“Flower power” is more than a dated slogan—it describes the remarkable effect of the 38 remedies based on the essences of flowers discovered and developed by Dr. Edward Bach. Operating on homeopathic principles, the Bach remedies have been employed by physicians and other health practitioners for more than 50 years, with consistent effectiveness in a variety of conditions. This introduction to the Bach remedies details their properties, gives accounts of their powers, lists sources, and contains a special questionnaire to help the reader determine which remedies may be specifically suited to his or her personality.

In the early 1930s the noted British physician and scientist Edward Bach discovered that many of his patients’ emotional and psychological difficulties predisposed them to the onset of physical disease. Additionally, these difficulties—such as anxiety, fear, resentment, jealousy, even lack of self-confidence— complicated physical disorder once manifested, making it more difficult to treat. In his search for a safe and effective treatment Bach eventually succeeded in discovering thirty-eight flowering plants, trees, and special waters, preparations of which have proved to assist in resolving a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties. His discoveries are known today as the Bach Remedies. Used successfully for over half a century by physicians and other health care professionals worldwide, these preparations are among those on the leading edge of a new direction in medicine. This direction is away from strong pharmaceutical drugs, toward more natural, non-habit forming preparations which gently assist the body in mobilizing its own internal healing capabilities.

Janice Harper was devastated by the loss of her husband. She could not let go of the idea that she had been unfairly deprived of someone who meant the world to her. At first she became angry and resentful; following this, she became weak and withdrawn. Within six to eight months she developed migraine headaches, digestive problems and, eventually, a dull, aching pain in her lumbar region. She sought and received treatment which brought only temporary relief. During this time Mrs. Harper’s doctor became concerned with her deteriorating emotional health and lack of response to treatment, THE BACH REMEDIES / 1

realizing that some deeper emotional factor was interfering with the body’s ability to regain homeostasis.’ While this case is fictitious, the problem is not. Today many physicians know that emotional and psychological stress can predispose a person to physical disorder, at the same time complicating that disorder and making it more difficult to treat. Studies in the newly emerging field of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), conducted at major universities, research facilities and

medical centers throughout the country, reveal: that negative emotions can disrupt nervous-system functions, hormone levels and immunological responses, thereby reducing the body’s

resistance to disease.” What,

then, can be done to stabilize these negative emo-

tions, and ultimately reestablish a greater foundation for wellness? Dr. Bach, a pathologist, immunologist and bacteriologist, noted

that anxiety,

worrisome

thoughts,

even

lack of self-

confidence, so depleted an individual's vitality that the body lost its natural resistance and became vulnerable to infection and other illnesses. “To bring oneself back into harmony, back into balance, requires the development of a positive loving nature,” Dr. Bach wrote. Thus, merely treating a disease does not deal with

the cause of the problem.

we

“We have so long blamed the germ, the weather, the food eat as the causes of disease,” continued Dr. Bach, “but

many of us are immune in an influenza epidemic, many love the exhilaration of a cold wind and many can eat cheese and drink black coffee late at night with no ill effects. . . . It is only when we allow doubt and depression, indecision or fear to creep in that we become sensitive to outside influences.’ Bach went further in his understanding and explanation of the primary cause of disease by stating that all illness, whether emotional, psychological or physical, ““grows out of a conflict between our personality and our Soul.” That illness is no more than areflection of this most primary conflict and manifests a8 a signal that we are out of harmony with ourselves.*

2 / THE BACH REMEDIES

Take, for example, Mrs. Harper’s case, the loss of a loved one. In grief and despair, the personality—that part of the psyche responsible for maintaining its own interests as it strives for autonomy—personalized the loss as an outside act directed against the self. This juxtaposed the more profound wisdom of the higher self, the Soul, which understands there is no loss as

we are all born out of and ultimately return to the same source. Out of this deeper conflict, resentment developed. This resentment is the first manifested sign that we have fallen out of harmony within, and, if not heeded, will lead to a more con-

