THE NIGHT SKY Look up! Every night, the sky puts on a dazzling light show. It is hard to believe, but you are staring deep into Space. Each tiny, twinkling light that you see is a distant star or planet. There is the friendly face of the Moon, too. It gazes down on you as you gaze back. Now think about this as you look up at the night sky. You are standing on a big, round, rocky planet. This is Earth, your home. Earth feels so unbelievably big, but it is just one small planet among billions in this enormous place called Space.

This light zooming across the sky is a space rock that has come close to Earth. It turns into a ball of fire called a shooting star.

3. Crew capsule docks at ISS.
Imagine you are an astronaut in a rocket launching into Space. The engines roar and the rocket shakes and rattles as it picks up speed. You can hear people talking to you over the radio. They are part of a team of scientists at Mission Control, and they make sure everything goes like clockwork. In just eight minutes, you will leave Earth far behind and enter the blackness of Space. Spacecraft take off from a huge space center. It takes years to prepare for a rocket launch. Astronauts need to train for life in Space and practice the jobs they will do when they get there.

LIVING IN SPACE Ready to dock! Just imagine, you have spent 19 hours in a rocket traveling from Earth. Now it is time to join the International Space Station, or ISS. The ISS moves incredibly quickly, taking just 90 minutes to zoom around our planet. For the next six months, this huge machine will be home. Astronauts from around the world work, eat, exercise, and sleep here, just like on Earth. The difference is that in Space things are weightless—astronauts and objects float around if they are not held down.

READY FOR A SPACEWALK ?

What do you think it would feel like to go on a spacewalk? You would have to put on a bulky spacesuit and helmet, then open the hatch door and float out into the darkness. Imagine the views of Earth far below! A special cable, called a tether, keeps astronauts safely attached to the space station while they are outside. There are lots of important jobs to do, such as making repairs, testing equipment, and taking photos. Say, ‘Cheese!’

A TRIP TO THE MOON Shut your eyes and imagine you are on the Moon, bumping along in a moon buggy. Watch out for the holes! This special car is called a lunar rover. There are no sides or roof, just seats, wheels, and a floor. It can fold up to fit inside a rocket. Look! There is our beautiful blue and green planet in the distance. From the Moon, you can see Earth’s land, its oceans, and the clouds drifting across it. The Moon is very different. There are no trees or water, but there is still plenty to explore. You can collect moon rocks and take pictures of everything you see.

OUR VERY OWN STAR What do you think this giant ball of fire might be? It is our star in Space—the Sun! It is hard to believe, but the sunshine that warms your face on a summer’s day and peeps through the curtains every morning comes from this huge, superhot star. The Sun’s rays travel millions of miles through Space to reach us. Everything that lives on Earth needs the Sun to survive. It gives us heat and light and helps plants to grow. Astronauts cannot visit the Sun, because it is much too hot and too far way. Instead, we send spacecraft with no people on board called probes. They gather information and send it back to Earth, where scientists examine the findings.
HOW HOT?
The surface of the Sun is five times hotter than any volcano erupting on Earth.
SCORCHING CORONA
The corona is a layer of glowing gases that surrounds the Sun. It is 100 times hotter than the Sun’s surface.

Darker patches on the Sun are called sunspots. They are cooler than other parts of the surface.

WHO LIVES ON MARS?
Deimos
Do you know what this roaming robot is doing? It is a Mars rover on a mission to explore our nearest neighbor in Space. So far, no humans have set foot on this rocky red planet. Probes and rovers controlled by people on Earth are sent to discover more about Mars. The rovers carry special tools and science equipment to search for signs of life. Scientists want to know whether people could live here one day. Would you like to visit Mars? Although it is the closest planet to Earth, it is millions of miles away. It would take about nine months on board a speeding rocket to get there!

SPACE JUNK Watch out! In Space, you will need to dodge space junk and avoid flying litter. Bolts, screws, astronauts’ tools, and bits of old rockets are just some of the things that you could see whizzing past on their route around Earth. All this junk has come from our planet. We need to clean up Space to make it safe for future missions. Even tiny objects are dangerous when they are speeding along at 17,000 miles per hour!

POSTCARDS FROM THE PLANETS What would you discover if you could whiz off into the Solar System? After visiting each of the eight planets, you would have very different adventures to write about on your postcards home. Some planets are boiling hot and some are freezing cold. The planets are a rainbow of colors because they are made from different rocks and gases. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are dry and rocky. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are balls of swirling gas. If you tried to land on the gas planets, you would fall straight through!

WELCOME TO THE MILKY WAY! Imagine a place so gigantic that it would take a rocket millions of years to fly from one side to the other. You live inside that place—it is a galaxy! A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and planets. Planet Earth and everything in the Solar System are in a swirly galaxy called the Milky Way. On a clear night, when you look up at the sky you see thousands of higgledy-piggledy stars splattered like paint. This is not the whole of Space that you see, but just the stars in our little corner of the Milky Way.

After the Sun, the next nearest star to Earth is 24 trillion miles away! It is called Proxima Centauri.

THE UNIVERSE What would you see if you could zoom to the far reaches of Outer Space? You would find an inky blackness peppered with 100 billion glowing galaxies, each one packed with billions of stars. All of the galaxies and absolutely everything in Space is called the Universe. The Earth and the Sun are just tiny pinpricks inside one galaxy called the Milky Way. The Universe is more enormous than anyone can imagine! It stretches further than the most powerful telescope can see. Scientists think that the Universe is still growing and getting bigger every day! There is so much left to discover. Where would you like to explore?

Most of the Universe is made up of invisible stuff called dark matter. Scientists know it exists because it pulls and bends things nearby.

LOOKING UP AT SPACE You can be a space explorer without ever leaving planet Earth. Space scientists study the Moon, stars, and planets using powerful telescopes that show faraway things up close. There are different kinds of telescope. A radio telescope looks like a huge bowl. It picks up invisible radio waves and shows us things we can’t see with our eyes. Another type of telescope sits inside a domed building called an observatory. The roof opens and the telescope points upward to the glittering night sky above. The best views of all come from space telescopes. These powerful machines are launched into Space by rockets. They send pictures and information back to Earth.

STAR —a ball of gas that shines in the sky. Earth’s star is the Sun.
SUN—the star at the center of the
Solar System. Its heat and light allow plants, humans, and animals to live on Earth.
TELESCOPE— an instrument used to see things that are very far away. They can be based on Earth or sent into Outer Space.
UNIVERSE—all of Space and
everything that has ever existed in it—planets, stars, galaxies, energy, and time.
SOLAR SYSTEM —the eight planets, including Earth, and the dwarf planets, moons, asteroids, meteoroids, and comets that travel around the Sun.
