THe UNDERGROUND DATABASE Updated and published by INDEX PUBLISHING GROUP San Diego, California

The Underground Database presents a collection of fascinating products, books, and companies that operate within a variety of Gray Markets. Such markets are characterized by products that are legal to produce, sell, buy, and own, but that are generally used for illegal or immoral purposes. Companies that operate in these markets usually break no laws, but their products and services allow the consumer to do so. In the development and production of this database, Index Publishing Group reports on Gray Market phenomena, without any endorsement of companies or products listed herein. Further, Index does not recommend any action on the part of the reader except the review of this information for entertainment and educational purposes.

The Underground Database is divided into three parts: suppliers of hardware or services, publishers and sellers of literature, and the books/manuals/periodicals themselves. There is some contamination of one by the other, particularly where a bookseller's advertisement lists no specific title for a book. Some topics in the introductory text that are supported only by books and manuals (rather than actual hardware) refer the reader to the Booklist. Index has made a reasonable effort to collect and validate the information shown, and makes

no warranty as to its completeness, currency, and accuracy. It is the nature of some of the listed companies to frequently change business style, name, location, or ownership, and to go into or out of business easily and casually. Readers are therefore asked to assist in maintaining this database. If you encounter an error, or discover a company/product that should be listed, please mail a note to the publisher and your correction will be verified and then included in the next update.

COMPANIES ARE LISTED HEREIN BECAUSE OF ADVERTISING OR CATALOGS THAT INDICATE SUCH A LISTING IS APPROPRIATE. NEVERTHELESS, FORMAL REQUESTS TO DELETE ANY LISTING WILL BE HONORED. COMPANIES THAT SHOULD BE LISTED BUT ARE NOT, AND THAT REQUEST INCLUSION, WILL BE ADDED TO SUBSEQUENT EDITIONS OF THE DATABASE.

Automobile

"Enhancement"

The automobile industry is governed by both state and federal air pollution laws, yet many consumers know that removal or modification of smog equipment can enhance performance or fuel economy, or both.

Many automobiles are equipped with computers that evaluate air temperature and density, load on the engine, throttle setting, etc. and use a computer program to calculate the optimum ignition and fuel conditions for a legal combination of performance and emissions. It's a simple matter to buy and install a memory chip that includes a modified program which improves performance or economy at the expense of emissions, and the users of such electronic devices restore the original "chip" when it's time for a smog check. Considerable hardware is available for the afficionado, including modified exhaust systems, fuel injectors, transmissions, camshafts, etc. that are illegal except in installations that "will only be operated as off-road vehicles, or as racing cars, but never on public highways." Many companies that sell and install such hardware watch their customer drive in and drive out. Others sell modifications by mail for cars that — with automatic transmission and air conditioning — will obviously never come closer to a track than the parking lot. Some such products are even advertised as "easy on, easy off, for smog checks."

This section of The Underground Database describes products and companies that enhance automobile performance with devices and technologies that are usually legal only in competition or other off-road use. If the consumer views the Corvette next to him at a stoplight as "competition," it's his responsibility to comply with the law.

Citizen's

Band

(CB) Radio

From an innocuous five watt dashboard installation capable of reaching around the corner to a raging (and illegal, according to the FCC) 1,000 watt monster that talks via "skip" around the world. The concept is simple: why use (legal) frequencies that are saturated by ordinary CBrer traffic, if a small modification will put your radios on frequencies that are reserved by the FCC for the Marine Corps?

Computer

"Hacking"

It isn't only kids that cruise through the databases that define our lives today. Whether based on curiosity or maliciousness, hacking is an underground artform with its own language, rules, and a unique population that has an average IQ like a bowling score. This section presents books and tools used by, or describing, this group and its activities. Booklist only.

Credit Card/ATM

Scams

Though not always intended as "how-to" books, several publishers market books and manuals that discuss this problem and how it's handled by the banking and credit industry. Some books are highly descriptive and tutorial. Booklist only.

Page

6

Crime/Deception Books on every aspect of crime, plus how to beat a lie detector, urinalysis, fingerprint ID, and other investigatory techniques. Booklist only.

Explosives/Fireworks Available as complete, functional ordnance or as recipes for the survivalist kitchen, this topic covers everything necessary to develop unconventional expedient explosives and pyrotechnic

devices.

