There are dozens of
of these
studies showing that alcoholics are chronically deficient in certain essential nutrients.
Other studies show that when these nutrients

Nutrition and the Mind
Introduction:
The Promise of Vitamin Therapy (Orthomoleclolar Psychiatry) Orthomolecular medicine and orthomolecular psychiatry are
now
over a quarter of a century old, having started with Dr.
Linus Pauling's 1968
article in
Science Magazine called
"Orthomolecular Psychiatry." As Dr. Philip Hodes explains,
"'Orthomolecular' means the right amount of the right nutrients.
.

.
Thanks
to Dr.
Roger Williams's concept of
'biochemical individuality,' and Dr. Bernard Rimland's concept
of 'toximolecular brains,'
we found
that
many people with
so-called mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, autism,
depression, and manic-depression, can be helped, in a majority
of cases. They must
first
clean the toxins out of the brain and
then provide the brain with the right amounts of the right nutrients.
"Each person
is
biochemically individual," Dr. Hodes
continues, "so the government standards for the
requirements of various nutrients actually have

Michael Schachter says that most psychiatrists
consider the possibility of a chemical imbalance in the brain
as well as
any psychosocial
factors. In the
former case, they then
immediately resort to using some kind of drug to try to right the balance, without looking into the possibility that there could be nutritional factors contributing to the patients psychological state. "I

but most psychiatrists are unaware that sometimes even small
amounts can be a problem."
Whenever
possible, Dr. Schachter prefers nutrition-based
therapies. "I use nutritional substances or substances that are
natural to the body, either food substances or accessory food factors
— such
as vitamins or minerals or

—
as the
treatment of choice for a person s mental disorder. Sometimes the vitamins
may be megadoses because
a person
may be what
we call vitamin-dependent on a particular nutrient. For example, some children who
are hyperactive or having learning disorders

Another barrier
to the inclusion of

The money to fund such studies is not forthcoming,
