Preface

For students who study Chinese as a foreign language, it’s crucial for them to enlarge the scope of their reading to improve their comprehension skills. The “Rainbow Bridge” Graded Chinese Reader series is designed to provide a collection of interesting and useful Chinese reading materials. This series grades each volume by its vocabulary level and brings the learners into every scene through vivid storytelling. The series has the following features:a I. A gradual approach by grading the volumes based on vocabulary levels. We have consulted the New HSK Vocabulary (2012 Revised Edition), the Graded Chinese Syllables, Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages (National Standard) and the 1,500 Commonly Used High Frequency Chinese Vocabulary, along with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to design the “Rainbow Bridge” vocabulary grading standard. The series is divided into seven levels (Starter*, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5 and Level 6) for students at different stages in their Chinese education to choose from. For each level, new words are no more than 20% of the vocabulary amount as specified in the corresponding HSK and CEFR levels. As the levels progress, the passage length will in turn increase. The following table indicates the corresponding “Rainbow Bridge” level, HSK and CEFR levels, the vocabulary amount, and number of characters. * Represented by “S” on the back cover.

11

救(jiù)v. save, a rescue e.g., 那个人落水了, 快救救他!

The Crown Prince or a Leopard Cat? Birth of the Crown Prince

48

This story took place during China’s Song Dynasty. There was an emperor called Zhenzong. At the age of 50, he still didn’t have a son. He had two young concubines surnamed Li and Liu. Emperor Zhenzong had been longing for a son so much. One year, both Li and Liu were found pregnant during the Mid-autumn Festival. Overjoyed, the emperor sent each of them a handkerchief on which was written “Dedicated to Li” and “Dedicated to Liu” respectively. Then he told the two concubines and his ministers, “Whoever gives birth to a boy first will become my empress.” Li and Liu were delighted to hear this. Li, as a kind-hearted person, was liked by many. Liu was different from her: despite her beautiful face, she had a black heart. The woman had been preoccupied with the thought of becoming the empress, so much so that she stayed in her palace all day scheming with Guo Huai, her servant. “I’m determined to become the empress!” she told Guo Huai. “I’ve never believed in God or Heaven. What I trust are power and money! After my parents passed away, my four younger

brothers and I had great difficulty filling our stomachs. God never helped me out then! Now that I’ve become the emperor’s concubine, I want to be the empress and even the empress dowager in the future!” “That won’t be easy!” Guo Huai replied. “What if Li has a boy before you do?” Liu thus made up her mind to kill Li’s baby. At that moment, a maid came in with Liu’s little leopard cat in her arms. Looking at the cat, the wicked woman hit upon a horrible idea. The evening came when Li was going to deliver her baby. A maid came to the emperor’s palace and said, “Her Highness Li is going to give birth. Please hurry to see it, Your Majesty.” Liu, who was sitting beside the emperor, said immediately, “Your Majesty, it’s very cold and dark outside. You have been working so hard the whole day and need a good rest. You’d better stay here. I can go visit Sister Li. Once the baby is born, I will bring it to you. Please rest assured. I will treat her as my younger sister.” Emperor Zhenzong was pleased to hear this. “Liu is so kind,” he thought. “She treats both me and Li so well. I’m blessed to have such a good concubine, and Li is so lucky to have a sister like her!” He felt so touched. “Alright,” he said, “you can go visit Li and her baby. We are so lucky to have you around us. You’re the most kind-hearted woman I’ve ever met. I like you so much!” Liu went away with a smile. However, there was something evil in her eyes that was neglected by everyone. As she passed by

49

Guo Huai, she gave him a wink. Her attendant soon understood what she meant.

