FOREWORD Lord Provost Margaret E Smith, JP

E,·el")· city is proud of its history and none more so than Aberdeen. \X'e 10\·e to exchange talcs of the past and of the great e,·cnts at home and abroad which ha,·c been shaped by Aberdonians. Uut this splendid ,·olume is (!\idence that Aberdeen has done a lot more than just talk! Archaeology is not nece-ssarily about famous people, nor those more prominent citizens who often make their way into history books. This book tract-s the stOI")' of ordinal")· people in Aberdeen, from the early days of the burgh in the reign of King William the Lion . In its pages we disco,·er first-hand evidence of the wooden houses they built, the animals they kept. the clothes they wore, C\'en the repairs they made to their shoes and the kind of diet tl1ey enjo)·ed. It is humbling, too, in these days of comfortable tra\'Cl, tO sec the tmccs of Aberdeen's contacts in the Middle Ages: pottCI")' tablewarcs from France, Germany and Holland, fine textiles from tl1c Netl1erlands, silk from Italy and a wooden barrel from Poland : Aberdeen 's internationalism (und its economic di\'ersification) clearly go back a long way. I would like 10 record the City's gratitude to Historic Scotland for their financial support. I also warmly acknuwledgc the cfrorts and expertise of the City's Archaeological Unit in recovering such a wealth of information, studying it carefully and opening windows so that we too can dew our past. I am plcnsed that the \'Oiuntary assistance of a number oflocal people of all ages, often in testing weather conditions, ha< added a community dimension to the work. h is exciting that what has been found on our archaeological CXC3\'ations remains in the c:.1rc of the City. I wish you pleasure in reading thi> book and enjoyment in seeing the real thing in our fine displays ut Provost Skene's House and Aberdeen .\ laritime .\ luseum.

SLAGS

Small quantities of metallic slugs ( not illustrated) were present in a number of contexts from most of the sites involved. ln most cases, there was insufficient to suggest that mcwl-working wa> hcing carried out cm the site; tl1e principal exception was tl1c Phase 4h building N2 at ~ 575 Gallowgatc site. from which some 5.3kgs of hearth lining and smithing slag were recovered. T renches 5 and 7 at Castle Street produced 880g of slag indicating thm metal working was probably being carried out on or near the site.
