T he m eeting p lace h ad, o f c ourse, t o b e i n t he N etherlands. T he c onference w hich r esulted i n t his v olume t ook p lace a t S lot A ssumburgh, H eemskerk, i n t he N etherlands, f rom 2 0th 2 3rd S eptember. T he p reparation o f t his v olume t ook m ore t ime t han a t f irst e xpected, m ainly d ue t o t he l anguage p roblem f or D utch c ont ributors p reparing a rticles f or p ublication i n E nglish. P laggen s oils 1 a re w ide s pread i n t he P leistocene s andy a reas o f t he N etherlands ( fig. 2 .1), a lthough o ccurring o nly u nder s pecific c onditions. W hereas i n t he N etherlands, u nder n atural s oil c onditions t he A l h orizon a nd t he p lough l ayer ( Ap h orizon) p ractically n ever e xceed 3 0cm , t he p laggen s oils a re c haracterized b y d ark, h umic t op l ayers ( Al o r A h h orizons) o f m ore t han 5 0cm t hickness, i ndicated a s A an h orizons ( 'an ' o f a nthropogenic). T ogether w ith p laggen-like s oils w ith A l ( Aan) h orizons o f 3 0-50cm t hickness t hey c over a bout 3 0% o f t he D utch P leistocene s andy s oils ( Pape 1 970). P laggen s oils a re r arely f ound o n l oam o r c lay. I f m an-made s oils ( old a rable o r s ettlement s oils) o ccur t here, t hey a re u sually d ifferent f rom t hose o n s and. T he m ost i mportant p rocess o f t he W eichsel G laciation i n t he N etherlands w as t he d eposit ion o f c oversand, a nd, e specially i n t he s outhern p art o f t he c ountry, o f l oess. T his r esulted o ver l arge a reas i n p edogenesis i nvolving p arent m aterial w ith a h igh q uartz c ontent ( sometimes m ore t han 9 0%) a nd t hus a v ery l ow n atural s oil f ertility.