50

In another palace, Li, who had just given birth, was asleep. By her side lay a baby boy, who was also asleep. Outside the palace, Guo Huai was having a conversation with an imperial physician. He secretly handed a pack of gold to the physician. The greedy doctor then entered the room, took the baby out and gave it to Guo. Guo Huai had a sinister smile on his face as he left with the baby. He hid the baby in a laundry basket and covered it with several pieces of dirty clothing. He called in A Zhu, a young maid. “The dirty clothes in this basket were worn by Her Highness Li when she delivered her child,” he told her. “Go and throw the basket into the river outside the palace. Remember, you can’t look into the basket or tell others what you are doing. It will bring you bad luck if you do. Will you remember what I said?” A Zhu nodded her head obediently and left with the basket. What did Liu do during this time? She asked someone to kill a leopard cat and skin it. Then she wrapped the cat’s body in a baby’s swaddling clothes and headed to the emperor’s palace. “Your Majesty, please have a look!” she told Emperor Zhenzong. “It’s Sister Li’s baby.” Hearing this, the emperor quickly walked over, as did the palace maids — everybody was eager to take a look at the newborn. As the swaddling clothes were unfolded, there appeared a horrible cat body.... Frightened, the emperor crumpled to the ground and shouted, “My Goodness! This is no baby! It’s a demon!” The servant girls all cried in fear. Imperial Concubine Li had given birth to a “demon”. This was something highly ominous for the whole nation. Emperor

Zhenzong was furious and ordered his servants to execute Li immediately. The servants and maids pleaded in tears to spare her life. Finally, the emperor agreed not to execute her. But he ordered Li to be confined to a room and never to be allowed to come out. Li was heart-broken to learn the sad news. While weeping she insisted that she had given birth to a lovely boy. Unfortunately, no one believed her, as they had all seen a cat body in Liu’s arms. Ten days later, the wicked woman gave birth to a boy. Everybody in the imperial palace was delighted. The emperor decided on that same day that the boy would be the future emperor. Thus Liu became the new empress. Prince Zhao Defang, younger brother of the emperor, also arrived that day. Like the ministers, he showed up to offer congratulations for the birth of the little prince. “Your Majesty, it’s great that you have a crown prince and our country now has a future emperor,” Zhao said to the emperor. “My wife also gave birth to a son last month. I gave him the name Zhao Zhen. I hope he and the crown prince will become good friends. Shall we let them play and read together? I think that will make both of these children happy.” The emperor was pleased to hear this. “That would be wonderful!” he said. “I hope the two kids will treat each other like brothers. Don’t hesitate to bring your child to my palace and let them play together.” Upon returning home from the palace, the prince told his wife what the emperor had said. His wife, who was sitting beside

51

a table holding a baby in her arms, began shedding tears. The baby in her arms was none other than the boy born by Imperial Concubine Li ten days previously. How did this happen? Ten days previously, A Zhu walked a long way after she exited the palace, but the river was still not in sight. The basket was so heavy that she felt tired and sat down under a big tree to have a rest. Suddenly, a cry was heard from within the basket. Terrified, A Zhu dared not look into it nor make any move. She had no idea what scary thing was inside the basket. Chen Lin, Zhao Defang’s attendant, was passing by on an errand. Hearing the cries, he stopped and asked A Zhu what had happened. 52

In tears, A Zhu told the whole story to Chen Lin. Seeing the baby in the basket, the upright and clever attendant suddenly remembered something. Just as he was passing by the main gate of the imperial palace, he heard the servants talking about the demon delivered by Concubine Li the night before.... Looking at the baby lying in the basket, Chen Lin was struck by a realization. “Is this baby the...?” he thought. “I will let the prince know immediately about this grave matter. If the boy was indeed born by Li, he is so unfortunate. The prince, who is upright and kind-hearted, should be able to come up with a solution to protect him.” Without anyone noticing, Chen led A Zhu, along with the baby, to the prince’s residence. At that time, the prince and his wife were weeping in their room. It turned out their son had contracted an illness upon birth and had died the previous night. The baby’s life lasted only 20 days. Overcome with grief, the prince buried him in his back garden but didn’t tell anyone about it.