Also, recipes for fireworks and sources for materials.

Identity/Identification In most jurisdictions one can legally assume an identity unless the purpose is to defraud. Today we receive a social security number shortly after birth, and our lifetime is measured by the accumulation of information attached to that identity. Good or bad, most of that history is available to "authorized" inquirers such as credit reporters and law enforcement agencies, and computers make searches easier and more accurate. This section of The Underground Database describes companies and products that assist the consumer in changing or enhancing his/her identity. There are at least three reasons to manufacture a new identity or modify an existing one. First, the consumer may wish to disappear, emerging in a new role at a new location, leaving behind troubling situations — personal, business, credit, etc. In novels, an agent picks a suitable name and date at a graveyard, acquires a birth certificate from the appropriate agency, and then builds documentation around that resurrected identity. It's not that easy, but it's not impossible — and The Identity Gray Market includes many firms and books to help. The second reason is fantasy. Everyone has a public life, a private life, and a secret life. To support fantasies in the last category, one can easily acquire legal-looking documents defining a position in the military, law-enforcement agencies, press, or academia. It is perfectly legal to make, sell, and buy identity cards, honorable discharge certificates, diplomas, police badges, etc. There's no law against using such materials to support a Walter Mitty fantasy if no one else is defrauded or harmed. One must nevertheless wonder about the stability of someone who purchases an authentic looking card that identifies the bearer, with a photograph and serial number, as a "REGISTERED MERCENARY."

The third reason is deliberate deception. In most jurisdictions, it is illegal to use such artificial material to defraud, to gain access to otherwise restricted data or areas, or to control the actions of others. What better way to get questions answered than to flash false police ID? Or IRS? Or CIA? On the other hand... This material might enhance a job interview, and do you wonder how it would feel to barge into a room and flash a leather case with a badge and FBI ID card? If

you like, you can join Israel's Mossad, or become a lieutenant in the police department of the City of New York.

Finally, are you certain that the diploma and honorable discharge certificate on your supervisor's wall are genuine?

Page 7

Lockpicking Tools are available for opening any lock, including very sophisticated electronic and electromechanical lockpicks. Tutorials, videotapes, everything necessary to become competent as a burglar. Slim jims for automobile entry. For sale to anyone with a credit card, and not nearly enough to train a competent locksmith.

Murder/Mayhem Explicit methodologies, strategies, etc. for the one-time killer or the professional hit man.

Includes weapons, disposing of the body, resources. Also books on techniques for inflicting grievous bodily harm, using expedient articles as deadly weapons, etc. Booklist only.

Privacy/Eavesdropping And surveillance, of course. This huge industry includes very high-tech hardware to support illegal eavesdropping, miniature TV cameras for those who want to watch, telephone "bugs" of every sort, and much more. Whether in support of industrial espionage or a divorce trial, this booming business supplies legitimate investigators, peeping toms, and stalkers. The technology is excellent, and for both kits and finished articles the prices are reasonable

because the volume is very high! Some of this hardware would have been welcome at the National Security Agency only a few years ago.

Revenge A growing field as society's frustration escalates. This market includes mostly texts, though much of the devices, explosives, eavesdropping devices, and so on, described in those

books may be purchased as hardware.

There are varieties of revenge, and subcategories.

Some experts offer ways to make someone's life miserable with charge card fraud, while

others give detailed prescriptions for computer-revenge organizations. This is scary stuff. Booklist only.

against both individuals and

Revolution/Anarchy Material that specifically supports, or instructs in techniques of, revolutionary warfare, anarchy, etc. Some read a lot like anarchist tracts distributed by expatriate Russians and their sympathizers in London early this century. Only in America! Booklist only.

Scanners/Secret

Frequencies

A "scanner" is a radio that automatically sweeps through multiple frequencies, stopping when it detects a signal. Hobbyists use scanners to listen to police and other emergency services, military activities, aircraft and air control agencies, and a variety of other transmissions from industry, education, and business.

