A_larg« soT)g bouki highly esteemed by Mennonites. It was originally published in 1583 and printed in Basel as late as 1838f Gerfnantown editions appeared in 1742, 17ol, 1767 and 1785. It contains songs on martyred Christians, especially Baptists, persecuted, tortured and killed by other Christians. Some of the airs, such as: JEs c/ing ein Frdulein mil dem Kruq, and Ich sah den Herrn von Fatkenstein, are in strange contrast with the luriti contents of the songs. Many of these give biographical details of the martyrs.

Johannes Hildebrand (1679-1765) was one of the prominent men in Ephrata. He was looked upon as an adept in Jacob Boehme's theosophy. As a delegate to several of Count Zinzendorf s conferences he upheld the superiority of virgin life. After the third conference Hildebrand and his Ephrata colleagues withdrew from further attendance. He then took an active part in the literary warfare against Zinzendorf and the Moravians, about which see Chronicon Ephratense, transl. p. 152.

This is the last and most extensive collection of Ephrata hymns, numbering 725, of which not a few are of considerable length. Most of them had been printed before in the Franklin hymnbooks (1730 1736) and in the Turtdtavbe. The preface, probably written by Peter Miller, touches upon the salient points of the Ephrata religion, the organization and peculiar features of the community and the merits of Conrad Beissel. The Wunderspiel itself has four divisions, the first, Beissel's own, contains 441 hymns all written by him, the 72 hymns of the second division were contributed by the brethren, except a few taken from Fr. Kock's and G. Tersteegen's writings; the third, which has the fragrant heading: Ein angenehnur Geruch der LUien und Bosen, is the poetical offering of 100 hymns by the sisters, and the last, numbering 111 hymns, came from the wider circle of devotees who were connected with the Ephrata establishment.

Altogether there were about thirty-five men and twenty-five women who inspired by the sacred muse, a^fact to which an edition of the Turldtavie with names printed under the text gives the clue. For fine texture of thought and neat versification brother Jaebez, (Peter Miller) surpasses all felt

others.

ATHA-

NASIA

Conrad Beissel, the head of the Ephrata convent, died, upward of 77 years old, on the 6th of July 1768. Sister Anastasia (Thome) one of the hymnwriters, was a Swiss woman, whose earthly love and pious resignation are the subject of a pleasing episode in the Ephrata chronicles.

Hildeburn. According to Thomas' History of Printing (Second Ed. vol. I, p. 322) the widow of N. Hasselbach (the printer who, in 1763, moved his business from Chestnut Hill to Baltimore) sold the printing materials of her deceased husband to William Goddard in Baltimore, who again disposed of them to F. Bailey in Lancaster.

no Zions Church was used by the English during the occupation (1777 1778) for hospital purposes and the interior had been entirely ruined. On the resumption of divine service the worshipers had to provide for their seats as, well as they could by bringing chairs; the congregation was too poor to undertake repairs on the scale required. When at length, in 1782, the church had been renovated, the joyous event was celebrated by thanksgiving services.

Reading Adler of July 27th.

ADDENDA. p. 6. The second title on p. 6 was taken from the Chronicon Epkratense, p. 35, which appears to assign the publication of the book to the year 1728. After a part of the present volume had gone through the press, the writer discovered a copy (the only one so far known to exist) in the collection of Mr Henry Heilman in I^ebanon. The book turns out to be a Franklin print of 1730, similar in appearance to the G'ditliche Liebes und Lobesgethone of the same year. Its correct title is as follows

Philadelphia.
