PREFACE My attention was first called to this subject by Professor J. L. Gerig of Columbia University. Whatever there is of interest in my treatment of it is due, in large measure, to his many valuable suggestions and encouragement as the work has progressed. I wish to express my deep gratitude to him and the other members of the Romance Faculty of Columbia, who have frequently been helpful with friendly criticism. Thanks are especially due to Professors Carré and Laumonier, visiting French Professors at Columbia during the sessions of 1922 and 1924, for much valuable aid. I am also greatly indebted to Dr. Irving Brown for his assistance to me in preparing the work for the press, and attending to the details of publication.

INTRODUCTION Practically all students of Balzac have had more or less to say in regard to the sources of his work. These statements are at great variance with each other, ranging from a flat denial of any indebtedness to a charge of rank plagiarism. The statement is made by Barbey d'Aurevilly that "Balzac ne procède de personne. Il procède de lui-même et de l'esprit universel." 1 At the other extreme we find conclusions such as those of J. H. Retinger, who writes as follows: "Les premières influences qui ont beaucoup inpiré Balzac semblent être les romans fantastiques de l'école de Madame Radcliffe, de Monk Lewis et de Maturin Le Centenaire est une traduction de Melmoth de Maturin Le Vicaire des Ardennes doit au Moine plus que le sujet La Dernière Fée rappelle beaucoup ¡'Explained supernatural de Madame Radcliffe." 2 It cannot be denied that the influence of Ann Radcliffe and the "school of horror" is very pronounced in the early works of Balzac, but it may be said with equal justice, that the traces of Chateaubriand, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Rabelais, and various writers of the French classical school are also very much in evidence.