Page

8

Laws prohibit listening to certain transmissions, such as cellular telephone conversations, so

most scanners are sold with cellular frequencies "blocked." That is, they will operate below or above cellular frequencies, but cannot — as sold — tune to those signals. Such hardware, however, is generally designed so the block can be easily removed by unskilled consumers who know how. A new law ambiguously prohibits scanners that can be easily modified, but this will be difficult to enforce. In the meantime, the industry is filled with detailed and easy instructions that allow the consumer to modify his equipment, and with services for those unwilling to try this simple technical task. How does the consumer learn where to tune his scanner? Many companies sell frequency books, and many scanners capture and record frequencies on which signals are detected. The bottom line is simple. If it's private, don't say it on a cordless or cellular phone.

There is a thriving Gray Market industry of companies and individuals that sell information and provide services and hardware to permit consumers to listen to radio communications that are supposedly prohibited. This section of The Underground Database describes such businesses, services, and products.

Smuggling Explicit books on this topic. This involves everything from avoiding duty on valuable imports to serious drug and arms running. Booklist only.

Tax

Fraud

Books that cover ways to hide taxable income, revenue-generating schemes, and various private "businesses," and the authors claim these plans are IRS-proof. Booklist only.

Telephones Have you ever heard of a "Blue Box?" When telephone systems were more primitive, such devices were used to make "free" calls, stealing toll services from the phone companies. With the advent of sophisticated computer-controlled telephone systems, Blue Boxes don't work any more (though they can be bought for historical/collector reasons).

New Gray Market technologies have evolved, however. Gray Marketeers offer many books that describe how to reprogram a cellular telephone so the bill goes to someone else. Scams abound, and security is one of the toughest problems facing the cellular telephone industry.

Television/Cable/Satellite The television section of this document includes producers of products and providers of information and services that enable the consumer to view programming whether it is paid for or not. This billion dollar Gray Market includes:

Page 9

Cable converters to translate cable frequencies to signals that can be tuned by a common

television set. Descramblers to convert distorted television programming to signals that can be viewed. Filters to restore blocked signals or to block distorting signals from the cable

line.

"Test modules" and "test chips" to be inserted intoa descrambler, supposedly to

determine its ability to programming for which devices" for satellite TV programming. Telephone

descramble television programming, but usually used to view no subscription has been purchased. Descramblers and "test (TVRO) installations, that receive and descramble subscription services that provide the latest descrambling codes.

Note: In most markets, contracts between consumers and cable companies require that consumers pay for each outlet, and use only descramblers provided by and "authorized" by the cable company. Many states have passed laws to protect their cable industry, and such laws often prohibit the sale of descramblers, etc. Gray Market vendors avoid such laws by selling only across state lines, hence the notation, "no sales within the state of

Utility Meter

:

Hacking

Yes, there are those who claim they know how to reduce an electric bill by controlling the utility meter with magnets or black magic. Booklist only.

Videotape

Copying

Videotapes contain copyrighted material (so says the FBI's warning on each of them), and recent technology makes it difficult to copy such tapes from one VCR to another without distortion. That attempt by the entertainment industry to protect their copyrighted material created a market for copy protection removal devices — available everywhere.

Weapons/Ammunition In the United States, strong federal and local laws govern the production, sale, and use of

many categories of weapons. Such laws provide for waiting periods and background checks, and govern the concealment of weapons. They usually prohibit shotgun or rifle barrels under 18" in length, exploding and incendiary ammunition, switchblade knives, and other ordnance and ammunition that has little sporting or self-defense purpose. Federal laws also control machine guns, defined as firearms that fire more than once when the trigger is depressed and held. To legally make, sell, buy, own, or use such weapons requires specialized licensing by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

One objective of the Gray Market is the development of weapons and ammunition that avoid existing laws. Between the time such products are introduced and their recognition by new legislation, sales boom. The companies and products listed in this section skirt the edges of these laws, and stress the fabric of the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. This section includes switchblade knives made from "kits," stunguns, unconventional projectile-based weapons, Mace™-like products, and unusual ammunition ranging from multiple-dart loads for shotguns to exploding bullets. Many of these products are sold only oe State lines, and the vendor makes it the buyer's responsibility to comply with state and

ocal

laws.

The database includes both devices/products and instructions (the latter in the Booklist). Page

SUMMARY The United States Constitution and its amendments guarantee certain freedoms, and no one seeks to change that protection. It must be recognized, however, that such rights are often stretched far beyond the intentions of our nation's founders, who had no way to foresee the

technological future of our society. With enough money and effort, any law can be distorted or paths around it can be found, so the quality of our lives depends upon our individual and collective willingness to abide by the spirit as well as the letter of our Constitution.

