Varieties of Human Value is a pioneer study in the scientific examination of man's patterned preferences for varied forms of the good life. Asking college students from six different national cultures-the United States, Canada, Norway, India, China, and Japan-to reveal their attitude toward thirteen possible "ways to live," Dr. Morris discovered that underlying men's valua tions of the good life in different cul tures are five common "value dimen sions." These dimensions are char acterized as social restraint and self control, enjoyment and progress in action, withdrawal and self-sufficiency, receptiv ity and sympathetic concern, and self indulgence or self-enjoyment. Dr. Morris finds that in terms of the relative strength of these five dimensions, indi viduals, groups, and cultures can be located and compared.

Varieties of Human Value

This study of values is a major contribu '

tion toward a unified theory of human nature. Because of its interdisciplinary nature and because of the wide range of Dr. Morris' investigations, Varieties of Human Value will be of interest to all students of philosophy, psychology, psychiatry, and the social sciences, as well as to anyone concerned with the values of contemporary young people East or West.
