Thurueysen has pointed out {Irische Helden-und Konigsage, 285) that the text which has come dowu to us appears to contain two stories about Fráech which have been roughly joined together. The title tits only the final episode, in which Fráech aj»]»ears as husband and father, whereas the whole of the hrst ])ait is an account of the wooing of Findal)air. The story is well told and has some charming passages, the description of the approaching visitors, Fráech's meeting with Findabair at the river, and reinscéla

swimming across the pool with the The incident of the ring is a commonplace of folklore. The green-clad women, who carry away the hero into a fairy-mound, appear in the same way in Tain Bo Gúailnge, and may be a survival of the old cult of the mat res. The tradition is preserved in Scotland in the form of a ballad whicJi is in the Book of the Dean of Lismore (MacLauchlan, p. 30 and Cameron the picture of his berries.

Strachan, Particle Ro-, 79, ]-egarded this story as older than Táiu Bo Ciiuihtf/c, and Polvorny (ZCP 13, 120) has called attention to verbal forms in the text wliich would ])()int to a date as far l)a(di as the Sth century.
