T H E PHILATELY OF T H I R D REICH GERMANY

1933-1945

Foreword I have been collecting British Commonwealth philatelic items for over 45 years and although quite a comprehensive collection has been assembled in that time, a few years ago a new philatelic subject was needed to feed my philatelic bug. Given that my favorite era is mid-20th century and that I had also decided to collect some area that had a start and a finish, the options were narrowed down. After seeing displays at stamp shows, I was amazed at the variety of items (stamps, cancels, postcards etc.) that came from Third Reich Germany. So my new subject was decided upon! Basic collecting of the stamps is pretty much the same for any collector but, sooner or later, philatelic literature other than stamp catalogues would be needed to understand the changes in the political arenas that influenced the subjects of stamp issues. After some searching I found there was not much literature written in English for the beginner collector of Third Reich philately, except for a book by Alf Harper & W. Scheck entitled The Stamps of Germany Third Reich. I eventually obtained the book and found it most valuable in the understanding of Third Reich philately. To help with my collecting, I joined the Germany & Colonies Philatelic Society here in Great Britain. They have a Third Reich Study Group which I promptly also joined. They have both been sources of information about Third Reich philately that is indispensable to the collector, including indications that the book by Alf Harper & W. Scheclt was not as accurate as once thought.

I then decided to embark on creating this book, based on Alf Harper's original 1966 worlt, as accurately as possible and with full color illustrations throughout of all the stamps, miniature sheets, booltlets, special postal cards & special postmarlts used on the stamp issues. My first move was to contact Alf Harper's widow, Olwyn, to inform her of my intentions. She then gave me her kind permission and best wishes in my endeavours. Throughout this book the political and historical matters are mentioned to further understand the everyday climate in Germany and Europe at that time. Also, for the first time, all philatelic items are identified in the "MICHEL" catalogue numbering system. So enjoy the book and happy collecting!