The compilers of this database believe that companies, products, services, and information described herein are all within the law, but that determination of such compliance often

demands the most liberal and cautious legal interpretations.

CONSTRAINTS

ON

ADVERTISING

Most periodicals publish specific limitations on the advertising copy they deem acceptable. The limitations below are quoted verbatim or paraphrased from letters, published constraints, corporate policy documents, etc., issued by such periodicals. There is obviously much conflict between such policy and the reality of the printed advertising. This magazine will not accept advertising material that attempts to sell any of the following merchandise or services: Modifications to firearms to provide a "Selective fire” capability.

Diplomas not based upon a course of study. Nazi memorabilia. Explosives, or the ingredients thereof.

Drugs, poisons, illegal stimulants. Anything that produces a shocked reaction on the part of the reader.

Books on locksmithing, or locksmithing tools, except from a bonded locksmith. Anything that encourages illegal activities. Any training that permits the trainee to operate outside the law. The Publisher will review all submitted advertisements on a case-by-case basis, and

reserves the right to waive the above restrictions when, in the Publisher's sole opinion, it is in the interest of its readers to do so. Acceptance of advertising material from one advertiser does not automatically convey similar access to the material of others in similar businesses.

GLOSSARY Each gray market has its own vocabulary. This glossary is far from complete, as new vernacular evolves regularly. It should be sufficient, however, to assist a reader who seeks to interpret a magazine article, advertisement, or product literature. ADDRESSABLE DESCRAMBLER A converter/descrambler that contains its own electronic identity and can therefore receive messages from the cable company, including those which turn ON and OFF the descrambling circuit. ATF (ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND FIREARMS) The federal bureau responsible for control over trade in these markets.

AUDIO CODE The special code that the authorization process sends to a Videocipher to permit descrambling of the audio. Available, for instance, by dialing 1-900-SUMMONS, where for $3.50 a tape recorded message will relate the numbers required to authorize a descrambler for a month of premium channel audio (descrambling satellite video is a trivial task). BACK DOOR Entry to a software program provided by the engineer/programmer to permit patches and later changes without having to cross password barriers. Sought by computer hackers.

BALLISTIC KNIFE A knife with a blade retracted into the handle, compressing a spring with considerable force. When held against the objective and triggered, the blade springs out with sufficient velocity to penetrate clothing and flesh. BLAMMO An obvious prostitution of the word AMMO, to describe ammunition that explodes on contact, is of pyrotechnic nature, or is otherwise unusual and/or illegal. BLUE BOX A box with a built-in sound generator that can fool a pay phone into believing a coin has been dropped. More sophisticated versions can trigger switching networks and routing changes. BRAIN-DEAD The result of a Videocipher losing its internal battery, or receiving a "die" command from the satellite. Once brain dead, the descrambler (applies to cable, also) is useless unless/until it is illegally programmed to a new identity by a cloning process.

ro BUCKLE-KNIFE, BUCKLE HOLSTER A weapon hidden or hideable within a large belt buckle. The knife is useful solely for thrusting in close combat, but the gun (usually a .22 or .22 magnum revolver) is deadly at five meters.

BUG Any device that converts audio/acoustic energy to an electric signal, which then travels down a wire or over the air (wirelessly) to the listening or recording position.

Page 13

' res BULLET (1) is clone a of identity the once company cable the by sent signal Usually a de-authorization discovered, thus turning off all units with that identity; method applies equally to Videocipher and cable boxes.

BULLET (3) A DC voltage imposed atop the AC signal that contains the video, etc. BULLETIN BOARD (BBS) Computer hacker and hobbyists’ meeting place, though only via modem and telephone. Put up notices, read them, download and upload software. Also referred to as "board." C-3, C-4 Plastique, malleable explosives, etc. A very fast-burning (and therefore powerful) explosive. Produces as SEMTEC in Europe; several other brands worldwide. Fairly safe to handle but when fitted with a detonator one of the most potent explosives available. CABLE (1) A wired television distribution system (colloquial). CABLE (2) The programming emanating from a cable-based system, differentiated from OFF-AIR. CAPSICUM Replacement for MACE™, which has a bad reputation for not stopping certain animals and some humans under drugs. Capsicum (usually 5-7% concentration) is based upon an extract from ordinary — but very high-power — chili peppers. CARDING The art and science, and especially the practice, of credit card fraud. CARRIER ACCESS CODE The code entered by the carrier to identify itself (like a 10XXX signal). CATV Community Antenna TeleVision. Originally, one antenna plus amplification and distribution cables. Now this term is used in apartments, etc., to denote one cable input, distributed to all subscribers or residents, often with one subscription payment.

