THE ESSENTIAL NEEDTO-KNOWS OF CHINESE METAPHYSICS QI Qi can be described as universal energy, vital life force energy or simply energy. Qi is the vital life force or energy that is in all living beings. It is the energy of life and it runs all through our bodies. But not only that: It is also the connection between every living thing the universe. It unites our body, our mind, and our spirit, and it unites us in everything. 

YIN & YANG From the Chinese Metaphysics perspective, given the importance of “taking everything as a whole,” all things are relative. A thing can be understood only in relation to something else. This is the essential idea behind the concept of Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang mutually oppose and repel one another but still cannot exist without the other. Together they create a harmonious balance. For example Man and Woman, Bright and Dark, Positive and Negative, Passive and Aggressive, Hot and Cold.

THE FIVE ELEMENTS Chinese Astrology is about studying the relationships between the Qi and the Five Elements in a chart. The interaction and positions of these elements are symbolic of different phases or primal forces within the universe, nature, and our bodies. They are divided into Earth, Water, Fire, Metal and Wood.

THE COSMIC TRINITY According to the ancient classics, there are three distinct – but interconnected – forces that influence our journey in life. Each one is equally weighted in importance without regard to hierarchy or order. This is called the Cosmic Trinity and it is made up of three types of luck: Heaven, Man and Earth.

ANIMALS, ASTROLOGY AND EVERYTHING IN-BETWEEN The Five Elements Theory is a Chinese philosophy used to describe the interactions and relationships between things. The Five elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. They are believed to be the fundamental elements of everything in the universe between which interactions occur. Everybody belongs to one of the 12 Chinese animal signs and a 12-year cycle according to the year in which they were born. One of the five elements is associated with each of the Chinese animal signs and 12-year cycle. Chinese Astrology also asserts that personality and cycle are determined by both the element and 12-year cycle element, while life force (Qi) is determined by birth date and time.

THE LEGENDARY ORIGIN STORY OF THE CHINESE ANIMALS There’s been much speculation over the years on how exactly the Chinese Animal signs came about. Some point to the existence of the Chinese Animals before the Qin Dynasty (221 – 207BC), and the complete 12 animals cycle had been set before or during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 – 220AD). Some people believe that the 12 Chinese Animals are simplified from the 28 animals which represent 28 Constellations in ancient Chinese astronomy, while some insist on the animal relationship with Jupiter’s revolution period of just about 12 years. So what’s the origin of this mysterious theory with more than 2,000 years of history? There is actually no conclusion, but the various guesses and legends make it all the more intriguing doesn’t it?

So, the Jade Emperor preferred the Ox to be the first for its honesty and diligence, but beyond anyone’s expectation, the smart Rat covertly hid on the Ox’s back and occupied the first place at the essential moment. The Tiger was crowned as the King of the Forest while the Dragon was titled the Lord of the Sea, and they ranked behind the Ox. The Rabbit won a race with the Dragon and gained 4th place. The Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, and Rooster followed closely. The Dog was punished and set to be the last one for biting the Rabbit. Well, actually, the Dog was the 11th, because there is one being that was late for the interview – the Pig and it was awarded the last place. And it is speculated that this is how these particular animals were chosen for the 12 Chinese Animal signs.

WHAT’S YOUR ANIMAL SIGN? The Chinese 12 Animal Signs are based on a 12 cycle with each represented by an animal sign. These signs are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. These signs are actually calculated based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar system and the 10,000-year calendar. Each animal sign is also paired with 1 of the 5 elements which are Earth, Fire, Water, Metal, or Wood in either the Yin or Yang polarity. For instance, 2022 is known as the Water Tiger and 2023 is known as the Water Rabbit. So, do you know your Animal Sign? If you aren’t sure, you may refer to this chart.

Interesting Fact Were you aware that during ancient times, the Chinese sages and astrologers chose to use farm animals to represent these stars so it would be easier for the peasants who were mostly farmers to identify them?

This means that it is the place where the Qi from your surrounding environment flows into the property or home. So, this allows for positive Qi to be received and negative Qi to be dispelled. Do check to see if your main door faces the right direction and is located at a good sector.

BALCONY Balconies are considered the secondary Qi Mouth in any apartment or condominium. Similar to the Main door, it helps determine if the property’s house location is facing a favourable direction which will inturn determine if you are receiving a flow of positive Qi or not. When you’re assessing a potential unit, do ensure to ascertain if the balcony is in a positive sector. To measure the facing direction of a balcony, you may stand at the balcony and face outwards.

YOUR ANNUAL FLYING STARS What are the Nine Flying Stars? In deeper studies, different types of Qi (energy) can be specified even further. Traditionally, Feng Shui divides your space into 9 sectors respectively, forming a grid. The energy that exists in each sector is known as a ‘Star’, and each one can result in different effects and outcomes depending on the right actions. Officially, there are nine of these Stars but the middle of the grid space is traditionally considered ‘empty’, causing the star that falls into that space to be void. WRITING YOUR OWN STORY, STARTING TODAY When thinking back on our childhoods, most of us can remember them as being filled with movies, folk tales as well as fascinating stories our parents used to tell us at bedtime. From the scorpion and the frog, the ant and the grasshopper, Disney fairy tales, and more.

The Rabbit loses the race, goes home to his burrow and takes a deep, long look at who he is. He feels guilty, because next year the Rabbit is the Grand Duke, and all eyes are on the Rabbit and he knows that he is being judged and found lacking.

In particular, the story of the Rabbit (Hare) and Tortoise has always been the tale that we’re most familiar with while growing up. And the story goes a little like this:

So, Rabbit takes a couple of days to consider his strengths and explore his weaknesses with some selfreflection and work on improving them by employing the correct tools and strategies. He then challenges the Tortoise to a rematch and emerges victories. Instead of being overconfident and lazy and taking naps, he focused on pushing himself forward to finishing the race.

One day, there was a Rabbit was hopping around making fun of the Tortoise for being so slow. Do you ever get anywhere? Wouldn’t it take you a thousand years to get from point A to point B?” he asked with a mocking laugh. “Yes,” replied the Tortoise. “And I actually get there sooner than you may think. I’ll run you a race and prove it to you once and for all. The Rabbit was thoroughly amused by the Tortoise’s suggestion to run this race, but it sounded like fun so he agreed to it. Now we all know how this story turned out, ultimately the Tortoise won the race! Now was it the Rabbit’s arrogance or complacency that cost him the race? And if you were Rabbit, what would you do to achieve a different, more favorable outcome?
