PREFACE In April 1977, the University of Pennsylvania formally acknowledged Marian Anderson's gift of her music library, correspondence, and records of her professional career. Miss Anderson has said that the happiest day of her life was August 22, 1979—Marian Anderson Day in Philadelphia. It was a day that culminated with a soldout concert in her honor by Luciano Pavarotti, the proceeds from which would establish Marian Anderson scholarships and promote her collection at the University. This was one more memorable occasion in a long career that began in a modest neighborhood in South Philadelphia, where she began singing in the Union Baptist Church at the age of twelve. The exceptional quality of her voice was recognized by her friends, and donations from her church helped pay for her singing lessons. These contributions were supplemented by her earnings from scrubbing neighbors' steps for fifteen cents. She made her debut with the Philadelphia Philharmonic before she was twenty, but later became discouraged and decided to go to Europe for further study. With seven hundred fifty dollars in travelers' checks and a determination to work hard, she made a modest entrance into the musical world. At first she was singing in sparsely populated concert halls in Germany, France, and Italy, but accounts of her remarkable voice soon led to successful engagements in England, Scandinavia, and on the Continent. In the spring of 1 9 3 5 , Sol Hurok, the influential impresario, was strolling past a concert hall in Paris and spotted a notice of "an American contralto." "I'll just stop in for a minute," he told his wife. The rest is history. Under his auspices, she made a triumphant return to America and sang in an increasing number of concerts across the country. At the famous Easter Sunday concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington in 1939, Miss Anderson sang before 75,000. Years of distinguished guest engagements followed in Israel, India, the Orient, with celebrated performances in the United States and Europe, climaxed by

her operatic debut at the Metropolitan in 1955. Miss Anderson has been an ambassador of good will for her country and her race, her voice and personality winning friends wherever she went. She was appointed a United States delegate to the United Nations by President Eisenhower and has served on many humanitarian commissions. In 1 9 3 5 , she visited Jean Sibelius in his home. He listened with tears in his eyes while she sang some of his songs and said, " M y roof is too low for your voice." He dedicated his song "Solitude" to her, and his autographed manuscript is one of the memorable pieces in the Anderson collection. There are now 248 boxes in the collection, detailed in this catalog: correspondence, biographical data and memorabilia, programs and itineraries, scrapbooks and clippings, awards and honorary degrees. Also included are 68 boxes of music, much of it bearing Miss Anderson's markings for performances, and 1 5 boxes of photographs—pictures of her with John and Robert Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Eleanor Roosevelt, the King of Sweden, and school children around the globe. The primary value of this collection is obviously as a resource for those interested in the personality and career of Miss Anderson. In addition, the collection provides insights into many aspects of American social and cultural history and the progressive attitude toward blacks here and abroad. Dr. Otto E. Albrecht has brought his broad musical background to the editing of the music sections of the catalog, and we are grateful for his expert advice. We value the assistance of Natalie Terrell in arranging the collection and the advice of Kostas Ostrauskas concerning musical titles. We also appreciate the interest of many friends who have made this catalog possible. To Marian Anderson, we acknowledge the honor that she has brought to our University by her gift of this collection. NEDA M .