crete disorder. “In illness there is a change of mood from that in ordinary life, and those who are observant can notice this change often before, and sometimes long before, the disease appears.’” Bach’s work in both the material and esoteric sciences disclosed that specific psychoemotional states, certain personality traits, and behavioral patterns, manifested as a result of and di-

rectly reflected this conflict between personality and Soul. These included

such things as fear, resentment,

hatred, envy, jeal-

ousy, cruelty to others, even lack of self-confidence. Bach meticulously categorized these and other disturbances and their associated psychoemotional states into a new system of healing, one based on higher principles of wisdom and truth. PNI researchers, while unable to adequately explain the underlying psychospiritual links, confirm Bach’s original observations

that, if left unresolved, resultant psychoemotional disturbances inevitably lead to physical disease. Their studies reveal that one’s psychoemotional state can suppress or stimulate immune

cell activity, adrenal gland hormones (ACTH) and neurotrans-

mitters, including endorphins.° These in turn affect a myriad of bodily processes for better or worse. Codepending on sociocultural and environmental factors and a person’s genetic predisposition to disease, these processes, once negatively affected, can lead to specific functional disorganization. These functional difficulties can include: headaches, fatigue,

allergies, predisposition to colds and other infections, female

THE BACH REMEDIES / 3

problems, sexual dysfunction, digestive disorders, including constipation, and other irregularities. These problems, among others, are the first physical warning signs, reflecting deeper internal discord. If at this point the underlying psychoemotional and spiritual conflicts are not resolved, depending on the aforementioned cofactors, organic disease is the result. It is here the physician is generally called in and to this Bach writes: “The main reason for the failure of modern medicine is that it is dealing with results and not causes. . . . Disease will never be cured or eradicated by present materialistic methods, for the simple reason that disease in its origin is not material [but the] ultimate result produced in the body, the end product of deep and long-acting forces. . . .” Even the part affected gives some clue to underlying disturbances.

Bach writes:

‘For example,

Pride, which

is arro-

gance and rigidity of mind, will give rise to those diseases which produce rigidity and stiffness of the body. Pain is the result of cruelty, whereby the patient learns through personal suffering not to inflict it upon others, either from a physical or from a mental standpoint . . . should there be a persistence in refusing to see truth when the opportunity has been given, short-sightedness and impairment of vision and hearing are the natural consequence. . . . “Moreover, the very part of the body affected is no accident,

but is in accordance with the law of cause and effect, and again will be a guide to help us. For example, the heart, the fountain

of life and hence of love, is attacked when especially the love side of the nature towards humanity is not developed or is wrongly used . . .* If you suffer from asthma, or difficulty in

breathing, you are in some way stifling another personality; or from lack of courage to do right, smothering yourself... .? Such must follow as the law lays down,’’7° Though other methods for reestablishing internal harmony

have been used for millennia, many of them require adherence to strict codes of behavior and practice. Dr. Bach was to discover a simpler way.

4 / THE BACH REMEDIES

In his search for an effective treatment modality, Bach’s con-

cern with the indiscriminate use and side effects of most chemical drugs led him to investigate natural substances that would be both safe and effective. Considering the flowers and flowering heads to be the highest expression of the plant, Bach believed that, for his purposes, the optimal healing value resided there, and he confined his research and study primarily to those parts. Following this extensive research, Bach discovered that certain species of wild flowers, when picked at a certain time in

their blooming cycle and prepared homeopathically following a simple but unique preparation procedure he developed, maximized the healing qualities of that plant. Unlike other herbal preparations, this procedure released properties not generally available when picked and prepared in the normal way. Each plant he chose was carefully researched and tested. Plants producing side effects were quickly discarded. Bach succeeded in discovering 38 flowering plants, trees and special waters which he found to contain the particular properties he had been searching for. Resultant preparations were used not for the physical complaints of patients, but for their underlying emotional and psychological stress.

Following clinical testing, Bach and his colleagues found that these preparations had a profound effect in balancing the pri-

mary negative emotional and psychological states he had originally categorized.

These

states

include

such

things as fear,

anxiety, insecurity, jealousy, shyness, poor self-image, anger and resentment.