Chen Lin led A Zhu to the prince. Upon hearing A Zhu’s story, the wise prince immediately saw the light and felt very sad. He knew clearly that Concubine Liu was a wicked woman who would do any bad deed to achieve her goal of becoming empress. Her beautiful face and smooth tongue had won her the emperor’s favor and trust. The prince thought, “Even if I send the baby back to the palace now, my brother will not believe what I say. Besides, no one will be able to protect such a little baby there.” “What should I do? If I send him back, Liu will kill him for sure. What should I do?” The prince talked to himself while pacing to and fro in his room, thinking hard for a solution. At that moment, the baby cried. The prince’s kind-hearted wife nursed the baby and then dressed him in the clothes of her own baby. The prince hit upon an idea. He asked A Zhu and Chen Lin to stay silent on the matter and decided to raise the baby in his own residence. Once the boy had grown up, he would try to find the chance to let the emperor know the truth. Thus the prince went to the palace to offer his congratulations on the birth of the crown prince as the others did. Concubine Liu thought that Li’s baby had already died. No one knew the prince’s little son was none other than the baby born by Li. Liu became the empress and her four younger brothers all assumed high posts in the court. They committed many wrongdoings but nobody dared stand out and stop them for fear of Liu’s influence. People were aware that Emperor Zhenzong would only listen to the empress and that whoever dared act against her and her brothers would be doomed.

53

Concubine Li’s Escape Ten years later, Liu’s son became ill and died. Liu wept for many days. The emperor was getting older and was unable to have another child. Who would be the future emperor? If Emperor Zhenzong had no sons, his younger brother, the prince, would become the next emperor. Liu would hate to witness that. Instead, she wanted one of her brothers’ sons to be the crown prince. But this was turned down by Emperor Zhenzong. In the end, the ten-year-old Zhao Zhen, who was the prince’s little son, was conferred the title of the crown prince. The boy then left the prince’s residence and began living in the imperial palace where he was taught reading by his tutor and looked after by the maid A Zhu. The two often played together.

54

One fine day, the crown prince saw a cute puppy. He chased it all around before finally arriving at a dilapidated house. The door was locked and the keeper was not there. Out of curiosity, the little prince walked to the window. He heard a woman weeping inside. “Lady inside, why are you crying?” Zhao Zhen asked. “Are you unhappy? Everyone in the palace feels happy. All of them are dressed in beautiful clothes and eating delicious food!” In fact, the woman inside was none other than Imperial Concubine Li who had been put into confinement ten years previously. She continued weeping and said, “I’m cold, I’m hungry. Ten years has passed but no one has come to visit me. His Majesty must have forgotten me! I miss my child so much....” The kind-hearted little prince took out some desserts from his pocket and spoke through the window, “Give me your hand. I

have some food for you. I will talk to you. Don’t cry anymore.” Li came to the window, chatted with the boy and ate the desserts. From that day on, the crown prince went to the dilapidated house every day to visit the woman. Having been well aware of their relationship, A Zhu felt both happy and sad seeing mother and son chat with each other in a light-hearted manner. She said to Li, “Your Highness, please stay strong. Many people know very well you’re a kind person. The problem is that they dare not stand up to help you. Take care and you will surely meet with your child again.” Li was touched by this and nodded her head while watching A Zhu’s face. A Zhu dared not tell the crown prince that the poor woman was his real mother. Li felt much better from the day she met Zhao Zhen. The two talked a lot with each other and Li liked the boy very much. She thought, “If my child was still alive, he would be around the same age as the little prince. I miss my son so much! I live only to see him again some day.” One day during lunchtime, the empress saw the crown prince put a lot of fruits and desserts into his pocket. She asked him what he was doing. The little prince answered, “I’m bringing these to Li who is living in a dilapidated house. Her baby went missing at birth and people said she gave birth to a demon. She was then confined and only receives a little food and water each day. There have been no maids taking care of her and so I feel much pity for her.” The empress was fearful to hear this. She asked the little prince if there was anyone else who had talked to Li. The boy replied that A Zhu also talked to Li and the maid even cried after their conversation.

55

The empress felt even more fearful because she worried that her evil deed ten years previously might be revealed. Pretending to be touched, she said to the crown prince, “I’m sympathetic to her too! You can go to class now as the teacher is waiting for you. I will ask A Zhu to send the food to Li in a short while, is that fine?” Hearing this, the little prince joyfully went to class. Soon after the boy left, Liu called in Guo Huai to discuss a solution. “Never let others know what happened ten years ago,” Liu said. “I’m worried that the maid A Zhu might know something. She shouldn’t be alive any longer. As for Li, we should have ended her life much earlier! The crown prince is growing up day by day and we will be doomed if Li says something to him.”

