVA glue

How To Make

Pom Pom Bookmarks Felt bookmark 1.

Cut out a rectangle of white felt measuring 4 by 15 cm. Then cut out a rectangle on pink felt measuring 3.5 by 14.5 cm. Use PVA glue to attach the smaller rectangle on to the larger white piece.

2.

While the PVA glue dries, create a pom pom on the x small maker using a variety of different coloured yarn. Use three colours on each side of the pom pom maker to make a rainbow pom pom.

3.

Attach the pom pom to one end of the felt using PVA glue, or for extra stability sew the pom pom onto the felt using a haberdashery needle and white yarn.

Paperclip bookmark 1.

Choose you preferred colour of yarn and create a pom pom using the x small pom pom maker. Once complete, trim so it's neat but leave the tie threads intact.

2.

Select a matching coloured paperclip, or a plain white one, and use the tie threads to attach the pom pom to the paperclip. Tie it round the top end of the clip and secure with a tight knot. Cut off the remaining tie threads to finish.

You Will Need Pink and white chunky yarn Scissors Small metal ring or keychain Large pom pom maker

How To Make

Fast Keyring 1.

Start your keyring by taking the pink yarn and wrapping it around the large pom pom maker in two strips, leaving gaps in between, to create a stripe effect. Fill in the gaps with the white yarn.

2.

Repeat on the second side of the pom pom maker, accuracy in matching up the stripes is not essential.

3.

Cut the pom pom, tie off and remove from the pom pom maker. Trim any excess strands but do not cut off the tie thread. You should now be looking at a patchy pom pom.

4.

Using a small metal ring, hoop or keychain, thread the loop on to the tie thread of the pom pom. Tie a knot as tightly as possible, embedding the loop as close as you can into the pom pom. Trim excess yarn and attach to your keys.

You Will Need White and blue felt Scissors White and blue yarn X small and small pom pom makers PVA glue Holepunch

How To Make

Fluffy Dice 1.

Begin making your fluffy dice by creating a white yarn pom pom on the x small pom pom maker and a blue yarn pom pom on the small maker. When tying them up on the makers, make your tie thread about 30cm long.

2.

Step two can be very messy. Before proceeding, make sure you have a bin or bag positioned underneath your pom pom. Leaving your tie threads intact, trim both pom poms into a cube. Make the edges as straight as you can.

3.

Move the pom poms to one side for a moment. Using the white felt, holepunch some circles from the white felt to attach to the blue pom pom. To create a traditional dice you will need 21 circles.

4.

Use PVA glue to attach the circles to your blue pom pom. It's best to attach them straight away as they can easily be lost. Copy the pattern of a traditional dice or make it your own with a unique pattern.

5.

While the blue pom pom dries, reach for the blue felt and cut out the initials of your family to attach onto the dice. Use PVA glue to attach to the pom pom. Add more personal touches by adding hearts or other logos with a sentimental meaning.

6.

Attach the two fluffy dice together by forming a knot on the tie threads. Alternatively, you can plait the threads together then knot in a loop so you can attach the dice onto your rearview mirror.

You Will Need White yarn X small pom pom maker Haberdashery needle Scissors Shop bought pom poms Star foam shape Glitter Sticky tape Cardboard

How To Make

Snowy Christmas Tree 1.

A lot of pom poms are needed for the Christmas tree so begin by making 20 pom poms using the x small pom pom maker and white yarn. Trim them as you go along and cut off the tie threads.

2.

Thread a long length of the white yarn onto the haberdashery needle and thread through the first pom pom. Pull it mostly through, tie a knot, then pull gently so the knot is hidden in the pom pom. Cut off any excess.

3.

Start creating the tree by taking some thin cardboard, like a cereal box, and rolling it into a cone. Once you have a shape you're happy with, tape together and cut off the bottom so the cone sits flat.

4.

Each layer of the Christmas tree is a ring of pom poms getting smaller as the tree gets taller. For the bottom layer of the tree, thread eight pom poms together with the haberdashery needle, wrap around the cone then sew the first and last pom pom together. Leaving the thread attached to the needle, add sticky tape between a couple of pom poms to secure to the cone.

