PREFACE

The present Index volume to Current Trends in Linguistics completes the series as it was originally conceived: "... to assess the current state of linguistic activity in all fields and all countries . . . " (quoted from the minutes of the meeting of the Committee on Linguistic Information, March 6, 1961 [see: Current Trends in Linguistics, volume I, Editor's Introduction, p. V]). The scholar, the student, and anybody interested in linguistics, who has occasion to take advantage of the present series will no doubt be aware of the enormous labor involved in bringing it to a successful conclusion. For this reason, our special thanks are due to Professor Thomas A. Sebeok, the over-all Editor who, among many other things, collected the materials and took editorial responsibility for the series as a whole. We also wish to express our gratitude to all the associate and assistant editors, the the assistants to the editor, the contributors and indexers, and to all those people who, by their technical and material assistance, have made the completion of this project possible. Finally, grateful acknowledgement is made of the grants of the Natipnal Science Foundation, the U.S. Office of Education and the National Endowment for the Humanities, which generously contributed so much to cover the heavy costs unavoidably involved in the preparation and processing of these volumes. Since the very beginning of the series in the 1960's numerous favorable reactions have confirmed the editor's view that the huge editorial and publishing enterprise of Current Trends in Linguistics filled a great gap in the linguistic literature. We have also received many requests to continue the series. However, in addition to the constant flux of contemporary linguistic information on both general and specific topics, there are many issues in linguistics which must take into account a historical perspective. In order to include these two facets of linguistic thought, we will continue our publication of trends in linguistics, although the contemporary aspect will now be expanded to include in-depth analysis of the processess by which these "current trends" came into being.
