C. Ukiad hasei 1. Za podstawQ ukladu hasel w Indeksie przyjqto kolejnosc liter polskiego alfabetu. Litery c, ς, 1, ή, ó, s, ζ, ζ zaszeregowano po literach a, c, e, 1, η, o, s, ζ. Litery ä, ö, ü, ß zaszeregowano jako ae, oe, ue, ss. Pozostale litery ζ obcymi znakami diakrytycznymi potraktowano jak ich litery podstawowe. Litery alfabetu rosyjskiego podano w transliteracji tacinskiej. W przypadku identycznych hasel o zaszeregowaniu decyduje kolejnosc chronologiczna. 2. D. Hasta odsytaczowe i rózne formy nazwiska 1. Poniewaz materialy zebrane w PAB I, Suplemencie i PAB II byty zbierane i opracowywane sukcesywnie, moze siç zdarzyc, ze jedna i ta sama osoba wystçpuje pod róznymi haslami. Dotyczy to glównie osób zakonnych, kobiet zamçznych, ludzi nosz^cych podwójne nazwisko oraz znanych glównie pod pseudonimami lub przydomkami, wreszcie osób nosz^cych nazwiska ζ rodzajnikami, zrostami rodzajników i przyimków, stalymi przydawkami i przedrostkami. W tych przypadkach w ciqgu alfabetycznym umieszczono hasla odsytaczowe, kieruj^ce do hasla wlasciwego. W Indeksie starano siç wszystkie dane biograficzne dotyczqcc jednej i tej samej osoby zaszeregowac pod jednym haslem. 2. Poniewaz glównym celem Archiwum bylo podanie mozliwie pelnej informacji biograficznej o danej osobie, Indeks stara siç uwzglçdniac wszystkie rózne ortograficznie formy danego nazwiska oraz wersje niepolskie tak imion, jak i nazwisk. Funktion Der Polnische Biographische Index, 2. kumulierte und erweiterte Ausgabe (PIB) bietet eine alphabetisch geordnete Auflistung der ca. 280 300 biographischen Einträge, die auf den 1 208 Mikrofiches des Polnischen Biographischen Archivs (PAB I) und des Polnischen Biographischen Archivs. Neue Folge (PAB II) im Volltext verfilmt wurden. Für das Polnische Biographische Archiv (PAB I) inklusive seines Supplements wurden 302 der wichtigsten und repräsentativsten biographischen Nachschlagewerke ausgewertet, die vom 17. bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts erschienen sind. Die insgesamt ca. 980 Bände sind von außergewöhnlichem historischen Wert und waren ursprünglich auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise konzipiert, z.B. chronologisch oder alphabetisch sortiert, nach geographischen Gesichtspunkten geordnet oder in Form von Ephemeriden. Das Polnische Biographische Archiv. Neue Folge (PAB II) enthält 128 Werke (194 Bände), die zwischen 1949 und 1998 erschienen sind. Es erweitert so den Berichtszeitraum des PBA I bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts, ergänzt aber auch den neuesten Stand der biographischen Forschung zu Personen der früheren polnischen Geschichte. Insgesamt wurden 430 Quellen in ca. 1 185 Bänden ausgewertet und biographisches Informationsmaterial zu 143 710 Personen aus einem Berichtszeitraum vom 8. Jahrhundert bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts zusammengestellt. Der PIB liefert zusätzlich zum Namen jeder Person Angaben über deren Lebensdaten und berufliche Tätigkeiten sowie die Fundstelle im PAB I und/oder PAB II und die entsprechenden biographischen Quellen. Auf Grund dieser Konzeption erfüllt der Index vor allem zwei Funktionen: - Der PIB ist ein Register zum PAB I und PAB II. Seine komprimierte Form erleichtert den Gebrauch der Biographischen Archive und das Auffinden von Daten darin erheblich. - Gleichzeitig stellt der PIB ein eigenständig nutzbares Hilfsmittel für die biographische Recherche dar. Der Inhalt der Einträge ermöglicht eine sofortige Auswahl, die die anschließende Suche nach allen im PAB I und PAB II enthaltenen Personen erleichtert. Der PIB öffnet dem Benutzer den direkten Weg zu der biographischen Quelle, sowohl zum Originalwerk in Buchform als auch zur mikroverfilmten Version im PAB I und PAB II. Der K. G. Saur Verlag erteilt gerne Auskunft, welche Bibliothek eines bestimmten Landes bzw. einer bestimmten Region ein Exemplar des PAB I bzw. PAB II besitzt.)