Though these preparations have been used extensively over the past 50 years by physicians worldwide, primarily in Great Britain and Europe, it wasn’t until January 1981 that they were

officially recognized in the United States as over-the-counter

homeopathic remedies. The Bach Remedies differ in many ways from standard pharthacological drugs in their structural makeup, scope of application and effectiveness. Though made from flowering plants, THE BACH REMEDIES / 5

the process by which these remedies are prepared reduces macropharmacological content, leaving behind a microstructure of molecules with a possible alteration of their electromagnetic field.

Though measuring techniques do exist,"’ Bach Remedies as

well as other homeopathic preparations are not often measured during standard pharmacological assessment. Despite this, Bach Remedies have consistently been found effective in both clini-

cal and nonclinical use.’

|

Additionally, the economic ramifications and reduced environmental impact of these medicines are staggering. Often it takes considerable amounts of raw material to produce limited supplies of costly pharmaceutical drugs. Compare this with the use of a handful of flowers, a renewable resource, which has,

when properly prepared, the potential for producing enough preparation to treat a sizable group of people over an extended period of time. For these

and other reasons,

the Bach Remedies,

among

others, are on the leading edge of a new direction in medicine. This direction is away from strong pharmaceutical agents, which may cause side effects and create dependency, towards more natural, nonhabit-forming preparations which can gently assist the body in accessing its own internal healing resources. Though Bach Remedies are chosen according to emotional and psychological states, they are said to ultimately assist in restoring balance on a deeper level, thereby indirectly stabilizing the specific emotional and psychological state one is working with. This appears to be accomplished by the triggering of mechanisms which, in turn, affect the mobilization of internal

healing processes. These processes, once activated, have been known to positively affect those physical difficulties which are complicated by and have strong emotional components as their underlying cause.

6 / THE BACH REMEDIES

Though used extensively by the general public, professional use of the Bach Remedies has grown significantly in the past few years in the United States and abroad. Dr.

Alec

Forbes,

a former

member

of the World

Health

Organization’s Expert Advisory Panel on Traditional Medicine, and Medical Director of the Bristol Cancer Help Centre in Bristol, England, has used the Bach Remedies for over twenty

years. Dr. Forbes states that, in addition to helping him personally through many family crises, he has taken hundreds of patients off antidepressants, sedatives and tranquilizers through the use of the remedies. “I use the Bach Remedies regularly at the Cancer Help Centre and find them to be most helpful in alleviating the emotional and psychological stress many of my cancer patients experience,” he explains. Dr. J. Herbert Fill, a psychiatrist and former New York City Commissioner of Mental Health, uses the Bach Remedies when

dealing with his patients’ problems. “I deal with emotional problems as well as physical ones,’” Dr. Fill states. “When treating these difficulties, I use the Bach Remedies almost exclusively instead of tranquilizers and psychotropics, and generally get good results. These remedies work differently than tranquilizers. If you take Valium, for example, you feel relaxed within 15 to 20 minutes. This will last about 6 to 8 hours, then you're back where you started: depressed, anxious and upset. Conversely, when the correct Bach Remedies are chosen and taken long enough, I’ve observed them to have a profound and long-lasting affect, free from side effects. Some of these remedies work more quickly than others. Depending on the individual, some take weeks, others months, to be effective. In my observations, these remedies appear to work on a much deeper level, apparently assisting the individual in resolving deeprooted conflict, as opposed to palliation of the symptoms. “One 47-year-old patient, for example, had a depression for 30 years, marked by hopelessness, despondency and inability to make decisions. He had been given everything to get rid of his depression—antidepressants, psychotherapy—you name it, THE BACH REMEDIES / 7

he tried it. Yet he remained depressed. I gave this patient specific Bach Remedies for his depression and associated emotional difficulties. After one week the depression lifted significantly. Though marked improvement had taken place; as a precaution, I instructed the patient to continue taking the remedies for six months. A year after he completed his treatment the depression had not returned, and appears to have permanently been resolved.” : Another example of Dr. Fill’s work with the Bach Remedies was a patient who is an actress. “She was playing off-off Broadway, doing just so-so,” states Fill. ‘In addition to having been nervous and neurotic in general, the patient was troubled

by stage fright and fear. However, after she began taking the Bach Remedies I prescribed for her, she became a more confident person. Her fears disappeared, and she began to perform better on stage, eventually achieving notable success as an actress.

