PREFACE This index to Volume VI of the Iter Italicum appears much later than anticipated because the text of Volume VI posed many unexpected problems and difficulties. I also use this opportunity to do in this index what I had already done in the index to Iter V, i.e., to "smuggle in" a number of new descriptions of manuscripts. and a few references to catalogues and other bibliographical works, which previously had been listed not at ali or inadequately. More such references and descriptions will continue to turo up in the future, but I bave decided not to pursue them and to stop my work at this point, leaving the task of adding them to younger scholars. I owe special thanks to Mrs. Judith Wardman and to ber assistants for their patient and competent work.• For their generous financial support I am indebted to the National Endowment for the Humanities, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Warburg Institute, and to the publisher E. J. Brill. I am deeply grateful to my assistants, Mr. Andrew Gregory and Mr. Thomas Alwood, for their diligent and intelligent assistance on which

I depended.t I also thank many librarians who sent me information, micro films, and photocopies, especially Dr. Eva Horvath of the Staats- und Universi tatsbibliothek in Hamburg, Dr. Armin Hetzer of the Staats- und UniversiHitsbi bliothek in Bremen, the Monumenta Germaniae Historica in Munich and the librarians in Berlin, Munich, and Wolfenbiittel, as well as Professor Georg Nicolaus Knauer and many other colleagues and friends. I hope that this volume will be received as favourably as its predecessors and

will be as widely used (though not always quoted). In view of my advanced age and ill health I shall not continue my work much longer, but I hope that the tradition which I represent will be continued for a long time by competent younger scbolars. New York August 1994

Fiirstlich Fiirstenbergische Hojbibliothek See Iter I I I , pp. 520a-52 1 b; VI, p. 506a-b . I was

first informed by the Director of the Wiirttembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart, Dr. Hans-Peter Geb, that a sizable part of the Donaueschingen colIection was recently acquired by bis library, retaining its old shelf-marks. Subsequently I received from Felix Heinzer of tbe same library a complete concordance for ali former Donaueschingen mss . , giving

for each ms. its present location. Although many important mss. did go to Stuttgart, it appears that many others went to the Badische Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe and many others are scattered in other coilections in Germany and elsewhere. (Twenty-one of the mss . cannot now be located .) The mss. Iisted in tbe Iter are now ali in Stuttgart.
