HOW TO USE THIS BOOK: This is a book about problems , and about solving them . The problems are on ly rarely original . Some are of painful antiquity. We are in no sense authors , merely editors. The book has come abo u t because of something specia l that happened at some of the Open Univers ity ' s 1975 residential Summer Schools at Stirli ng University . There seems to be no good reason why the ideas behind this book should have shown fruit when they did. What happened could have h appened at any time , or in any place. What happened was CHEZ ANGELIQUE (at an earlier time , Club Kassab) ; This was simply a mathematical nightclub - .a cross between a cabaret-act and a folk - club perhaps. Tutors and students alike got up from the floor to present their puzzles. The range was enormo u s: mathematica l puns , logic ' quickies ', problems without solution , research problems from the frontiers of mathematics .....
