Dr. Arne Brändström Born 26.7.1925 (Luleå, Sweden) – 7.6.2012 Studied at Uppsala university and got a Ph. D. in Organic Chemistry in 1954. He then worked in the Swedish pharmaceutical industry, first at Pharmacia AB (Uppsala), and from 1959 at Hässle AB (Mölndal), owned by Astra AB (later AstraZeneca). Besides, he was appointed "Docent" of Organic Chemistry at Göteborg University in 1962. As senior scientist at Hässle AB, he had much freedom in defining his projects. He contributed to the developed of successful drugs, like Alprenolol, and later Metoprolol, a beta-blocker against heart diseases and high blood pressure, which became a block-buster. He was a major inventor of Omeprazol, a block-buster medication for the treatment of peptic ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease. His research clarified its mechanism of action as inhibitor of the proton pump H-K-ATPase. He received the IVA (Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences) gold medal in 1988 and the Nauta award of the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC) in 1992. He received a doctor

honoris causa of Chalmers in 1990. As industrial chemist, Brändström remained interested in fundamental academic research. He oversaw doctoral theses while at Hässle AB. Besides medicinal chemistry, he was interested in analytical separation techniques and physico-chemical relationships. He performed pioneering research on ion-pair extraction. The 1974 book ”Preparative ion pair extraction: An introduction to theory and practice” was strongly influential within the developing research field of phase-transfer catalysis. Published by the Apotekarsocieteten in Sweden in 1974 (2nd edition in 1976), the work is not readily available, although it must have been distributed among researchers active in phase-transfer catalysis, who often refer to it in their publications. After retirement, Brändström moved to a rural area and became interested in botany and the local plant-life. After some years, he fell ill of a degenerative muscle disease that prevented him from joining excursions into nature, although he remained a fresh thinker. [Based on: K. Luthman, in Kungl.
