INTENTIONALLYFORMED SKULLS IN SOUTH AND SOUTH-EAST EUROPE OMANIA, BULGARIA, GREECE, JUGOSLAVIA AND ITA_LY)· iOMANIA

1. Constanta. 4 intentionally formed skulls have been discovered to gether with 60 skulls of normal form. Published by E • Pittard, 19001901.

2. Trusesti (near Jijia). Mentioned in Studi si cercetari ist. veche, Bucha;est, III (1952), pp. 83, 117. 3. Vadului-Voda (Bessarabia). Published by A. Donici, 1931. 4. Pogorasti (Botosani district, Suceava). 4 skeletons have been exca vated, the second of which (archaeologically defined as Sarmatian dat'..ng back to the 3rd century A.D.) had an intentionally formed skull. The skull of a man was medium formed. Published by M. Critescu, 1964.

5. Tirgsor. Diaconu (1965) published both archaeological and anthro pological finds from cemeteries from the 3rd-4th century A.D. In the first cemetery, archaeologically dating from the..3rd century A.D., 10 skulls out of 20 (possibly Sarmatians) were intentionally formed. Detailed anthropological evaluation is still awaited. As well as Dia conu (196 5), S. Nicolaescu-Plopsor has worked on the finds. 6. Tatina (near Spantov). The skull of a 60 year old man. Published by 0. Necrasov and S. Antoniu, 1962. BULGARIA 1.

Novi Pasar. The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences carried out archae ological excavations on the site in 1948-1949. Among the skeletons excavated (Protobulgarians from the 8th-9th century A.D.) two had intentionally formed skulls. One of them belonged to an old man (grave 19) the other to a younger woman (grave 28). Published by P • Boev, 1 95 7 •

GREECE No skulls with intentional head formation dating from historical times have been found in Greece. Those excavated in Cyprus have already been mentioned in the chapter dealing with the custom of head formation. An extremely "de formed" skull was found about a hundred years ago at Trikeri (V olos-Thessaly) but ileither its origin nor its ethnic place are lmown. The find is not yet pub lished, but can be found in the Athens Anthropological Museum under inventory number Tv 7 (information from N. Xirotiris). JUG03IAVIA 1.

Jakovo (Surcin, in Slavonia). Intentionally formed skulls were found in the 19 graves of a cemetery dating from the 6th century A. D. Anthropological examinations have not yet been carried out. Men tioned byV. Lebzelter inForschung undForschritte XI (1935), p.319. 21
