INTRODUCTION The RTTY Listener is a special newsletter designed to inform and educate Universal customers on tuning various types of radio signals. It is provided as a service to Universal customers exclusively. The idea for the newsletter grew from a specialized product called the Info-Tech M-605 Frequency Division Multiplex Demodulator. When this product was introduced by Universal Radio in 1985, there was very little information on how to operate this device, and where to find "FDM" signals. The original intent of the newsletter was to share information gleaned from the Universal staff and other M-605 users on this subject. The early issues of The FDM Newsletter were informal and dealt strictly with tuning tips and frequencies for FDM stations. Issues 1 through 3 were cumulative. That is, issue 3 also contained the material from issues 1 and 2. Therefore, issues 1 and 2 were not included in this compilation. With Issue 7 the name of the newsletter was changed, and the scope of its coverage expanded. Now called The RTTY Listener, the publication now included Time Division Multiplex transmissions (now referred to as ARQ-M2 or ARQ Moore). This coincided with the introduction of another InfoTech product called the M-6000. This model was capable of decoding this new mode. The introduction of yet another new Info-Tech product further expanded the range of the newsletter starting with issue 12. Now with the M-800 Facsimile Converter, we began to explore the fascinating world of FAX reception. Greater coverage of "regular" Baudot stations was also being included. Issue 19 saw a revamping of the newsletter format. Laser quality printing and improved layout were introduced. Issue 20, which previews the Universal M-7000, is the last issue in this compilation and the last issue published through December of 1988. It is our hope that this publication will further your communications knowledge and help you understand and enjoy your product fully. Good Listening!

ITEM:

INFO-TECH M-605 NORMAL/REVERSE SENSE SWITCH. You may change from normal to reverse on either the M-605 or the M- 600. Most M-605 users prefer to change sense on the M-605.

ITEM:

INFO-TECH M-605 SPEED INDICATION. The speed setting on the M-605 has no apparent effect when copying mode b (HF) FDM signals. This is for FM 4GHZ satellite work only.

ITEM:

INFO-TECH M-600 FUNCTION 1 AUTO SPEED INDICATION . The key on the M-600/A does work with FDM signals. It can be very helpful in FDM work. Numerous 150 baud readings indicate improper tuning.

ITEM:

INFO-TECH M-600 SPEED SETTING. For mode b FDM work you will need to set the Baudot Speed on either 50 or 75 baud. (Note UPI 45 baud service on 4039.3 C04 Mb.)

ITEM:

INFO-TECH M-600 INPUT LEVEL SETTING. This control should be turned off (maximum counter clockwise) during FDM work.

ITEM:

JRC NRD-515 MODIFICATION. We have installed and tested a very exciting modification for the NRD-515. The NRD-515 delta control is too course for FDM work. We replace this pot w1th a 10 turn vernier to improve the resolution by a factor of ten! It makes mode b work much easier. Price for modification • $70.00 .

ITEM:

INFO-TECH M-605 CHANNEL SELECT. When going up or down FDM channels be sure leave enough time ( 7+ seconds) on each channel for the unit to 'lock'. Failure to do this will yield 'garbage' output even on 'good' channels.

NO OCTOBER ISSUE Because of Jack of mat~rjal, Issue 06 is being issued November l instead of October l,1985.

UPDATE OF STV MAGAZINE ARTICLE SEPTEMBER 1985 In the last issue (FDM/VNS 05) we discussed an article in the September issue of STY written by Virgill Mitchell called "Satellite Audio And Your Home Computer". It discussed the reception of RTTY and FAX transmission off the 4 GHz. satellites. The author reported f'OM on: COMSTAR 04 TRANS 16 3561 KHz. WEATHER TRANS 16 4765 KHz. AP PRESS COMSTAR D4 6311 KHz. COMSTAR 04 TRANS 16 OCCASIONAL RTTY 2267 KHz. COMSTAR Dl/2 TRANS 4 OCCASIONAL RTTY We have researched this and our findings are as follows: " Since the article was written, COMSTAR D4 (127"W) hns been moved and replaced with the new TELSTAR 303. " We checked transponder 16 of TELSTAR 303 here at Universal. We did find weather at 3561 kHz. and AP Press at 4765 kHz. just as the article jndicated! "' The FDM we encountered was not the "Mode d" type that we see in use by UPI on Westar III, as discussed in the the last FDM/VNS Newsletter (05). The FDM on Telstar 303 is "Mode b" ... just like what we get on shortwave (HF)!

COPYING FDM USING AN INFO- TECH M-605 AND A HOME-COMPlITER We strongly s u gges t the lnto-Tech M- 605 be used with the Info-Tec h M-600/A. However, it is ,eg ssi~..!.~ to use the M-605 for YUM d e mod and then feed the M-605 TTL output into a properly e quipped home computer. Most home computers can be configured for the reception of RTTY and Morse code . You simply add a computer int e rface (eg: Kantronics , AEA CP-1, HAL-CRI-200 etc), and commun ica tions sof tware ( Kantronj cs HamSot t ™, Hamtext'", AEA SWLTEXT'" etc) . (It should b e not e d that the " computer interface " route falls far. short ot dedi cated (eg: Info-Tech) equipment in terms of perf ormance on all but the strongest stations). To copy rDM we simply substitute the M-605 for the computer interface. The computer and so f tware remain the same. While we acknowledge that thjs can ano js bein~ done, we at Universa l are not in a position to instruct as to the ex a c t wiring requirements of a spec i fic computer. Thjs hook-up shou ld be attempted only by qualified individuals . A general block diagram follows :