The

combination

used

was

Mimulus,

for her fears

associated with performing; Larch, for her lack of self-confidence; Rock Rose, for the panic she experienced on stage; and Agrimony, for hiding behind a facade of cheerfulness, even when

upset. These allowing her In addition and attitudes

remedies had unlocked her inner creative self, to access her real potential.” to helping resolve unproductive negative feelings that often stand in the way of success and happi-

ness, the Bach Remedies, as a contributing cofactor, may assist

in the alleviation of emotionally based physical problems as well. “Bach Remedies can make you healthier,” states Dr. Abram Ber, a general practitioner in private practice in Phoenix, Arizona. “By affecting underlying mental and emotional stress, Bach Remedies work at the root cause of the problem, where the whole disease process begins. I have used these remedies with thousands of patients over the past eleven years. If you spent a day in my office,” continues Dr. Ber, ‘““you would see there is no one whose life they don’t touch. ‘ “Though Bach Remedies, in addition to other appropriate treatment, may help alleviate emotionally based physical problems,” adds Dr. Ber, “the remedies are not prescribed directly for them. Instead, we look to find a Bach Remedy corresponding to the mental state which led to the problem. Approaching things in this way ensures that underlying emotional patterns which created the problem to begin with are not repeated. Obviously, this makes for a more rapid and complete recovery

in stabilizing the condition. Each person however is different; 8 / THE BACH REMEDIES

you rarely use the same remedy or combination of remedies with any two people, even if they display similar physical conditions. “For example, I had a patient with long-standing, chronic low back pain. This patient by nature was angry and resentful. For years he had been through endless therapy for this condition, with few results.

So instead

of treating only the back

pain, we gave him remedies for his anger and resentment. It took many months, but as his negative attitudes positively improved,

his back condition improved

as well. Once

stabi-

lized, it was permanent.”

In addition to their use among medical doctors and other

health

care

professionals,

the Bach

Remedies

combine

well

with chiropractic philosophy and treatment. Among members of the profession who have used the Bach Remedies,

it has

often been reported that the overall affect in cases calling for both approaches has been reported greater and more permanent acting than either approach used alone. Chiropractic recognizes the body’s innate ability to heal itself once the obstacles to health are removed. Realigning bone misalignments and unblocking nerve root impingement allow the nervous system to normalize, thereby reestablishing the homeostatic balance that permits physical health to return. The Bach Remedies work on similar principles but address the more fundamental stress-producing factors which predispose osseous misalignments. Dr. George Goodheart, a chiropractic physician well known for his pioneering work in the field of applied kinesiology, states: “Dr. Bach developed a gentle but highly effective system of remedies that I have used over the past number of years with remarkable success. I have found them to alleviate a wide range of emotional problems and emotionally based physical problems. I have seen them dispel worry, anxiety and negative attitudes, very often in a surprisingly short period of time, instilling a more positive attitude toward'recovery.”"" California, Dr. Barbara Dorf, a chiropractor in Culver City,

c practice began using the Bach Remedies as part of her holisti in 1982.

Since then, Dr. Dorf states,

she has become

more

nal conscious of the role that stress and unresolved emotio dysl skeleta lar muscu and e diseas of issues play in the cause have seen function. “From the beginning of my practice, Ihad deeper knew I countless patients for physical problems , I realemotional and psychological implications. Subsequentlybe estabfully cannot ent treatm of ized that an effective course THE BACH REMEDIES / 9

lished if the patient is compartmentalized and therapy is restricted only to physical conditions,” she says. “Some years ago, a colleague introduced me to the Bach Remedies. After careful observation of his use of these remedies, I decided to try them on myself. Their affect was profound, yet subtle and gentle. Certain emotional issues I had been struggling with for years resolved themselves totally within two weeks after I began using the remedies. No other concurrent therapy or substances were used, nor had my daily routine changed in any way. I attributed this affect solely to having used the Bach Remedies. This was the missing link I had been searching for in my chiropractic works,” she states. “Recently,” wrote Dr. Dorf, “a 35-year-old, athletically-built

