Imagine All The Places You Can Tuck ICOM’s Remotable IC-280. (Think small.) The IC-280 2 meter mobile comes as one radio to be mounted in the normal manner: but, as an option, the diminutive front one third of the radio detaches and mounts by its optional bracket, while the main body tucks neatly away out of sight. Now you can mount your 2 meter radio in pint-sized places that seemed far too cramped before. Measuring only 2'/«"h x 7"wx3fi"d, the bantam-sized microprocessor control head fits easily Into the dash, console or glove box of even the most compact vehicle. Or if those places are already taken by the rest of your “mobile shack," the IC-280 head squeezes Into leftover nitches under the dash, overhead, under the seat or even on the steering column. But don't be misled by the petite size of this subdivided radio: the IC-280 is Jam packed with the latest state of the art engineering and conveni¬ ence features. No scaled down technology here I

With the microprocessor in the detachable control head, your IC-280 can store three frequencies of your choice plus the dial, which allows you to select from four frequencies with the front panel switch without taking your eyes off the road. These frequencies are retained in the IC-280’s memory for as long as power is applied to the radio, even when power is turned off at the front panel switch. And if power is completely removed from the radio the ±600 KHz splits are still main¬ tained! The IC-280 works freauencies in excess of the 2 meter band with lCOM's outstanding single-knob tuning, so you can listen around the entire band without fooling with three tuning knobs. With steps of 15 KC or 5 KC, the IC-280 puts rapid and easy frequency change at your single fingertip and instantly displays bright, easy to read LtD’s. Available Option*: • Touch lone pad/mlcrophone combination, which fils the mlc plug on tlm radio face with absolutely no modification (Fils nil ICOM 4-pin mlc radios.) • 15' unassembled cable kit lor longdistance remote mounting of the detachable control head

FOREWORD

During the past decade, the growth of the fm mode of communica¬ tions has been phenomenal. And, this phenomenom has been recorded in the pages ol The ARRL Repeater Directory. The first edition, published in the summer of 1971, contained 300 repeater listings. Each succeeding edition grew by approximately 25% and today, this, the tenth edition, contains over 5000 listings. The goal of this directory is to help the mobile ham traveling in urbanized America to find local repeaters that he may be able to use. This edition of the directory has been completely revised with that in mind. All the mobile ham needs to know is the name of the metropolitan area he is near, and the directory will provide him with a list of accessi¬ ble repeaters. Of course, the United States and Canada are not com¬ pletely urbanized and there are provisions in the directory to find repeaters outside of metropolitan areas. The directory also contains information about repeater operating prac¬ tices, frequency coordination, band plans and the ARRL VHF Repeater Advisory Committee. So, whether you are using a crystallized handheld or a completely synthesized transceiver, The ARRL Repeater Directory will provide you with the information you need to communicate in the world of fm repeaters. REPEATER OPERATING PRACTICES 1) Monitor the repeater to become lamiliar with any peculiarities in its operation. 2) To initiate a contact simply indicate that you are on frequency. Various geographical areas have different practices on making yourself heard, but, generally, "This is W1XZ monitoring" will suffice. One prac¬ tice that is looked upon with disfavor universally is calling a long CQ on a repeater. 3) Identify legally; you must transmit your callsign at the beginning and end of each contact and every ten minutes in between. At the end you must also identify the station you were in QSO with. It is illegal to key a repeater without identification. 4) Pause between transmissions. This allows other hams to use the repeater (someone may have an emergency). On most repeaters a pause is necessary to reset the timer. 5) Keep transmissions short and thoughtful. Your monologue may pre¬ vent someone with an emergency from using the repeater. If your monologue is long enough, you may time out the repeater. Your transmissions are being heard by many listeners including non-hams with "public service band" monitors; don't give a bad impression of our hobby. 6) Use simplex whenever possible. If you can complete your QSO on a direct frequency, there is no need to tie up the repeater and prevent others from using it. 7) Use the minimum amount of power necessary to maintain com¬ munications. This FCC regulation minimizes the possibility of accessing distant repeaters on the same frequency. 8) Don’t break into a contact unless you have something to add. Inter¬ rupting is no more polite on the air than it is in person. 9) Repeaters are intended to facilitate mobile hams. During the com¬ muter rush hours, base stations should relinquish the repeater to mobile stations; some repeater groups have rules that specifically address this practice. 10) Many repeaters are equipped with autopatch facilities which, when properly accessed, connect the repeater to the telephone system to pro¬ vide a public service. The FCC forbids using an autopatch for anything that could be construed as business communications. Nor should an auiopatch be used to avoid a toll call. Do not use an autopatch where regular telephone service is available. Abuses of autopatch privileges may lead to their loss. 11) All repeaters are assembled and maintained at considerable ex¬ pense and inconvenience. Usually an individual or a group is responsible and it behooves those who are regular users of a repeater to support the efforts of keeping the repeater on the air.