MULTIPLEX

The M-6000 is capable of recP. iving Time Oivision Multiplexed signals based on CCIR recommend ation 342. These signals use the seven bit synchronous error-detecting Moore Code which functio ns similarly to t o code used for Sitor tr ansmissions . TOH operation uses a full duplex system which interleaves 2 or 4 separate RTTY aata channels on a single ca rri er. This mode provides for ARQ (Automatic ReQuest) error correc tion. While a ch ann el is sending data at one end of the link, the cor respond ing "receiving" channel is transmitting contro l information, indicati ng whether the data was received correctly or if errors were detected. Since the system is full duplex, these signals are transmitted on separat e frequencies. TOM frequencies are always paired. Stations utilizing TOM will typically keep both transmitters running fulltime, running sync puls es in the absence of traffic. This keeps the datalink in "sync" and also "maintains" the freq u ency . It is important to note, therefore that when monitoring TDM frequencies is is possible to be correctly tun ed and phased and still obtain n o print. It is not uncommon to copy a TOM frequency for hours without traffic, and then to have telex messages start abruptly. A channel may switch back and forth from receiving to sending or from idling to sending. Al so on a 2 channel TDM signal, one, both or n ei ther channel may be sending text at any given time. Like most other "utility" stations ••. the circuit is used on an as-needed bases.

TDM

FOR.MATS

There are two TDM formats: 2 channel and 4 channel. TDM2 has two channels referred to as A and B. TDM2 may be sent at 86. 96 or 100 baud. Any shift may be used. The TDM2 I hove encountered hos been at 96 baud and shifted at either 425 or 850 Hz. I have found bo th channels A and 8 to be used. Four chann e l TOM (TDM4). TDM4 channels are referred to as A, B1 C or 0 . TDH4 rates arc 172, 192 and 200 baud. I have not yet encountered TDM4 transmissions.

TDM

USERS

Who uses TDM? This remains a largely unanswered question since TOM receive equipment was not readily available until the development of the Info-Tech M-6000. Your editor has found several TOM stations in a sho rt period of time. In a few hours of listening I have found TOM is use by the French military, Cuban diplomatic, East European diplom atic and Vatican City users! No doubt many other services wil l be discovered by M-6000 owners. Please send me your TOM loggings to be included in the RTTY LISTENER. We will publish your loggings anonymously if you wish.

TDM

I am happy to report that tuning TOM is 100 times (at least!) easier to tune than HF FDM! I spent over ten hours tuning my M-605 before getting readable copy from my first FDM station. I was reading TOM within 20 minutes. However, there are some tricks to tuning TOM. First let's review the required controls on the M-6000. To get into the TOM mode you must press the key on the M-6000. You must press it 3 times to get TDM2 on the status line. Next find a TOM station. 11109.0 or 11111.1 is a good bet in the day. Try 5098.7 or 5160.l at night. TOM sounds like fast RTTY . Keep in mind that a TOM s i gnal always sounds the same ••• whether they are transmitting text or idling!

n

As always ••• tune the Mark first. As usual press (9) to select the correct shift. Now (just for fun) press the key. You should get a BAUD 8=100 reading. This is a strong clue that you are indeed on a 96 Baud TDM2 station. There are very very few 100 Baud RTTY stations that are not TDM2! Keep this trick in mind as you evaluate poten tial TOM frequencies. Next press the button to attempt automatic synchronization. If the LED does not light you must next try manual snychronization. Press . If the DATA LED is ON and the DATA ERl~OR LED is totally OFF you are synchronized. If not press again. Repeat this procedure up to seven times trying to get the DATA LED totally ON and the DATA ERROR LED totally OFF. Pause about 3 seconds between each press of the to give the M-6000 time to snyc. When the DATA LED is totally on and the DATA ERROR LED ts totally OFF you are in sync. (By the way don't worry too much about the TUNE ERROR LED. You always want to keep that as dim as possible, but some flickering is acceptable on TDM as well as other modes). If . you are getting repeating characters (or random characters) you are not it sync. You should be getting readable text or a fixed cursor. If you are getting a fixed cursor try the other TDM2 channel. Press one·e · to move to chan-nel 8. Press it again to move to back to A. If nothing is happening, yet all indicators are correct, the station is simply not passing traffic at this time! This is perhaps the biggest "challenge" to TOM! The signal 11 sounds 11 the same whether they transmit text or just idle . Furthermore •• • it is common for TDM stations to send only sync. pulses for hours on end. They only 11 talk" when they need to. You may think it is rather foolish to keep transmitters online for hours when no traffic is being passed. There are two reasons why TOM stations do this: l. It keeps their frequency occupied. No one will come along and "steal" it. 2 . It keeps their equipment synchronized. In the next RTTY LISTENER I will explain more about TDM synchronization.

Per a tip from a c ustomer, I found a new RTTY service on the Galaxy 1 sa tellite . It is transmitting in regular 75 baud Baudot ! To copy th is service simply connect the un fi l tered video output of your satellite receiver directly into the aud~~ inpu t of your M-600 (o r M-200 or M-6000 ). Set your demodulator to 75 baud Baudot , 170 Hz shif t. Tune in t ran sponder 03 on Galaxy 1 (WGN). Tune to 7754 .4 kHz on you r shortwave receiver. The 75 baud RTTY signal will be weak, but will provide 1007. copy if carefull y tuned (even on a 6 foot dish). The service you will be copyin g is called "UPDATE". It is a nice blend of news, sports and we ather. It can a l so be found at 7769.5, 7799.0, and 7813.0 kHz. I have not deierm i n e d if these are simply parallel frequencies or slightl y different services . You will qui c kl y note that this service utilizes a 32 cha racter l ine . This s u ggests to me thnt this is n "feed" to cable companies. It is probably either fed directly out to subscribe rs in th is format or perhaps converted to vidtcx for VBI transmission. Try for it!
