BV`^c\i]Z8aVn You need just three simple ingredients for this clay. Flour, salt, and water!

IddahVcY>c\gZY^Zcih measuring cup 1¼ cup (296 ml) warm water 1 cup (237 ml) salt mixing bowl large spoon 3 cups (710 ml) all-purpose flour plastic bag or container

6

Combine the water and salt in the bowl and mix well. Add the flour. Mix the clay with a spoon, and then try mixing it with your hands! Sprinkle flour on a flat surface and put the clay on the flour. Use your hands to push the clay down and away from you. Then fold it back towards you. This is called kneading. Keep kneading until the clay feels smooth.

;d^a>hNdjg;g^ZcY If you want to make something thicker than 1 inch (3 cm), use aluminum foil in the center. You will need less clay and your project will bake faster. 1. Crumple the foil into the shape you want to make.

2. Use a rolling pin to flatten some clay. Put flour on the rolling pin so the clay won’t stick to it. The clay should be about ¼ inch (1 cm) thick. 3. Cover the foil shape with the clay. Cut the extra clay off with a butter knife. Then get your fingers wet and smooth the seams. 8

Tips & Tricks

t Water makes great glue! Use it to attach sm all parts to your project. Use a little bit on your finge rtip to wet the pieces. Then attach them to your proj ect. t For easy baking , make your projects on a co okie sheet! That way you won ’t have to move them onto a cookie sheet before baki ng. t It is important that your project stays still while baking. A tall proj ect needs a wide, flat base . This will keep it from sagg ing or falling before it ha rdens.

7V`^c\i]Z8aVn Your clay projects will need to be baked in an oven. Baking hardens the clay so your projects will last forever! Have an adult preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93°C). Get out a cookie sheet, oven mitts, and wax paper. Put your clay projects on the cookie sheet. Make sure there is space around each piece. Put the cookie sheet in the oven for one to four hours. Your projects need to bake until they are completely dry and hard. Bigger projects need to bake longer than smaller ones. Ask an adult to help you tell when your projects are done. Ask an adult to remove the cookie sheet from the oven. Use an oven mitt to move your hot clay projects onto a piece of wax paper to cool.

9

;^m^c\8gVX`hVcY7gZV`h Sometimes cracks appear in the clay when it bakes. Or, part of a project may fall off in the oven. Don’t worry! Fixing it is easy! t Wait for the project to cool. t Use unbaked dough to fill in cracks or attach parts that have broken off. t Smooth the edges of the new clay with wet fingers. t Bake the project again. When the new clay is hard and dry, your project will be fixed! t Remember to make repairs before you paint your project.

10

EV^ci^c\VcYHZVa^c\ Cool paint and sealant make your project last! The final step for your clay project is to paint and seal it. Otherwise, the moisture in the air will cause the clay to crack. Acrylic Paint Painting your project is super fun! You can also brush on glitter glue to make it sparkle. Sealants Painting your project helps protect it. But to make it last even longer you should add a sealant. You can buy a sealant such as Mod Podge. Or you can make a sealant by mixing equal amounts of glue and water. Use a paintbrush to cover your project with the sealant. If you painted your project, make sure it is dry before you add the sealant.

Bend the rope into a snake shape. Try curling it up into a coil. Or, bend it into an s shape. Bake, paint, and seal your snakes. Follow the steps on pages 9–11. After the paint and sealant is dry, glue on the googly eyes.