CHANNEL In television parlance, a simple numeric designator of a frequency on which a television channel is broadcast. Across the country, all stations that transmit on Channel 7 use the same frequency band (174 to 180 MHz), which is why any U. S. TV set operates anywhere in this eee

market.

Europe and Japan use different schemes, hence television sets are made for a specific

CHIP. Gl) As a noun, an integrated circuit that either contains memory capacity with a descrambling instruction or a microprocessor (computer) that is capable of fooling other circuitry into descrambling unsubscribed programming. Also, a chip to modify the computer control system of an automobile to improve or change performance (and smog compliance).

Page

14

CHIP (2) As a verb, to install a semiconductor integrated circuit into a descrambler such as to make the unit descramble unsubscribed programming. Also, to install a chip in an automotive computer control system. CHIPPED Colloquially, a cable or TVRO descrambler that has been modified, as in "this box is chipped."

CIA KNIFE, CIA "LETTER OPENER" A knife fashioned of nylon or other plastic material so it is undetectable on X-ray. Usually with a triangular blade, designed solely for thrusting penetration, and able to penetrate at least 1/4" of plywood. Knives of similar material are also hidden in the handles of hairbrushes, etc. CLONE A descrambler, for cable or satellite, in which the identity of another (usually fully subscribed) unit has been embedded. CONVERTER An active electrical circuit that converts the cable frequencies to a new frequency that can be tuned by a television set (usually channel 3 or 4). Some "cable ready" television sets are capped with circuitry to do that conversion internally, but that does not solve the scrambling problem. CS Military tear gas, also sold legally in some jurisdictions for personal protection.

CUCKOO An audio signal impressed on a radio-frequency carrier, which is then radiated by the TV set or the descrambler at a very low level. A proper antenna and radio combination, aimed at the radiating unit, can detect a signal which, when demodulated, produces an audible "CUCKOO" sound. This identifies which homes are viewing the affected channels. This signal is usually added to popular Pay-Per-View programming, but in some markets may appear on any premium channel. DBS The Direct Broadcast Satellite will permit viewing many channels without need of a dish. A flat "phased array" antenna can be installed on a window and simply wired to a specialized receiver (with an integrated descrambler, of course). DBS transmits at a higher power level than conventional satellite TV transponders, hence the small antenna.

DES

Digital Encryption Standard, developed by the National Security Agency and adopted by the

Videocipher as an uncrackable coding method. It was the usage of DES software that generated a futile Department of Commerce edict forbidding export of the Videocipher.

DESCRAMBLER Virtually always packaged with a converter, the descrambler restores to the video signal all data removed or distorted by the scrambling process, so a conventional TV can operate properly. DISH In the context of consumer television broadcasting, a circular concave assembly from 4 to 12’, aimed at the appropriate satellite, which focuses the radio energy from the satellite onto an _ amplifier at the focal point of the dish. The dish is moved along the arc on which the satellites are located by a motor.

Page 15

DOWNCONVERTER A circuit that converts higher frequencies (such as cellular, trunked law enforcement agency transmissions, etc.) to lower ones tunable with a common and inexpensive scanner.

DOWNLINK The signal path from the transponder to the earth.

DOWNLOAD In computer hobbyist vernacular, to transfer via telephone modem a file or software from a Bulletin Board data storage system to the hobbyist's computer. The reverse: UPLOAD. vet rethiees) P EPOXY (also POTTING) A two-part coating used to restrict access to critical circuitry in some early Videocipher descramblers. Easily dissolved or ground away. ELECTRONIC SERIAL NUMBER (ESN) The identity of a cellular telephone, which the cellular service uses to correlate calls with the subscriber, thus permitting billing for service. Obviously, changing the ESN of a phone to that of another is illegal, but it is frequently done. FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION The FCC is responsible for allocation of the radio spectrum and management of its use. It assigns frequency limits and power limits to everything that broadcasts radio energy, from TV stations to walkie-talkies. It polices usage and can levy fines, confiscate goods, and file federal criminal charges. FEED (1) The device at the focal point of a dish antenna, where the energy is focused and converted into a form usable by the receiver (indoors).