Informationswert

Im PAB I und PAB II wurden eine große Anzahl schwer zugänglicher biographischer Quellen kumuliert. In Zusammenarbeit mit Bibliotheken in Polen und Deutschland war es möglich, einzigartiges biographisches Material auswerten zu können. Somit wird zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte der historisch-biographischen Information über Polen umfassendes geschichtliches Material in einem einzigen Werk herausgegeben. Darüber hinaus sind auch Biographien von im Ausland lebenden Polen enthalten, Biographien von in Polen lebenden Ausländern sowie Biographien von Personen, deren Wirken entscheidend mit Polen verbunden war. Der Informationswert des PAB I und PAB II wird durch die systematische Information des PIB noch erhöht.

Darüber hinaus bietet der PIB einen Überblick über alle politischen, kulturellen, wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Gruppen: - Staatsmänner - Juristen - Theologen - Schriftsteller - Maler - Musiker - Schauspieler - Naturwissenschaftler - Mediziner - Architekten - Bildhauer - Kaufleute - Politiker - Militärs

Ordnungskriterien

1. Die Ordnung der Einträge erfolgt zunächst alphabetisch. Die Umlaute ä,ö und ü werden wie ae, oe, und ue geordnet. Die Sortierung polnischer Buchstaben folgt dem polnischen Alphabet. Die Buchstaben 4, ς, c, ή, ó, 1, s, ζ und ζ werden nach den Buchstaben a, e, c, η, ο, 1, s und ζ sortiert. Buchstaben aus anderen Alphabeten wie ß, á und é bzw. è, wurden wie ss, a bzw. e sortiert. Kyrillische Buchstaben wurden nach der lateinischen Umschrift eingeordnet. Bei identischen Namen erfolgt die Sortierung chronologisch nach den Lebensdaten der Personen. Monogramme stehen vor vollständigen Namen. 2. Bei gleichen Namen lautet die Reihenfolge: a) persönlicher Name ohne Beiname b) persönlicher Name mit Beiname c) mehrere persönliche Namen ohne Beiname d) mehrere persönliche Namen mit Beiname e) Familienname ohne Beiname f) Familienname mit Beiname g) Familienname mit Vorname h) Doppelname mit Beiname i) Doppelname mit Vorname

D. Verweisungen und biographische Einheit 1. Bedingt durch die sukzessive Bearbeitungsweise im PAB I, seinem Supplement und PAB II kann ein und dieselbe Person unter verschiedenen Ansetzungen erscheinen. Dies trifft insbesondere zu auf Ordensleute, verheiratete Frauen, Personen mit Doppelnamen und unter Spitz- oder Decknamen (Pseudonymen) bekannte Personen, ferner auf Namen, die mit Präfixen (Präpositionen, Artikeln oder Verschmelzungen aus Präposition und Artikel) gebildet sind. Falls möglich, wurden in diesen Fällen Verweisungen ins laufende Alphabet eingefügt. Die Verweise wurden den gleichlautenden Namensvarianten vorangestellt. Es versteht sich von selbst, daß bei der Erstellung des PIB nach Möglichkeit alle biographischen Daten und Fundstellen zu einer Person zusammengeführt wurden. 2. Ein wesentliches Ziel der Archive war die Darbietung der möglichst vollständigen biographischen Einheit der enthaltenen Personen. Daher wurde nach Möglichkeit bei identischen Personen lautlich und orthographisch unterschiedliche Formen, wie auch nicht-polnische und polnische Namensformen, zusammengeführt. Verweisungen im PIB geben auch hier die nötigen Hilfen für das Auffinden der tatsächlichen Eintragungsstellen.

Der PIB nennt als Fundstelle das Archiv („I" für PAB I, „II" für PAB II), die Fichenummer, danach die Nummer des Feldes auf dem Mikrofiche. Biographische Einträge aus den Supplement-Fiches werden durch ein „S" vor der Fichenummer gekennzeichnet. In den Fällen, in denen die Biographie einer Person noch an verschiedenen Fundstellen erscheint, werden diese durch ein Semikolon getrennt.

