A NOTE ON BIBLIOGRAPHY

It was not within the scope of this book of translations and texts to compile a comprehensive bibliography on Ottoman literature or culture from the fourteenth to the twentieth centuries. We have, for the most part, listed the books that we used in some very specific way in producing this volume and want our readers to recognize that there are any number of valuable books that we did not use in this manner and, therefore, do not cite. For those who want to know more about the Ottomans, their history, and their culture, this is a good time. Publication of exciting work on the Ottomans has burgeoned in recent years. The basic histories of the Ottoman state and the Turkish Republic in English-Stanford Shaw's 1976 history for example-have been supplemented and updated by a spate of innovative studies that provide fascinating and detailed glimpses into life and culture during Ottoman times. Among the exceptional books in English that do not appear in our bibliography, a few of our favorites and good starting points for those who want to know more are the following. The Ottoman palace, its public ceremonies, and its inner life are the topic of Giilru Necipoglu's magnificent Architecture, Ceremonial, and Power: The Topkapz Palace in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries (Cambridge and London: MIT Press, 1991) and Leslie Peirce's immensely interesting The Imperial Harem: Women and Sovereignty in the Ottoman Empire (New York and Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1994). The outstanding biographical work on an Ottoman literary figure-the poet, intellectual, and historian Mustafa 'Ali-is Cornell Fleischer's Bureaucrat and Intellectual in the Ottoman Empire (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1986). Victoria Holbrook's brilliant study of Sheyh Galib's Beauty and Heart has already been mentioned in the introductory essay and 33 1

Bibliography appears in the bibliography. Among the newer historical writings that expand and modify the traditional story of the Ottomans are Rifa'at AbouEI-Haj's theoretical critique Formation of the Modem State: the Ottoman Empire Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries (Albany: SUNY Press, 1991), Palmira Brummett's insightful work on the Ottoman sea trade, Ottoman Seapower and Levantine Diplomacy in the Age of Discovery (Albany: SUNY Press, 1994), and Daniel Goffman's study Izmir and the Levantine World, 1550-165° (Seattle and London: University of Washington Press, 1990).