5.

Begin the second layer by using thte same process. Thread the pom poms on the needle like the first layer and use sticky tape to secure.

6.

Repeat step four for the remaining layers. Once complete sew a pom pom on top to complete the pyramid.

7.

Time to decorate. Make the tree topper first using the star shaped foam piece. Smother in PVA glue and dip in glitter. Tap off the excess and leave to dry.

8.

Decorate the tree by using PVA glue and any crafty pieces you wish to use. Shop bought pom poms make great baubles.

9.

Finish off the tree by using PVA glue to add the star to the top of the tree.

You Will Need Multi colours of yarn Medium pom pom maker Scissors Haberdashery needle

How To Make

Multi Use Garland 1.

Make a selection of pom poms using all the colours of yarn you'd like to use. Create at least seven pom poms using the yarns to create any design you choose.

2.

With the haberdashery needle, attach the pom poms together with a matching or neutral yarn. For the first pom pom leave around 15cm of yarn behind, tie a knot to stop the pom pom escaping. Thread the remaining pom poms on at regular spaces, until you have a garland the length you want.

Additional Steps Play Toy Babies love sensory toys so add a knot on to the other of your garland and use in sensory playtime.

Wall Hanging After adding a knot on to the end of your first garland, make a few more and then tie them at intervals along an old coat hanger or bamboo pole for a unique wall decoration.

Hair Band Push the pom poms together so they are bunched up. Tie a knot on the end and cut the thread. Use the haberdashery needle to sew pieces of ribbon to either end and knot into place.

You Will Need Scissors X Small pom pom maker Yellow yarn Googly eyes Pipe cleaner PVA glue

How To Make

Easter Chick

1.

Create the main body of the Easter chick by making a pom pom with yellow yarn and the x small pom pom maker. Trim to neaten and cut off the tie thread.

2.

For the feet, cut a small piece of the pipe cleaner then fold in half to make the feet. Apply a liberal amount of PVA glue to attach.

3.

Cut off a very small piece of pipe cleaner to create a beak. Use PVA glue to attach to the the center of the pom pom. Then use PVA glue again to attach a pair of googly eyes.

How To Make Pom Poms When making pom poms there are a few options you can choose in order to make them. This book focuses solely on the use of pom pom makers, but you can also use forks or your own fingers. Over the next couple of pages I'm going to show you a standard set of four pom pom makers, so you know which size to use in your pom pom projects, and how to make a basic pom pom.

Pom Pom Makers Pom pom makers come in a couple of different designs, the ones pictured being the most popular. Readily available from most craft stores and knitting accessory stockists, the plastic tools generally come in four sizes. Pink - X small Green - Small Orange / Yellow - Medium Blue - Large Each pom pom maker splits apart into two pieces which join together with small clips. This is so there's a guided slot in which to cut the pom pom during the process. Some stockists sell their pom poms by declaring them as an eight piece set. This is a little misleading as there will only by four makers in the set. Just be wary before you make your purchase. If you're concerned about losing a half of one of your makers, use an old coathanger to store the pieces. Wrap the makers around the hanger and do up the clip to secure.

Let's Make Pom Poms Follow these easy pictured steps to make a basic one colour pom pom. For this demonstration we're using an x small pom pom maker and chunky white yarn.

1. Pinch and hold Place the pieces of the pom pom maker together so the bumps rest in the holes on the other piece. You should have a clip at either end. Take your yarn and hold the end on the open pom pom maker.

2. Wind it up Hold the yarn in place until you've wrapped round a few times. Keep winding until the side is covered. Add multiple layers of yarn to build up the pom pom then cut. The more layers the fluffier the pom pom. Repeat on the other side.

3. Close the gap Once you've wrapped yarn around both side of the pom pom maker fold it up and push the clips down till they click into place.

4. Cut through Use scissors to cut the yarn in the gap between the 2 pom pom maker pieces. Cut the whole way round, minding your fingers at all times.

5. Tie and release Cut an additional piece of yarn and wrap through the middle, tie a knot then repeat once or twice. Undo the clips and release the pom pom. Trim off any stray yarn to finish.
