Discussion of pattern When direct and indirect clitics occur in the same construction with a verb, the indirect always precedes the direct, and both precede a conjugsted form of the verb (except in affirmative commands, see Unit 29), but {ollow an infinitive or /~do/ form (if these are t he only verb forms in the phrase, see Unit 29). Discussion of pattern

The pattern of the Spanish exclamatory phrases drilled ahoye is somewhat simpler tban that of the English equivalents: /ké/ appears with nouns and modifiers, and /k6mO/appears with verbs. Tbe difference between 'what a'1 before singular count nouos and 'what' before plural count nouns and mass noUDS ('What a manl', but 'what menl, what patriotisml') doesn't occur in Spanish, where the exclamatory modifier is an unvariable /ké/. These Spanish constructions also translate equivalent English expressions with 'some, such' (as 'Some man, such men, such patriotism'). In English, a noun in an exclamatory phrase can be modified by an adjective whicb precedes it; in the equivalent Spanish phrase the adjective normally follows (except expressions like /ké-grán-6mbre/) and usually is itself always modified by /más/ or /tán/. Thus:

In the second examples /ké/ , when followed by a strong-etressed vowel, mayor may not be stressed depending on the relative speed of pronunciation, the 'emotion' with which it is expressed, etc. In a normal, uncolored pronunciation, the first of two adjacent strong-stressed vowels tends to become weak-etressed when they occur in the same intonation phrase. Discussion of pattern One of the most conspicuous errors that an English speaking student of Spanish can make is to impose an English intonation pattern on Spanish leavetakings. There

are several English patterns, nearly aIl oí which are very inappropriate. A listing oí these patterns would inelude: /232 t, 232

The common pattern in Spanish, /121 ¡ /, exists in English as an abrupt, discourteous dismissal. It is thereíore likely to be avoided by an English-speaking student in íavor oí a familiar pattern that doesn't make an English speaker íeel so uncomfortable. In leavetakings as with other íeatures, appropriate patterns must be internalized. But when there is direct interíerence from similar contexts in the learner's langunge, special attention Lhould be given to correctly establish the important patterns oí the target language.