FEED (2) Newscast or other program segment from a remote site to the studio, often by mobile satellite (truck-mounted antenna). Sporting events, political rallies, etc. are all passed to the studio by a FEED. Many TVRO owners enjoy scanning various transponders looking for unedited and commercial-free feeds, which operate in accordance with no published schedule. FFL Federal Firearms License, issued and monitored by the ATF (see above). Permits the licensee

to own and use automatic or selective fire weapons (machine guns).

FILTER (BAND-PASS, OR BPF) A filter that passes every frequency that is above one frequency and below a second, and blocks all others.

FILTER (HIGH-PASS, OR HPF) A filter that passes all frequencies above a specified frequency, blocking those that are lower. FILTER (LOW-PASS, OR LPF) A filter that passes all frequencies below a specified frequency, blocking those that are higher. FILTER (NOTCH) A filter that removes a portion of the signal, such as a reverse band-pass filter, and passes the rest of the signal unaltered.

Page

16

GATED PULSE One scrambling technique, by which a precise pulse is introduced to suppress a critical part of the video signal. GEOSTATIONARY Term used to describe satellites that are in an orbit that keeps them precisely over one point on the earth. That occurs at about 22,500 miles from the surface. HEAD END The cable company's focal point, from which all programming is integrated and managed, and then sent down via the distribution system to reach the market. Also refers to the transmitter site from which signals are uplinked to a satellite.

HEADERS New pipes that improve the efficiency of the exhaust system of a car (sometimes at the expense of smog compliance) by reducing the number and degree of bends, etc. between the exhaust manifold and the pipe leading to the muffler(s), if any. INFINITY TRANSMITTER A device that attaches to a telephone, and permits the knowing user to call that number, and before the first ring, send a signal that converts that telephone into a microphone which the caller can then use to listen to the room in which the phone is located. INFRA-RED VIEWER A vision instrument, configured somewhat like binoculars, that converts infra-red light (invisible to the human eye) into light that is visible. Used for night vision, stalking, peeping, hunting, etc.

INJECTOR BOOSTER An extra fuel injector added to the intake manifold or plenum chamber, to permit additional (and illegal) amounts of fuel to be injected into the intake system to meet high performance demands. IRD Integrated Receiver/Descrambler, or a satellite (TVRO) receiver with a built-in Videocipher.

KNUCKLES Brass knuckles, or a knife with augmented metal knuckles as part of the hand guard.

LINEAR An amplifier added to a CB or other transmitter to boost power (usually illegally) and therefore range. LONG-PLAY TAPE RECORDER A cassette recorder that has been modified to permit very long (but low-fidelity) recordings. The typical modification is to reduce the diameter of the spindle that drives the tape, which

produces a commensurate reduction in the rate of travel of the tape over the recording head.

A mechanism for literally catching, and preventing the escape of, a human being, often used in conjunction with "booby traps," etc. MODEM A MODulator-DEModulator, which interfaces the computer to the telephone system, converting computer data to a modulated signal that can be transmitted, and reversing the conversion on received information. A requirement for hobbyists/hackers who use computer bulletin boards. Also, a portion of the circuitry of a TVRO receiver. MODULE : A Videocipher module contains all descrambling circuitry required for satellite (T'V RO) reception. Various IRD manufacturers all use the same Videocipher module. MRE Meal, Ready to Eat. Survivalist vernacular, applies to military or paramilitary rations that can be eaten without much preparation. MTSO Mobile Telephone Switching Office, where cellular communications are interfaced with the ordinary telephone system. The link between the cell and the MTSO is usually easy to monitor with a scanner and contains both sides of the telephone conversation.

NIGHTSCOPE (IR) Night vision accomplished by focusing available or generated infra red energy upon a reticle made of material sensitive to light in the infra red portion of the spectrum, and then electrically converting the result to visible light. The device "sees" in infra red, and then produces a visible image.

NUMERIC ASSIGNMENT MODULE (NAM) The target of every cellular phone hacker. This is a programmable memory used to store the subscriber number and the home System Identification Number, and other system data.