56

Guo Huai nodded his head and said, “So what can I do for you, Your Highness?” Liu replied, “Set fire to Li’s house at night and burn her to death!” After a while, A Zhu came in to send some desserts and fruits. The empress asked in a cold tone, “A Zhu, how much do you know about what happened ten years ago?” “Ten years ago? What happened? I, I don’t know anything....” A Zhu pretended to be in a daze. But the empress didn’t believe her. She gave Guo Huai a wink, the latter quickly walked over and hit the maid on the head using a heavy stick. A Zhu tumbled to the ground and died! Guo wrapped the body in a quilt and called in a servant named Zhao Zhong. Guo Huai said to him, “This maid died of a sudden illness. Bury her outside the city!”

Zhao picked up A Zhu’s body and left the empress’s room. He dared not say anything, but felt very sad because he had been standing outside the room and it was clear that it was the empress and Guo who had killed the girl. Moreover, he overheard Liu’s plan to burn Concubine Li. Zhao Zhong was terrified. A Zhu and Zhao Zhong were very good friends. They often chatted with each other. Now A Zhu had died and Zhao was weeping while carrying the body of his good friend. Soon he reached Li’s house which wasn’t guarded by anyone. An idea flashed across his mind: “A Zhu has already died and I could do nothing to save her. But Her Highness Li is still alive. I should try to rescue her, or else A Zhu will have sacrificed her life for nothing!” Coming to the window of the dilapidated house, Zhao Zhong spoke to Li in a low voice and asked her to come over. Li walked to the window and asked, “Who are you? Why are you here?” Zhao answered, “I’m A Zhu’s friend. She was beaten to death just now by Guo Huai and the empress. Now they’ve ordered me to bury the body. They killed A Zhu because she had been compassionate to you and always talked with you. What’s worse, they are going to burn your house tonight!” Li began shedding tears as she listened to Zhao Zhong. She said to him, “Ten years ago I gave birth to a boy, but what Liu presented to the emperor was a freak. It must be Liu who tried to frame me! A Zhu visited me only a few times but was brutally killed. How wicked they are! My life will be ended this evening. What should I do now? I miss my child! Where is he...?” Zhao Zhong said to her, “You should find a way to live on, Your Highness. A Zhu can’t die in vain, and you need to find

57

your child. You should try to undo the injustice you and A Zhu have suffered. Your death will only make Liu and her gang glad and relieved. The crown prince is a kind-hearted boy, and in the capital there is an official surnamed Bao who is wise and upright. I will help you escape from here. When the crown prince succeeds to the throne, you can turn to Minister Bao and I’m sure he will help you out.” Li agreed with Zhao Zhong and made up her mind to flee. They carried the body into the room. Li switched clothes with A Zhu. Then Zhao Zhong helped her crawl out of the window. Li lay in the quilt, posing as the body of A Zhu. Zhao Zhong sent the “corpse” out of the palace.

58

In this way, Li managed to escape. That night, Guo Huai burnt the dilapidated house to the ground. A dead body was found the next day. No one knew it was A Zhu. People all said poor Concubine Li was burnt to death. The empress thus felt much relieved as both Li and A Zhu had “died” and there wouldn’t be anyone who knew about her bad deeds. She was overjoyed. Ever since Zhao Zhen had been sent to the palace, Prince Zhao Defang was on pins and needles. He worried that the empress might kill the boy if she discovered he was Li’s son and feared that she would end his own life if she found out what he had done a decade before. With the prince troubled by worry and fear each and every day, someone came to inform him that Li’s house had caught fire and that she was dead. Upon hearing the message, the prince was seized by sadness and fear. He was sad because Li had passed away before the mother and her son could recognize each other; he feared that