male came into my office bent over sideways in excruciating pain caused by acute thoraco-lumbar myospasm. | had seen this problem many times before, and, after doing a comprehensive examination and ruling out anything more serious, I questioned him about any emotional upset prior to the onset of the spasm. He explained to me that he had lost both his job and his personal relationship a few days prior to the back pain. I determined that he needed the following Bach Remedies: Walnut, to help stabilize and center him through the transition following the loss of the job and his relationship; Mimulus, for alleviating the specific fears he expressed to me over these

incidents; Pine, for feeling it was all his fault and that he should have done better on his job and in the relationship; Willow, for his resentment and his feeling that what happened was unjust; and Rescue Remedy, to help calm him during the acute phases of adjusting to these traumas. Remarkably, after two days both his emotional and physical condition signifi-

cantly improved.”'°

As examples, Dr. Ber’s and Dr. Dorf’s cases illustrate two important points: That addressing underlying psychoemotional factors can significantly affect physical conditions predisposed by those factors; and though, as in these two cases, similar physical problems may exist, very different psychoemotional factors may be at the root. “I have also found there to be strong emotional releases, as a result of opening blocks following the body work I do. These underlying emotions must be dealt with as they come up. The remedies are quite effective in stabilizing these as well,” Dr. Dorf continues. ‘After several years in clinical practice, I have come to realize that optimal health is much more than the absence of pain, and

10 / THE BACH REMEDIES

my practice has evolved into one focusing on stress management and health optimization. Using these remedies in the way I do helps me to know my patients better, helps them to open up more and improves the doctor-patient relationship. Even more importantly, the experience enhances the patients understanding of their own healing process, thereby motivating them to participate in and take more responsibility for their own health,” Dr. Dorf concludes.

Out of thousands of case studies, some of the most striking and dramatic reports have been those involving the use of Bach Remedies and Rescue Remedy (a combination of five of the Bach Remedies, used for acute stressful situations), with animals. In his book, Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health

for Dogs and Cats, noted California veterinarian Richard Pitcairn recommends the Bach Remedies and Rescue Remedy for animals, used along with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, acupressure, external heart-massage and other modalities for vari-

ous conditions. Other cases have been documented in a recently released book entitled, Flowers to the Rescue by researcher Gregory Vlamis. Mr. Vlamis is also in the process of compiling an entire volume (in press), which will contain hundreds of case reports from veterinarians and others, on their use of Bach

Remedies with animals. Although the exact way in which the Bach Remedies and Rescue Remedy work is not yet fully known, the successful and sometimes dramatic results among veterinarians and others working with animals strongly indicates that their effectiveness is not based on the belief of the patient.

In 1979 researcher Michael Weisglas, Ph.D., of the California

Institute of Asian Studies (now the California Institute of Integral Studies), conducted a controlled, double-blind study on the use of the Bach Remedies. Thirty-one subjects, average age 27, were recruited from the San Francisco Bay Area. Measures

involving the Adjective Check List, developed by Harrison Gough, The Luscher Eight Color Test, and post-experimental

questionnaires were taken initially, after three weeks, and at the

THE BACH REMEDIES / 11

end of six weeks. Both subjects and administrators were unaware of which group received what treatment. A placebo group; and two treatment groups, which received different amounts of remedies, were used.

Results of the study indicated that Bach Remedies can significantly deepen self-understanding, and self-acceptance, increase humor and enhance creativity and being sexuality. Being Sexuality is noted by researchers to be an evolutionary and healthward shift, where mutual hostilityis transformed into relationships characterized by accepting and loving attitudes. From these findings it was concluded that the Bach Remedies ‘‘operate independently of the belief of the user.” It was also noted that the number of remedies taken may additionally have an affect on the outcome; and further suggested the use of seven remedies or more (other than in crises interven-

tion)* may have a decreasing, as opposed to increasing, affect

on well-being.’

