INTRODUCTION

The education system in the UK is divided into four main parts: primary education, secondary education, further education and higher education. Children in the UK have to legally get primary and secondary education which runs from about 5 until the student is 16. Primary education begins in the UK at 5 and continues till 11, comprising key stages one and two under the UK educational system. At age from 11 to 16, students enter secondary school for key stages three and four and to start their move towards taking the GCSE's. Primary and secondary education is mandatory in the UK; after age 16, education is optional. Once a student finishes secondary education they have the option to extend into further education to take their A-Levels, GNVQ's, BTEC's or other such qualifications. UK students planning to go to college or university must complete further education. [https://www.internationalstudent.com/study_uk/education_system/]

Read the text and say what GCSE means and what subjects it includes. Compare it with the Russian system of education and say what subjects our students take. Secondary education in the UK normally starts for most students at the age of 11 years old. Though not common, in some parts of the UK there are middle schools which run up to 12 or 13 years old. For international students coming into the UK for secondary education, it is common to either enter at the age of 11 or wait until the age of 13 and have one year in the school before starting the two-year GCSE program which will run from 14 to 16 years old. From the age of 11-14, students will study a broad range of subjects such as Music, Maths, Sciences, English, etc. When you reach 14, you generally enter into your first year of a 2 year process known as your GCSE (or SCE for those who are in Scotland). GCSE's are a set of exams that test your knowledge and skill. Most schools follow the same method when it comes to GCSE's and you will take the following core subjects: English; Maths; Sciences (either combined or separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics). Students typically then select an additional 4 or 5 subjects in which to take GCSE's, and they can be subjects like French, German, Business Studies, Design and Technology, Music, Sports Science, Geography, History and many other options. – 32 –

At state schools students typically take 5 to 10 GCSE's, depending on the student's ability and drive. For independent schools, which are usually a lot more results driven, it is not uncommon for students to take as many as 11 or 12, focusing more on academic subjects compared to the arts subjects. GCSE's take a total of 2 years and mark the end of compulsory education for students in the UK. Once they have completed their GCSE's students then have the choice to either move into further education (with a view to higher education) or can leave school and look for work. 16. Prepare a list of points about the education in the UK that stays unknown to you. Answer them and make up a presentation revealing what you have learnt.

1.3. AFTER-WATCHING ACTIVITIES 1. Make up a dialogue between a Russian and an English student. The Russian student asks about British education, because he/she doesn’t know anything about it. The English student answers and asks the Russian student about Russian education. 2. Comment on the following. – Distant learning is considered by many a convenient and promising form of education. However, its opponents say that it is no match for personal intellectual contact and development. – The idea of going overseas for university study seems an exciting prospect for many people. However, some young people think it is better to stay home because of the difficulties a student inevitable encounters living and studying in a different culture.

INTRODUCTION Higher education, any of various types of education is given in postsecondary institutions of learning and usually afford, at the end of a course of study, a named degree, diploma, or certificate of higher studies. Higher-educational institutions include not only universities and colleges but also various professional schools that provide preparation in such fields as law, theology, medicine, business, music, and art. Higher education also includes teacher-training schools, junior colleges, and institutes of technology. The basic entrance requirement for most higher-educational institutions is the completion of secondary education, and the usual entrance age is about 18. The system of higher education had its origin in Europe in the Middle Ages, when the first universities were established. In modern times the nature of higher education around the world has been largely determined by the models established in influential countries such as France, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States. Students were not allowed to play games, to sing or to dance and all the lessons were in Latin!  Until the late 19th century, only men were allowed to be students at the two universities.  Both Oxford and Cambridge students refer to each other as "the other place". INTRODUCTION

The term "tween" is a combination of words 'between' and 'teenager,' the idea being that the kids are in between. This age group consists of kids who no longer want to be called a child, but aren't old enough to be considered teenagers. While the ages of tweens vary from source to source, they are generally defined as kids ages 8 to 14. The term "teen" is a person who falls within the ages of thirteen to nineteen years old. The word "teenager" is another word for an adolescent. When a teenager turns 20, they are no longer a teenager because they are no longer in that developmental stage.

3. Suggest the theme and the purpose of the video. N.B. A theme is an idea that is repeated throughout a text or collection of texts. For example, "the importance of family in shaping identity" is a theme that can be found throughout literature. We often define purpose as "what the author is trying to say" – as if an author is never quite capable of saying what he or she means. The work is best understood as a joint enterprise between author and reader. Authors can't communicate properly by themselves. They need readers to understand them. An author's purpose – or even the main idea – is not always obvious and is often open to interpretation. An author is expected to do his or her best to construct text in a way that readers will understand, and except in the case of certain kinds of mystery novels, we trust that an author will not try to trick us.

INTRODUCTION

England is a country with a long and interesting past. History can be found at every turn, with old castles dotting the country side, colleges with histories dating back to the Middle Ages, ancient Roman sites, and century's old Royal Palaces which are still in use today. But England is more than just its history, with vibrant cities, great cultural institutions, and fun things to see and do. At the heart of England lies the city of London, home to the Royal Family and Parliament. The historic streets and monuments are what most people come to see but there are plenty of modern day sights worth visiting as well. The primary tourist attractions consist of the most well known sights; Big Ben and the Parliament Buildings, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London, to name just a few. Those with an interest in art or history can spend days wandering through such places as the famous British Museum, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. All of these are world renowned institutions containing some of the finest collections in England. For a little excitement and some great views, the London Eye stands as a modern day landmark on the city skyline.
