il PREFACE Softball has been given the distinction of being called Americans most popular recreational sport*

Any

authoritative list which includes a break down on the total number of participants of the leading sports places softball up at the top in both spectator and player interest* The need for a manual on softball is pointed out when one observes the lack of instruction prevalent on the ma«* jority of our playgrounds today*

An attempt to meet the

real needs of the young players was made by going directly to the participants themselves for the problems which are covered in this book* The fundamental skills in the make up of the game are emphasized in an attempt to start these young players on the right road to softball success*

It must be remembered,

however, that success in softball does not come from knowledge of the subject alone*

Also, one should be aware

that practice makes perfect only in so far as the practice itself is of a proper nature* All players will not find it possible to become ex perts at every position*

It is believed, however, that any

player can learn to play one position in an highly acceptable manner if he applies himself to the task*

Suggestions are

given in each chapter to aid in this process*

iii

Acknowledgment Is hereby given to Gerald L# Davison, an outstanding baseball and softball player in the San Diego area, for the action photographs used to illustrate many of the playing techniques of the game#

Use the last two fingers as a guide to steady the ball in the hand#

d* Hold the ball with the fingers eitheracross

the

seams or else with the seams* e* Find the grip that is most comfortable to you and sticlc to it* f • Palm the ball when throwing a slow ball or a change of pace pitch* g*

(See

Illustration 2*} e»

Follow through with the rest of the hody and he in a position to field the hall if it is hit hack to you*

Finish each pitch in such a manner as to allow you freedom to go for a ball in either direction*

b* Always be ready to move your hands and feet quickly because many balls are hit back through the box* c*

Try to get hold of every ball within your reach, since the pitcher is really a fifth infielder*

d*

9*

How to throw a rise ball# a#

Use the same grip as for the other pitches#

If the pitch Is outside, the hall will usually he hit to the opposite field*

How to hack up plays In the outfield* a*

Have each fielder responsible for hacking up the base nearest to him*

h*

Have the center fielder help out both the left and the right fielders whenever possible*

o*

Bo more than what Is expected of you at all times*

d*

Angle hack rather sharply when hacking up another fielder so as to he In position to field the hall If It gets through*

33 CHAPTER 5* DEFENSIVE TEAM STRATEGY HOW TO THINK ON THE DIAMOND A»

MOTIVATIONS

Rewards which may be forthcoming If your

team succeeds In playing top flight defensive ball* !•

MAKE SENSATIONAL CATCHES:

Crowd pleasing plays are

a regular thing to members of a good defensive team* 2.

SCORE A SHUT OUT:

It is easy to blank the other

club if you have sticky fingers and a bullet like arm* 3»

WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP:

Outstanding defensive teams

often reach the top even though they have some other weakness* B«

PROBLEMS:

Situations which must be met successfully In

order to keep the other team from scoring♦ 1*

How to station the infielders for a normal situation* a*

Play the first baseman approximately fifteen feet deeper than the bag and about the same distance from the first base line*

b*

Station the shortstop and the second baseman about fifteen to twenty feet away from the bag and ten or fifteen feet deeper than the base lines*

e*

Place the third baseman about eight feet from the base and only a couple of feet deeper than the base lines*

How to station tlie infield when trying to cut off a run at home* a*

Pull the entire infield in closer to the hase lines*

h*

Shift the infield in such a manner as to position them in the places to which the batter is most likely to hit*

e*

Have the pitcher keep the ball low so as to in crease the batter's chances of hitting a grounder*

How to station the infield for a defense against bunts* a*

Pull the first and third basemen in close to home plate*

b*

Instruct the second baseman to cover first base*

Have the pitcher eome in fast after making the pitch*

d*

Tell the catcher to call out where the play should be made because he is in the best position to do so*

How to make run downs between the bases* a*

Chase the base runner back towards the base he came from every time*

b*

Bluff the runner with a fake throw and attempt to run him down*

35 c*

Use only one or two throws at the most when chasing the runner down*

d.

Back up the play with the pitcher or extra in** fielders in case a bad throw is made or the runner gets past the first man*

5*

How to decide who is to cover second base* A•

Let the shortstop take it when a bunt play is expected*

b.

Play each hitter individually as to where he is most likely to hit and have the other player cover the bag*

c*

Bo not always have it so that the shortstop covers a left-handed hitter and the second base man covers a right-handed one*

d*

Get together before each play and signal who is to do the covering*

6*

How to position the outfield in a normal situation* a*

Play only as deep as the batter forees you to*

b*

Use a normal even spacing between the outfielders*

o.

Shift toward the left field line for the righthanded batters and toward the right field line for the left-handed batters*

a.

Put your best outfielder in center field, as a majority of the difficult plays occur there*

0*

Take into consideration the type of pitcher on

How to position the outfield In special situations# a#

Gome in close if the winning run is represented on third base and it is necessary to throw him out at the plate#

b#

Bunch up in the direction that the batter eon* slatently hits to if you are sure of that direction#

e*

Study all the hitters in order to know where each one is most likely to hit#

C*

PERFORMANCE:

Activities to be engaged In by a team to

improve their defensive ability# 1#

Station a complete set of infielders around the diamond during batting practice and play each ball as under game conditions*

2.

Set an outfield drill situation whereby the players are to field balls hit by the coach and then attempt to throw out base runners who are advancing around the diamond*

3*

Get up several games each week with neighborhood teams and permit the weaker teams to make four outs before the sides change*

38 D«

EVALUATION}

Rate your team1s performance on the

following items, 1*

Bid the other team succeed in scoring when your in* field pulled in close in an attempt to cut off the runner?
