1979 1 January: China and the United States established diplomatic relations. 17 February: Chinese troops began fighting the Sino-Vietnamese War against Vietnam an the China-Vietnam border. February: 'New Spring Oil Painting Exhibition' (ffi~ill&) opened in the Water Pavilion in Zhongshan Park. March: A crackdown was launched against the Democracy Wall and Wei Jingsheng was arrested. 30 April: The State Council issued the 'Notice on Permitting Rehabilitation of Youth who Left Their Posts to Return to the City' (Im ~)i~~-@l:l/ixw~@l!iil¥fl'i.1lIS'giffi~). April: Unofficial publication Today organised its first outdoor poetry reading. They arranged a second outdoor poetry reading in October that same year. The April Photography Society held its first exhibition. 27 September: The first Stars Exhibition opened in a park on the east side of the National Art Museum of China. It was banned by public security forces on 29 September. September: The murals at Beijing Capital International Airport were officially unveiled.
