PREFACE The help of several friends has greatly facilitated the making of this book: A. W. Bennett for much of the preliminary indexing of words and abbreviations; John H. Collins for suggesting the method used in compiling the index of words; Joana (Mrs. Hans-Dieter) Brueckner, Mrs. Nancy Helmbold, Evelyn (Mrs. John M.) McFaul, June (Mrs. George M.) McLaughlin, Rosalind (Mrs. K. M.) Rosen, and Nancy (Mrs. Scott N.) Zumwalt for much typing and clerical work; and the Committee on Research of the Academic Senate for paying for materials used and some of the typing and indexing. But the greatest debt I owe to my wife, who, as an unpaid research-assistant, has typed or retyped nearly the whole manuscript, besides taking the responsibility for preparing the concordance of inscriptions, the index of abbreviations, and the list of words abbreviated, as well as assembling and generally organizing the whole work over a period of more than three years. My part has been to initiate the business, to edit the manuscript, and to do all the other things not credited to those mentioned above. I take this last opportunity to thank those persons at the University of California Press, additional to the ones mentioned in the preface to Part III of the Album proper, who have been of great assistance in the production of the Album or of the Indexes: Joel F. Walters, Grace Buzaljko, Jane C. Hart, and Barbara Holler. A.E.G.

INTRODUCTION About the usefulness of indexes in general, little need be said. Two or three themes recur: we miss an index when it is lacking (or criticize its inadequacy) or we note how difficult it is to prepare one. In Greek and Latin epigraphy we are perhaps better off in this respect than in some other branches of classical study, but the situation is far from perfect. T o take only Latin epigraphy: no periodical that we know, such as AE, gives complete indexes of the inscriptions it publishes, and the only publication of book size that does seems to be CIL i 2 , whose indexes for its 2,828 inscriptions comprise not only the usual indexes of names but also one of words (in which abbreviations are specially noted), a grammatical one, an epigraphical one (including features of writing, abbreviations, and numerals), and one of res memorabiles, divided into several large categories (res sacrae, etc.). By contrast, Dessau's ILS, though by far the best book of selections of Latin inscriptions from the whole ancient period (with 9,522 texts and two volumes of indexes), lacks an index of words as well as an epigraphical one, and his index of abbreviations not only is incomplete (it lacks, e.g., T R I E R and T R I E R A R , though it has T R , for trierarchus), without clarifying this lack (its title: "Compendia Scripturae, Litterae Singulares Notabiliores"), but also has no reverse index, that is, an alphabetical list of the words abbreviated. The most serious lack that we have noted in CIL and elsewhere (including Degrassi's recent Inscriptiones Latinae liberae rei publicae) is an index of words, which of course requires the longest time to prepare and the most space to present. (It seems worth noting that Professor T. B. L. Webster of London has recently informed us that the Department of Classical Studies in the University of Western Australia is considering the possibility of indexing all the inscriptions of CIL with the aid of a computer.) It was this lack that spurred us most to produce the present work. It has, however, its own gaps, chiefly epigraphical and grammatical indexes, which might have required another year or two to compile. The epigraphical one would have been particularly difficult, demanding (in our opinion) both a firsthand acquaintance with all the stones and constant consultation of squeezes, photographs, and notes made directly from the stones. (It is for this reason that we are a little dubious about the complete accuracy of the epigraphical index of CIL i 2 , for example, which we suspect was based on the printed pages of CIL i 2 rather than on personal inspection, squeezes, etc. Our own work on the Album has shown us that CIL, though remarkably trustworthy, is not thoroughly so in all details of writing, punctuation, spacing, etc. For one example, see our Contributions, p. 167, with note 1, p. 224, for the matter of D vs. © as the symbol for 500.) In compensation, our indexes have the advantage of being based on inscriptions that are dated (or, as we have tried to show, datable) and are presented in chronological order, so that developments and changes are comparatively easy to detect—for example, the clear distinction between the earlier K. and the later Kal. as the abbreviation for I

Kalendae, which has led us to change our restoration of line 20 of Album no. 58 ( = C I L 6.32340), of A.D. 20/21, from Kal. to K., our first example of Kal. not appearing in or near Rome until A.D. 181 (our no. 238 = CIL 6.213). (Cf. P- R- C. Weaver, " T h e Status Nomenclature of the Imperial Freedmen," C ^ , n.s. 13:2 [November, 1963], 272-278, for his comparison of /., lib., and libertus and similar chronological criteria.) In this connection, it may be well to add to the chronological information provided by our Concordance (first section) indications of the periods of time covered by the inscriptions of the Album, as follows: nos. 1 - 6 are pre-Augustan, nos. 7-48 are Augustan or a little later, nos. 49-160 belong to the rest of the first Christian century (A.D. 14-100), nos. 161-262 to the second century (A.D. 101-200), nos. 263-312 to the third century (A.D. 201-284/305, with half of no. 305 belonging conjecturally to A.D. 287, half probably to 317), nos. 313-345 to the fourth century (A.D. 307/312-395 or soon after), nos. 346-364 to the fifth century (A.D. 400 [or soon after]~494), and no. 365 is of A.D. 525. I t may be noted also that in our Index of Words we give special help on new words (or spellings) and unusual meanings, not listed in Lewis and Short: for example, fontanus, iustitiale, minutum or minuta (sc. pars), mitto, Odium for Odeum, praesessio, pumilus, sacerdotia, scrinium, secundae and tertiae, sigilla, Stata Mater, Tuscanica, Vediovis, vermiculum, vestifex. W e present these indexes separately, in order not to make Part I I I of the Album too large and cumbersome and also to make them available even to those lacking the Album proper. W e fear that some small errors and inconsistencies remain, but we hope that there are no gross ones.