the empress would kill Zhao Zhen for sure once she discovered he was Li’s son. Day in and day out, the prince and his wife sat in their room racking their brains for a solution, but to no avail. The prince then ordered his servant to go to the palace and look for A Zhu. Unfortunately, the servant went three times but failed to find the maid. “Is A Zhu also...?” The prince’s fear grew. “If A Zhu was killed by Liu too, it’s highly likely that the empress knows what happened one decade ago. Will this wicked woman move on to kill Zhao Zhen? It’s so dangerous for him to live in the palace now! What should I do?” At this juncture, someone greeted the prince from outside, “Your Highness, I’m Chen Lin. I’ve completed my errand and returned.” The prince was delighted to hear Chen Lin’s voice. He called him in at once and told him what had occurred in the imperial palace over the past few days. He asked Chen Lin to think of a way to see whether the crown prince was safe and whether A Zhu was still alive or not.... Chen went to the palace early the next morning. Pretending to be a servant of the crown prince’s tutor, the clever Chen Lin followed the tutor’s carriage and arrived outside the room where Zhao Zhen studied. As the crown prince was having his class, Chen Lin talked to his maids. He learned from the girls that A Zhu had “contracted a sudden illness and died” and her body was taken out and buried by the servant Zhao Zhong. Chen Lin didn’t go to look for Zhao right away. Instead, he waited outside the palace. After quite a few days, Zhao Zhong had a day off. He left the palace to buy some stuff. Chen Lin stopped him on a quiet path.

59

“Are you Zhao Zhong?” Chen Lin said. “I’m A Zhu’s brother. As I set off for the capital, my parents asked me to pay her a visit. Several days ago, I went to find her but was told by the palace maids that my younger sister had died of an illness. I’m eager to know where she is buried. Do you know anything about that?” Zhao Zhong was terrified to hear what Chen Lin said as he worried that others would know he had set Concubine Li free. So he turned around and began to run. Chen Lin seized him and said, “Do you think you can escape? Since the empress and Guo Huai didn’t spare the lives of Concubine Li and A Zhu, do you think they will let you off?” Zhao Zhong had no idea what he should do.

60

Chen Lin added, “But don’t be afraid. Don’t you want to stay away from evil people like the empress and Guo Huai? I can help you escape.” Zhao Zhong lowered his head, speechless. There’s no doubt he wanted to flee the horrible palace; however, where could he go after losing his job? Seeing him lower his head without saying anything, Chen Lin took out a gold piece from his clothes and put it in Zhao’s hand. “With this, you’ll never need to return to the palace,” he told Zhao Zhong. “I will lead you out of the city and you can buy some land to start a new life. Don’t go back to the palace anymore.” Zhao Zhong seemed to be enlightened and nodded his head. After making clear all the things that happened on the night the fire broke out, Chen Lin sent Zhao Zhong out of the city and arranged everything for him to make a new living. Chen Lin returned to the prince’s residence that evening. The prince learned what had happened to A Zhu and Concubine Li, but didn’t give any comment. Filled with a mixed feeling of sadness and delight, the prince thought: “A Zhu is dead, what a miserable girl! Fortunately, Li is still alive and the little prince is

safe now. And it’s good that Zhao Zhong has fled.” He then told Chen Lin, “It’s fine since the crown prince is safe for now. After he grows up and becomes the emperor, we will let him know the things that happened one decade ago and what’s gone on today.” Chen Lin replied, “I get it. By that time, the empress and Guo Huai will not be able to kill him.” The prince nodded his head. What happened to Li after she escaped from the palace? She didn’t have a penny, nor could she make a living by herself. Every day she had to beg for food at the capital’s major road crossings. She wept each time she remembered her child. As time went by, her eyesight became worse and worse. After several months, she couldn’t see anything. When asked by someone who she was, Li dared not tell them she was an imperial concubine, but answered, “I come from far away and don’t have any family. My eyes can no longer see. People just call me Granny Li.” One day, Li was weeping on the roadside, “My child, my dear, where are you now?” A child beggar walked to her and sat down. The child said, “Are you Granny Li? I heard the others call you this. My name is Fan Zhonghua. I don’t have a dad or mom and live alone. I want someone to be my mother. Are you willing to become my mom?” Li stopped her tears. Fan Zhonghua took up Li’s hand and put it on his face, saying, “Let me be your child. In this way, I will have a mother and you can have a son.” Li held the boy in her arms, as if she was hugging her own child. From then on, the two lived together.