In a clinical study recently conducted in New York City, Dr. John Bolling, a specialist in behavioral and drug abuse problems, and a former assistant professor and Chief Resident in Psychiatry at New York University’s Bellevue Medical Center, gave his patients preparations of the Bach Remedies. Forty patients participated in the study for a three- to six-month period. Of the group given Bach Remedies, 80 percent ‘showed significant improvement.” Though other modalities—for example meditation and hypnosis—were simultaneously used, Dr. Bolling attributed a large part of his patients’ improvements to their use of the flower remedies. However, the most impressive part of the study, states Dr. Bolling, “was the dramatic improvement shown, in the overcoming of blocked emotional

patterns by twenty percent of this group, who prior to the

study had been deemed resistant to any form of treatment. Clearly the Bach Remedies were the primary factor here,” continues Dr. Bolling. ‘In addition to the marked improvement in their emotional state, these patients are now more open and receptive to other treatment modalities which had not been effective before.” One particularly difficult case involved a woman in her early

30s suffering from poor self-image, lack of confidence and deep depression. She regularly considered taking her life, and all of Dr. Bolling’s formal therapies failed to give her relief. How*Extensive professional use has shown that seven to nine remedies can be used successfuly, when called for, during acute phases of crises intervention.

12 / THE BACH REMEDIES

ever, one week after taking a mixture of several Bach Remedies, “She dramatically improved,” states Bolling. “She lost her suicidal urges and became more outgoing and confident.”

Rescue Remedy, the most well known of the Bach Remedies,

was researched and developed by Dr. Bach in the early 1930s. It contains five of the 38 Bach Remedies and is the only combination formula in the Bach Remedy system. Rescue Remedy has been used successfully for over 50 years by many prominent physicians and other health-care professionals. Many of these physicians report Rescue Remedy to have .a positive calming and stabilizing effect in acute emergency situations,* including accidents, bereavement, hysteria and times of fright. Even minor, everyday anxiety, such as the stress arising from taking exams, making speeches or going on job interviews, is reportedly helped with Rescue Remedy. Mary Catherine Kelly, an office administrator in New York City, describes her introduction to the Bach Remedies through the use of Rescue Remedy: “Following severe personal problems, I found myself experiencing acute anxiety attacks nearly everyday,” she says. “This no doubt was aggravated by my quitting smoking. To control

the anxiety, I started taking Valium and other tranquilizers on and off for a year. Also, for the two previous years I’d had dizzy spells that no doctor could find the cause of. The day I took my first dose of Rescue Remedy was the last day I needed a tranquilizer. As I continued to take the Rescue Remedy, my anxiety attacks slowly abated, then disappeared, as completely as did my dizzy spells.” “Despite its diverse application, Rescue Remedy does not take the place of emergency medical treatment. In such circumstances proper medical attention should be sought immediately. However, while it does not replace emergency treatment, Rescue Remedy has been reported helpful in stabilizing emotions such as fear, and panic, which often accompany traumatic situations.

THE BACH REMEDIES / 13

Rescue Remedy’s diverse application is also illustrated in the following report of a runner from Jamaica, New York. She says: “I am a member of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team. After sixteen miles into a marathon,

I usually become

tired,

irritable and lightheaded. In my squirt bottle I carry a dilution of Rescue Remedy and water, which I usually drink during the last ten miles. It [helps maintain my] energy and alleviates mental weariness and depression. “While running, I apply the Rescue Remedy cream to my knees to alleviate recurring pain, and also rub it on my calf muscles and hamstrings, to relieve the muscle tightness I expe-

rience during the course of the race.”

Rescue Remedy has also been extremely effective with children. Dr. G. S. Khalsa, a family practice physician in Lathrup Village, Michigan, reports: “I find Rescue Remedy to be very useful in calming children having temper tantrums. It also alleviates their apprehension when they have to get shots. Additionally, I use it with good results for the fears and anxie-

ties that patients experience in my office.””**

In addition to a liquid concentrate, Rescue Remedy also comes in a homeopathic cream base. This can be useful applied to bruises, bumps, sprains, insect bites and minor burns and

cuts. Using Rescue Remedy liquid orally in conjunction with applying the cream has been shown to ease the emotional upset associated with the aforementioned conditions. The applied cream can also be used for tension headaches, and in reducing acute muscle tension and stiffness.