OFF-AIR Programming radiated by a conventional non-cable transmitter and detected with an antenna. PAPER Documentation of a new identity.

PAY-PER-VIEW A means by which the subscriber can agree to pay for the privilege of watching specific films or events, and the cable company can then authorize descrambling of that specific program by sending a signal down the cable to all identity codes that correspond to paying viewers. An alternative method uses self-destroying (timed) filters. PHREAK A computer or phone hacker/hobbyist. PICK A probe by which the pins of a lock are "raked," or vibrated and shifted, till they reach an alignment that permits the cylinder to turn. Also lockpick. An electronic pick simply rakes or shifts the pins by an electric motor rather than by hand. See torsion lever.

but stiff Piece of tough steel, dimensioned to enter typical pin tumbler locks. When moved in and out of the lock, it "rakes" the pins to multiple positions. A torsion level to keep slight rotational pressure on the assembly, and when each pin is raked to the position, that pressure holds it in place. When all are correct, the assembly rotates.

REVERSE TRAP A notch filter that removes deliberate interference that has been added to the signal. ROCK & ROLL Referring to the firing of an automatic weapon, such as a machine gun.

ROOM TRANSMITTER A bug and a transmitter, with a source of power (the entire unit can be contained within — and powered by — a wall outlet). SELECTIVE FIRE A switch, or lever, on a weapon that permits the operator to select between semi-automatic (one bullet fired when the trigger is pulled) to automatic (continuous fire when the trigger is held back, until the weapon runs out of ammunition). SILENCER A device that attaches to the muzzle of a firearm and absorbs/deadens the rapidly expanding gas that otherwise would produce the distinctive "crack" of a weapon being fired. SLIM JIM A long, flattened, specially shaped metal tool used to open locked cars by lifting or depressing the rod that connects the interior lock button with the lock assembly. Illegal to possess in most jurisdictions, where possession is considered evidence of intent to steal cars.

SPRING BATON A pocket-size wand, something like a thick and short antenna for a car radio, which extends to become a serious weapon in close combat.

SQUIB Dynamite burns safely in a campfire, and won't explode without a detonator, or squib.

STABILIZER (also ENHANCER) Electrical instrument that removes Copyguard™ or Macrovision™ from pre-recorded videotapes, or otherwise improves quality from a videotape when it is being viewed or copied.

a | STARLIGHT SCOPE As opposed conditions. light low very under vision permits A device (usually expensive) that

to an infra-red system, the Starlight scope actually amplifies light and generates a brighter image upon an internal screen. Once exclusively military, now sometimes used by stalkers and peeping toms who greatly prefer their bright image to that of infra red systems.

STUN GUN A hand-held plastic housing with a battery-powered oscillator and voltage booster that generates a very high (20-200,000) voltage potential across two metal probes at the "business

end." When those probes come close to or touch conductive material, such as flesh, the energy passes through that material. If human flesh, the local shock can render a man senseless for some time. Obviously, however, one must be close enough to one's assailant to touch.

Page 19

. SUBCARRIER In satellite (TVRO), a new signal impressed on the carrier in addition to video, and usually containing either data or audio information. Undetectable by conventional video tuning means. SUPPRESSOR Silencer, or noise attenuator.

; SURVIVALIST and equipment, attitude, the developed and in Two definitions. (1) One who has invested wears who wannabe A (2) situations. contingency skills required to survive under stressful surplus military equipment and uses expected future anarchy as an excuse for avoiding today's law.

SWITCHBLADE KNIFE i force to open from the handle but sufficient with blade its swings, or extends, The switchblade not, as opposed to a ballistic knife, enough to significantly penetrate an obstacle. SWORD-CANE 5 As the name implies, a cane or walking stick with a concealed removable sword. This term also applies to other hidden blades.

TACTICAL AMMO re mn Umbrella term for tracer, flare, armor piercing, and other specialized military and paramilitary ammunition.