61

Reunion Time flew by. Eleven years passed. Emperor Zhenzong passed away. Zhao Zhen ascended the throne and Liu became the empress dowager. The new emperor made a wise decision by appointing the upright official Bao Zheng as the chief judge. People in the country liked and supported the minister, whereas evildoers always stood in awe of him.

62

One day, when Minister Bao was about to return to the capital after an official trip, many people rushed to the street, waiting for his arrival — they were there to catch a glimpse of the wise and upright minister. It turned out the empress dowager’s four younger brothers had committed a lot of crimes in other places in the country and Bao had brought all of them to justice. Upon learning the exciting news, people in the capital became overjoyed. The crowd cheered as Minister Bao’s carriage approached. At that moment, an old woman walked into the middle of the road and cried out, “Minister Bao, please save me! I’m Imperial Concubine Li who lived in the palace more than 20 years ago. I was grievously wronged and I need your help!” The spectators fell into silence while fixing their eyes on the old granny. “Imperial Concubine Li?” the minister asked in astonishment. “Wasn’t she burned to death long ago?” “Minister, I didn’t die. Someone intended to set a fire and burn me to death 11 years ago, but thankfully I was saved by a kind-hearted person. I want to tell you all the things that have happened.” Prince Zhao Defang came to Bao Zheng and whispered something to him. Hearing this, Minister Bao said to the old woman, “Come with me. I have something to ask you.”

Fan Zhonghua, who came along with Li, was stunned speechless. How did Granny Li, who had been living a beggar’s life with him, suddenly turn into “Imperial Concubine Li”? What on earth? Minister Bao, the prince and Granny Li entered the imperial palace together and met with the emperor. After hearing what Li said, the emperor was shocked and couldn’t believe that it was true. But the old prince told him, “The granny is telling the truth, Your Majesty. My servant Chen Lin will tell you the things that occurred in the palace 21 years ago. There is also another servant named Zhao Zhong who knows exactly what took place 11 years ago. I can summon them right away.” Soon Chen Lin and Zhao Zhong came to the imperial palace. Minister Bao asked them to state the things that had happened years ago. Their statements corresponded with those of Li and the prince. At last, Minister Bao asked Li, “What did you wear when you were saved by Zhao Zhong 11 years ago?” “I wore A Zhu’s clothes, which were the clothes of palace maids. I still have them.” “Can you recall what the late emperor gave you after learning you became pregnant 21 years ago?” “The emperor sent me a handkerchief with his handwriting on it. It said ‘Dedicated to Li’. Concubine Liu also received a similar handkerchief. I brought mine with me.” Minister Bao took the handkerchief and looked at it. Then he presented the handkerchief to the emperor, who examined it and said, “That’s right. When I was a child, I saw a handkerchief like this at the empress dowager’s palace on which was written

63

‘Dedicated to Liu’.” The truth had been revealed. The young emperor walked to Li with tears in his eyes. He hugged his mother and the two began weeping in each other’s arms. The old prince and Minister Bao also shed tears. The prince said, “This is great, great! Twentyone years has passed and you finally meet each other. How encouraging this is!” The others at the scene were all moved to tears. Fan Zhonghua said, “I thought mom must be crazy to say she was an imperial concubine. But the fact is she is the real mother of the emperor.”

64

Minister Bao immediately ordered Chen Lin to lead the imperial guards to arrest the empress dowager and Guo Huai. Having committed so many wrongdoings, Liu was well aware that she wouldn’t be able to escape. As she learned Li and Minister Bao were heading to the palace, she killed herself in her chamber. Guo Huai fled the palace, but was found and killed by the dispatched servants before long. The young emperor was finally reunited with his mother. The old prince Zhao Defang, Chen Lin and Zhao Zhong, who had offered their help, were all rewarded. Feeling grateful to Fan Zhonghua, the emperor took him as his younger brother. A temple was then built in commemoration of A Zhu, the kindhearted maid. Many years has passed, yet the story of “the Crown Prince or a Leopard Cat” is still told among the people. It speaks of the truth that good men will get help and those with an evil heart will receive punishment sooner or later.