In his book, The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies, Dr. Bach carefully outlines and describes, in easy-to-understand terms, the various emotional and psychological states and personality traits for which the remedies are used. These descriptions, though stated in simple terms, coincide with, and reveal a more complex assessment of, underlying discordant patterns. To assist in the selection of Bach Remedies, a self-help questionnaire has been provided on the following pages. Read and 14 / THE BACH REMEDIES

answer each question carefully. After completing the questionnaire, count only the YES answers in each section. If there are two or more, that remedy is indicated. Up to six remedies may be combined and taken at one time. The fewer remedies taken the better; the ideal being the single remedy. This will allow for an easier integration and adjustment of internal processes.

Once chosen, and after obtaining the remedies in their liquid

concentrate form, they may be taken in the following manner. Acute Stress. For immediate stressful situations, passing negative moods or states of mind, 2 to 4 drops may be taken directly from the concentrate bottle under the tongue* (holding a moment before swallowing); or placed in a % glass of juice or water and sipped at intervals when needed, until improvement

is shown.

Long-term Stress. Add 2 to 4 drops from each concentrate into a one-ounce dropper bottle filled with spring water (avoid distilled). A teaspoon of at least 70-proof Brandy, other rectified spirits, or, if alcohol-sensitive, apple cider vinegar may be added as a preservative. Four drops are taken under the tongue on rising, between meals during the day and before bed. *NOTE: As all Bach Remedy concentrates are preserved with a percentage of alcohol,

alcohol-sensitive

persons

should

be informed

of this fact. For the

alcohol-sensitive, alternative methods of application include: diluting concentrate in glass of juice or water; rubbing the remedy concentrates on soft tissue areas of the body, such as behind the ears, the wrists, crook of the elbows,

knees or on the temples. The remedies can also be put in a small atomizer and sprayed onto or around a person. Or when called for, the remedies can be sprayed into an enclosed room or space.

THE BACH REMEDIES / 21

To mula heat from

maximize shelf life, keep all remedies, including the forbottle, tightly sealed, out of direct sunlight, away from and out of airport X-ray equipment. Keep dropper tip touching the mouth or any other surface.

Retrospective Affect. Unlike most pharmacological drugs, the Bach Remedies have a subtle affect, gently resolving underlying emotional stress by triggering mechanisms which serve to mobilize the body’s own internal healing processes. Because resolution of these emotional disturbances: takes place below the conscious level of awareness, one is not always cognizant of when and where a change has taken place. More often, a person will ‘‘not have a sense” of having had the problem, as if it never existed. However, in examining prior difficulties in retrospect, one is able to determine where attitudes have changed or positively resolved themselves. Once difficulties have been resolved, the use of the remedy or remedies should be discontinued. Self-Diminishing Affect. Unlike most chemical drugs, which can be suppressive and create dependency, the Bach Remedies may be classified as having a self-diminishing affect. As we move closer to balance (toward conflict resolution), both the

need for and the effectiveness of the remedy diminishes. Once achieved, the remedy is no longer needed or effective. Peeling Affect. Often one will experience a “peeling” affect, where one or more emotional difficulties are resolved and other underlying emotions emerge. In these cases the questionnaire may be reread and a new mixture chosen.

