ACK NOW LEDGMENTS

The current archaeological investigations of ancient Aphrodisias in Caria are in the fullest sense the personal achievement of Professor Kenan T. Erim of New York University. I am honored to be entrusted with a share of Professor Erim's labors. He has made possible my participation in the excavations and encouraged my work, for which I am grateful. No mention of Aphrodisias is complete without the extension of abundant thanks to the National Geographic Society for its generous support and the constant interest and concern of its Committee for Reasearch and Exploration. I thank Professor Tom B. Jones of the University of Minnesota, whose contributions to the study of the Greek imperial issues are well-known, for his time, :nstruction, and advice. Mr. H. Bartlett Wells of Washington, D.C., has recoized a number of specimens that would have remained uniden tified otherwise, collected plaster casts for me, and generally shared his great knowledge of numis matics. I appreciate his interest greatly. Dr. Fred Lauritsen worked beside me for an entire summer at Aphrodisias. To him I owe thanks for the initial cleaning and identification of many specimens and for subsequent aid. I also thank Miss Joyce Reynolds of Cambridge University for her aid in several matters touching upon the epigraphic remains, and Dr. Martin J. Price of the British Museum, who was kind enough to reply at length to several inquiries. Finally, I thank the editors of British Archaeological Reports, for their excellent advice and 1counsel.
