For watercolorist Kateri Ewing, painting is all about capturing the awe she feels for the natural world. In preparation for painting, Kateri regularly walks and photographs the woods, meadows, and waterways in two of her favorite places near her home in western New York state: Wyoming County and Knox Farm State Park. Kateri’s passion for painting and drawing is infused in her teaching, and sharing her techniques with students of all ages is her favorite thing about being an artist. Kateri’s original watercolors are currently represented by Meibohm Fine Arts.

You may want to buy a few other things we use in the class, but these will get you going! Paint • Cool red PV19 (Daniel Smith Quinacridone Rose or Winsor & Newton Permanent Rose) • Warm red PO71 (Daniel Smith Transparent Pyrrol Orange or Winsor & Newton Scarlet Lake PR188) • Warm Blue PB29 (French ultramarine, all artist-grade brands) • Cool Blue PB15.3 (Phthalocyanine blue green shade, all artist grade brands) • Warm Yellow PY150 + PR209 (Winsor & Newton New Gamboge, or PY97 + PY110 Daniel Smith New Gamboge) • Cool Yellow PY3 (Danie Smith Hansa Yellow Light or PY175 Winsor & Newton Winsor Lemon) Brushes • Size 8 pointed round watercolor brush (Kateri recommends Princeton Neptune or Kolibri SQI-Line) • Size 2 pointed round watercolor brush (Kateri recommends Escoda Perla or Princeton Neptune) • 1-inch flat watercolour brush (Kateri recommends Princeton Neptune with the pale aqua handle)

Supplies Paper • Student grade watercolor paper, at least 9x12 in hot press and cold press (See brands listed in what we actually used in this class.) Other • 2-H Pencil (or a regular number 2 pencil) • Kneaded eraser • White ceramic dinner plate • Two glasses of clean water • White paper towels and tissues (no aloe or lotion in them) Items Used in Video Lessons Watercolor paints • Daniel Smith tubes I choose to use Daniel Smith paints in tube because I can create my own split-primary limited palette on a white china plate, as seen in this class. I use these first six pigments throughout the class.

• Hansa Yellow Light (cool yellow) • New Gamboge (warm yellow) • Quinacridone Rose (cool red) • Transparent Pyrrol Orange (the very best warm red I have found) • French Ultramarine (warm blue) • Phthalocyanine Blue (GS) (cool blue)

The remaining pigments will be discussed and are extras, but great to have!

• Quinacridone gold • Phthalo green • Burnt sienna

Supplies • Olive greens by Winsor and Newton and M Graham (used only to show the difference between brands) • Winsor & Newton Cotman set of 12 pans • Mission watercolor pan set of 24. This is a great ready-made set. It comes with lots of great transparent to semi-transparent pigments, many of which are single pigments, but the great thing is that there are six pigments that are perfect for the split-primary we will learn about in this class.

• Cool yellow: PY3 Lemon yellow • Warm yellow: PY65 Permanent yellow deep • Warm red: Red orange PO73 • Cool red: Permanent magenta PR122 • Warm blue: Ultramarine light PB29 • Cool blue: Cerulean blue PB 15.3

This set demonstrates very well how a manufacturer can give different names to specific pigments. Cerulean blue, for example, in this set is really phthalocyanine blue green shade.

Glossary of Terms Wash A semi-transparent layer of color Hard edge An abrupt transition between color areas (shapes) Soft edge A smooth transition or fade between color areas (shapes) Stretching (paper) A method of wetting paper, affixing it to a board, and blotting away excess water, resulting in a flat surface that will not bubble or buckle Sizing (paper) Refers to an agent applied to paper as a protective layer to mitigate the absorption of water into the paper