Length of Time. While using the remedies, it is not uncommon for problems to be confronted and worked out during the sleep state in dreams, in quiet moments of meditation, or in interac-

tions with others. Remedies are taken until one feels a resolution or lifting of the negative emotional state, or the stabilizing of overreactive personality traits. 22 | THE BACH REMEDIES

Generally speaking, 75 to 85 percent of those using these remedies may resolve their difficulties within one to twelve

weeks. Some, however, take longer. Once positive changes occur and difficulties resolved, the remedy/s should be discon-

tinued. Further to this Bach writes: “The longer one strives to correct the fault which lies behind the illness, the longer will

the potency [affect] last.””!°

Though some may consider the remedies to be an end in themselves, shifting dependent behavior from one perceived answer

to another, it should be emphasized that all healing comes from within. Properly considered, then, the remedies are no

more than catalysts to assist in mobilizing one’s own internal healing resources. Once having reawakened internal pathways to self-healing, eventually, it becomes possible to move past the need for the remedies. This is in some way related to associative processes, whereby

the event,

circumstance

or emotional

difficulty, on

arising, serves to trigger the same stabilizing mechanisms the remedies once did. Further, it is important to awaken one’s own conscious aware-

ness and responsibility in both attaining and maintaining homeostasis. This combined with the overcoming of negative predisposing factors, the realization of their cause, and a commitment to applying opposing positive virtues, is the ultimate goal of true healing. Response/Reactions.* Though rare, occasionally, some may experience a minor response/reaction,

such as a rash, mild diar-

rhea, or an accentuating of the negative emotion for which they are taking a remedy. Since the Bach Remedies are nontoxic in and of themselves, these response/reactions may be part of the natural process of confronting feelings. In some cases this can also be brought on by a person’s unconscious resistance to the process of change. Either way, at this point the associated remedy should be discontinued, and a physician, or counselor knowledgeable in

this area be contacted.

*Persistent conditions, and those conditions requiring medical attention should be referred to a physician of one’s choosing, immediately.

THE BACH REMEDIES / 23

Because of the extensive use and popularity of the Bach Remedies and Rescue Remedy, similar products appeared on the market. The following will help you distinguish the authentic Bach Remedies and Rescue Remedy from other products and clear up some of the misconceptions surrounding the differences. The name Rescue Remedy is a federally registered trademark, as are Bach Remedies, with the latter applying to 38 specific preparations and the unique philosophy and system of their use. All 38 remedies comprising the Bach Remedy system are officially recognized as over-the-counter homeopathic medicines and are listed in the Supplement to the Eighth Edition of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States. The Bach Remedies and Rescue Remedy are prepared only at the Bach Centre, England, where to this day the same wildflower locations originally discovered by Dr. Bach are still used. Some of these newly released products are not made from real flowers at all, but are prepared by radionic methods or other ways said to duplicate or enhance the “vibration” of real flowers. Some of these other products are made from real flowers, but not from the species used in Bach Remedies.

In addition, there are products being sold in stores that are actually unauthorized dilutions of the authentic Bach Remedies and Rescue Remedy, which renders them adulterated and misbranded drugs. Unfortunately, some of the literature and occasionally the labeling of these products makes reference to Dr. Bach’s name. This tends to create the false impression that they are genuine Bach Remedies or Rescue Remedy. They are not. All authentic Bach Remedies, including Rescue Remedy liquid, come bottled in concentrate form. Rescue Remedy is also

available in cream form. Officially recognized as over-the-counter

homeopathic medicines, the authentic Bach Remedies are governed by strict FDA and homeopathic labeling and quality control laws. State and federal regulations prohibit the unauthorized diluting or rebottling of the Bach Remedies by anyone other than the end user. While unauthorized dilutions selling in stores may appear 24 / THE BACH REMEDIES

larger than authentic Bach Remedy concentrates, one ten-milliliter (one-third ounce) bottle of Bach Remedy concentrate may produce as many as 70 bottles of these watered-down products. Additionally, these unauthorized products composed mostly of water, have a limited shelf life wind up costing consumers substantially more than if they purchased authentic Bach Remedy concentrates directly.

Ultimately, what distinguishes the real Bach Remedies, including Rescue Remedy, from similar products is more than just the name Bach. The Bach Remedies and Rescue Remedy have been used worldwide for over 50 years by countless numbers of physicians, health care professionals and the general public; and have consistently proven themselves safe, gentle and effective. To ensure you are getting the genuine Bach Remedies or Rescue Remedy, be absolutely certain they are in their original liquid concentrate form.