The Polish Biographical Index, 2 cumulated and enlarged edition (PIB) is an alphabetically arranged list of the c. 280,300 biographical entries contained in the 1,208 microfiches of the Polish Biographical Archive (PAB I) and the Polish Biographical Archive. Series II (PAB II). Entries in the PAB I including its Supplement were taken from 302 of the most significant and representative biographical reference works which together make up ca. 980 volumes published between the 17th and the middle of the 20th century. These works, of utmost historical value, were originally conceived and structured in a variety of ways, e.g. listed chronologically or alphabetically, according to geographical aspects, or even in the form of ephemerides. The Polish Biographical Archive. Series II (PAB II) includes approx. 128 sources (194 volumes) originally published between 1949 and 1998. It extends the historical period covered to the end of the 20th century and additionally provides the latest outcomes of biographical research on persons from earlier periods of Polish history. In the PAB I and PAB II together biographical information on 143,710 persons from 430 source works (1,185 volumes) has been compiled. The biographical information on both famous and lesserknown figures spans a period from the 8th century AD up to the middle of the 20th century. In addition to the names themselves, the PIB provides information on dates of birth and death, profession, as well as the location in the PAB I and/or PAB II and biographical source references. Above all, the Index fulfils two functions: - The PIB is an Index for the PAB I and PAB II. Its concise structure considerably simplifies the use of the archives and the location of information in them. - At the same time, the PIB is in itself a useful tool for biographical research. The information contained in each entry makes immediate identification possible, thus facilitating further searches in the PAB I and PAB II. The Index provides the user with direct access to the biographical source, either to the original book form or to the microfilmed version in PAB I and PAB II. (K. G. Saur Publishers will gladly provide information on which libraries in a given region or country own a copy of PAB I and PAB II).

B. Scope / Informational Value PAB I and PAB II cumulate a large number of biographical sources which are otherwise difficult to access. Much effort and the cooperation of libraries in Poland and Germany made the evaluation of unique biographical material possible. Now, for the very first time in history of historical-biographical information on Poland extensive historical material has been published in a single work. In addition to that it also contains biographies of Poles living abroad and foreigners connected in a substantial way with polish history. The informational value of the Archive is further increased when used in combination with the systematically and meticulously electronicallyprocessed information of the PIB. Furthermore the PIB provides the user with an overview of all corners of society - political, cultural, and economic, etc. Some idea of the wide coverage of the PIB can be seen from this sample list: - scientists - statesmen - lawyers - doctors - theologians - architects - writers - sculptors - painters - sales and businessmen - musicians - comedians - actors - militia

1. Biographical entries are arranged alphabetically by name, whereby "umlauts" (ä, ö and ii) file as ae, oe and ue. The filing of Polish letters follows the Polish alphabet. The letters % ç, c, ή, ó, 1, s, ζ and ζ are filed after the letters a, e, c, η, ο, 1, s, and z. Letters from further alphabets like ß, á and é / è are filed like ss, a respectively e. Cyrillic letters are treated according to their Latin transcription. In cases of identical names, the sequence is arranged chronologically by dates of birth of the individuals in question. Monograms are filed before complete names. 2. In cases of identical names, the order of sequence is determined as follows: a) Christian name without epithet b) Christian name with epithet c) Several Christian names without epithet d) Several Christian names with epithet e) Surname without epithet f) Surname with epithet g) Surname with Christian name h) Compound name with epithet i) Compound name with Christian name

D. Cross-references and Name Variants 1. Because the PAB I, its Supplement and PAB II were edited gradually, persons may appear under various forms of their name and in different sections of the alphabet. This applies in particular to religious persons, married women, people bearing compound names or known by their nicknames (pseudonyms), and also to names which begin with a prefix (prepositions, articles or a merging of prepositions and articles). Where possible, such cases are provided with cross-references to other variants. Crossreferences are placed in front of phonetically identical name variants. Obviously, during the production of the index, every effort was made to file together all biographical data and location references to PAB I and PAB II on one individual. 2. A major goal of the editors was to present a complete biographical unit for each person treated. In order to achieve this, phonetic and orthographic name variations for one and the same person, as well as non-Polish and Polish forms, were drawn together whenever possible. The cross-references in PIB provide the necessary help to find the location in the PAB I and PAB II.