TAIL TRANSMITTER A transmitter that can be attached to an automobile to permit easy tracking and location. TASER A sort of "stun gun” (see definition), but with a stand-off capability because the business end is flung at the target by a spring, and two wires deliver the high-voltage to the point of impact. TEST CHIP Vernacular for a chip that, once installed in a descrambler, either gives it the identity of a unit authorized to receive all channels (obsolete in most markets) or generates to the descrambler

circuit the instructions it would ordinarily receive from a legitimate descrambler when programming subscriptions have been paid. THREE MUSKETEERS, or MUSKETEER

A “musketeer" chip is installed in a descrambler for which one legitimate subscription has been

purchased. The chip remembers the codes sent to the descrambler circuit to authorize it, and sends the same code for all scrambled programs. The user subscribes to one, and gets all. Thus, "one for all, all for one."

TORPEDO Pyrotechnic/explosive device that, once hand thrown, explodes upon impact.

TORSION LEVER In lockpicking, a torsion lever is used to maintain some torque on the cylinder assembly while the "pick" attempts to move the pins to alignment, permitting the torsion lever to open the lock.

TRANSPONDER A combined receiver—transmitter on a satellite. It receives a signal from a transmitter on the ground on one frequency, and re-transmits it back to the ground on another frequency. Each transponder represents one video channel, and can also handle a multitude of audio channels simultaneously.

TRAP A selective filter that removes part of the signal and prevents it from continuing, but passes the rest of the signal unaltered. TRASHER A malicious/malignant computer hacker who goes beyond simply penetrating and visiting a system, but destroys information or programming while there. TVRO TeleVision Receive Only. Refers to earth stations, or dish assemblies, for reception of satellite signals only. The vernacular for a TVRO system includes "satellite system,” or "dish." UPLINK Signal from the earth to the transponder.

UPLOAD In the vernacular of computer hackers using bulletin boards,to UPLOAD is to send software or data from the home system "up" to the bulletin board storage system, via a phone link. The reverse: DOWNLOAD.

VIDEO The "picture" portion of a television signal, as opposed to AUDIO. The VIDEO portion of a scrambled satellite signal is readily descrambled, but the AUDIO is difficult. The AUDIO portion of a cable signal is left unscrambled. VIRUS A computer program that, like a biological virus, replicates itself. Some may do no more than that reproductive process, eventually filling storage media and slowing operation, but other more malignant programs may also carry destructive and/or humorous messages. There's nothing humorous, however, about a computer crashing and losing all data.

VOICE ACTUATED RECORDER A tape recorder that begins recording only when sound is detected by its microphone, or by its link to the telephone. A "death" instruction aimed at a descrambler; a cable or satellite company's counter-measure.

THe UNDERGROUND

BOOKLIST

Updated and published by INDEX PUBLISHING GROUP San Diego, California

An "underground" book/video is legal to write/produce, print, sell, buy, and read/view, but teaches a skill

or provides information that is often illegal or immoral to implement. This database represents only the tip of that fascinating iceberg, and will be frequently expanded and corrected as more information is collected — by readers as well as by Index staff. Publishers and booksellers are covered in one list, and books, manuals, and periodicals in a second.

Some particularly interesting books and publishers are mentioned in the product database as well. Many books are available from several sources, and several apparently small firms identify themselves as "publishers," but in fact sell one or two titles either self-published or bought from a major player. Some topics were omitted, including those of purely sexual content (which would fill many catalogs like this one!), tutorials by serial killers or terrorists, and a few other topics, the inclusion of which would serve no purpose but to disgust. The format of the Publisher List is straightforward, and includes data provided by publishers in their advertising or catalog. The Booklist format is:

Subtitle or remarks by publisher

Publisher, or possible bookseller(s)

The Booklist includes only the names of the publisher/bookseller; other information is in the Publisher List. Subtitles or remarks are usually extracted from the publishers’ catalogs, and should not be considered a "review" of the book, which Index has not attempted. Some listed books were read; a few were found to be well researched and written, while others were quite amateurish. Caveat emptor! Index has made a reasonable effort to report accurately, but there are certainly errors of commission and omission, which are regretted and will be corrected if brought to the attention of the editorial staff. The compilers of the list often had to make a subjective or even arbitrary decision as to whether a given title or publisher should be included, and for the next update of this list we will consider reader recommendations. Now, here's that disclaimer you've been expecting: Index Publishing Group offers this information for entertainment and education only, and does not recommend (in fact, specifically recommends against) the implementation of the instructions provided in the books/videos described in this Booklist. Inclusion in this list is not an endorsement by Index Publishing Group or any of its staff, nor is it criticism of the ethics, business practices, or editorial policy of publishers or authors identified herein.
