PREFACE The sequel to my edition of Thucycides II was to have been written by Ian Scott-Kilvert, but unfortunately he died when he had scarcely started work on it. I have therefore produced this edition of book III, and I hope to follow it with one more volume, containing IV. 1 - V. 24. In common with other Aris & Phillips editions of classical texts, this edition supplies introduction and bibliography; Greek text and critical apparatus (now using English for the apparatus) with facing translation; and a commentary which does not neglect the Greek text but is based on the translation. The Greek text and the apparatus are my own (as they were in my edition of book II, but some users of that volume were deceived by the printers' skill in adapting the Oxford Text). In the commentary the emphasis is on the subject matter, and on the way in which Thucydides has chosen to treat the subject matter; I have been able to make only limited use of material which reached me after Easter 1993. I have tried to remember that users of this volume may not previously have read my edition of book II, or indeed any edition of any part and so where appropriate I have reof Thucydides, peated or adapted material from my edition of book II. I am grateful to Mr. Adrian Phillips for inviting me to continue editing Thucydides, and to all the staff of Aris & Phillips who have contributed to the production of this book. In Durham I L. G. Mitchell, who helped with proof reading, and thank Mrs. above all Prof. A. J. Woodman, who read a draft of the translation and commentary and made many helpful suggestions: I owe it to him to make it clear that, although I have often acted on his suggestions, I have not always done so, and in particular that in the translation I have not always adhered as closely to the structure of the Greek as he would have wished. I dedicate this book to the tutelary gremlins of page 73 and the other pages which almost proved too much for modern technology. University Michaelmas
