PREFACE The collections of papyri in the Princeton University Library were acquired through the generosity of Mr. Robert Garrett and Mr. John H. Scheide. With the present volume the work of editing these collections is completed. Acknowledgments are due to graduate students in the Department of Classics who have assisted in reading and editing these documents. In the present volume Mr. Herbert Long recognized No. 112 as from Xenophon, and Mr. Bruce Metzger edited Nos. 113 and 159. Professors Kase and Youtie have given their assistance freely. The junior editor has borne most of the burden of deciphering the fragments and he has also read the proof and prepared the indices. The funds for publication were provided by the Andrew Fleming West Foundation and by the University Research Fund. A. C. J. S. P. G.

ILIAD I ,

209-239

7.0 X 32.0 cm.

2nd century

This fragment comes from a roll as the verso is blank. Since top and bottom are preserved, the column had 31 lines and this fragment presumably belonged to the eighth column, assuming that Col. I had 22 lines with heading and title. The first book of the Iliad would thus require 20 columns. W e may estimate the width of each column at about 21 cm., and if the space between each column averaged 6 cm. it would require almost 5 m. for the complete roll. Except for the itacism (1. 2 3 3 ) and an evident error in copying (1. 2 3 4 ) this fragment offers no variants from the standard texts. See Collart, Revue de Philologie 5 8 ( 1 9 3 2 ) , 315-349; 5 9 ( 1 9 3 3 ) , 33-61; 6 3 ( 1 9 3 9 ) , 289-307, for list of Homeric papyri found since the publication of T . W . Allen's edition.
