Notes for Users A. Purpose and Function The Korean Biographical Index (KBI) contains about 111,000 biographical entries on approx. 38,000 persons contained on a total of 345 microfiches in the Korean Biographical Archive (KBA). The biographical entries in the KBA were taken from 127 reference works (comprising 382 volumes) originally published between 1900 and 2000. The period covered ranges from the beginnings of history until the end of the 20th century. Containing a large number of extremely rare source works which are very difficult to access or are no longer accessible to the public, the Korean Biographical Archive represents an extraordinary biographical treasure trove which, in some cases, offers the last remaining information on thousands of individuals from Korea's past and present. A large amount of biographical information was also taken from journals, year books and exhibition catalogues. In addition to the names themselves and their variants, the Index also lists, wherever possible, information on dates of birth and death, the occupation of each person, as well as the location in the Archive and references to the biographical sources used. Above all, the Index fulfils two functions: 1. It is a cumulative register of the Korean Biographical Archive. The alphabetical structure and further references for each person enable the user to see immediately whether information on the person they are looking for is in the Archive. Information on microfiche number(s) and fiche frame(s) then allow easy access to the original entry. 2. Furthermore, the Korean Biographical Index is a biographical research tool in its own right. Even when the Archive itself cannot be accessed, the information contained in the Index makes the original source works available directly to the user.

C. Indexing of Names and Transcription The extremely heterogeneous transcription of names in the various source works which have appeared in French and Russian as well as in Korean, English and German demanded that names be spelled in a standardized way according to a consistently applied transcription method, and so the McCuneReischauer Romanization method commonly used throughout the academic community was applied during the editing of the Korean Biographical Archive and its index. We apply the customary exception of "I" "Yi" in family names also to proper names. For details (especially some changes in syllabic finals and initials) see 'The Romanization of the Korean Language,

based upon its phonetic structure' in the Transactions of the Korea Branch, Royal Asiatic Society (Vol. XXIX, 1939) or http://www.mccune-reischauer.org. The following differences in Romanization should be taken into consideration: 1. The whole matter of the exact transcription of Korean names is a subject of considerable debate that is complicated by the fact that individual Koreans insist on a transcription of their own names that ignores all transcription norms. It is for this reason that the entries for one person can be found in different places in the various sources as in the following examples: Kwal-lük; also under: Kwan-rok; Gwan-nog; Kwan-ük; Gwaneug; Gwan-rog Kim, Pyöng-yön; also under: Kim, Ip; Gim, Byeong-yun; Kim Satkat (Sakkat); Kim, Nip. The fixing of personal names is particularly difficult if they come from source works that were written without the use of Chinese and/or Korean characters. In such cases, the indexing used in the original work had to be adopted.

D. Cross-references The Korean Biographical Index offers, in addition to approx. 38,000 biographical main entries, ca. 3,000 cross-references. The most important of the name variants found, but also pseudonyms, real names, maiden and/or married names etc., were listed in the main entry. Wherever realistic, crossreferences were placed in alphabetical order. General cross-references were used if certain variations occurred frequently. This makes it easier for the user to look for large name groups. Very few family names are common in Korean (150-200 according to Pratt/Rutt), and so this more general form of cross-referencing had to be favored, because every other approach would have resulted in an unmanageable flood of cross-references. Alternative (usually idiosyncratic) orthography of names were added to the main entry but generally not crossreferenced. The following are examples of the necessity and usefulness of adding cross-references to individuals. a.

E. Indexing of Entries Where names are spelled the same way, the different entries are sorted chronologically. Apostrophes and diacritics are irrelevant for indexing purposes. Likewise, honorary attributes in Korean such as Hwang-hu, Kun, Tae-gun etc., were ignored in sorting the entries. The most commonly-found titles are given at the end of these Notes for Users. The family name, "Sök" (i. e the first syllable of the Sino-Korean for S[h]akyamuni, an honoary title of Siddhartha Gautama), of Buddhist monks is not recorded. In the case of Buddhist and Christian clerics, cross-references are not given where they would consist only of the real family names. Certain name affixes have no influence on the indexing of nonKorean names: 1. Aristocratic names or connecting words, e. g.: de, von, della, van 2. Titles and affixes to names e.g.: jr., Lord, Father, Sir, Mrs

person referred to did not have an entry in the "Encyclopaedia". A synopsis in English was added to more than 19,000 biographical entries from these and two further source works. These summaries are neither translations of nor additions to the original biographical entries: instead, they are short synopses of the content. Although the editors of course cannot be held responsible for any incorrect representation of historical figures in the original source works, we will nevertheless be grateful for further information. Please direct suggestions to the publishers' address. As in all of the Biographical Archives of K. G. Saur Verlag, the KBA was also given Roman numeral paginated fiches (IXVI). Here, also photomechanically reproduced, are the title pages, imprint pages, tables of contents, introductions, forewords and afterwords, indexes of abbreviations, hidden bibliographies etc. of all source works used. This is important for the user in particular during scholarly research, as the editors evaluated only the biographical part(s) of sometimes sizeable source works. In addition, the alphabetical list of names is preceded by five source works which did not lend themselves to the usual editorial practice of reformatting biographical works for reproduction in the 10.5 χ 14.8 cm format. However, their content is so valuable that we were not willing to forgo it in the Korean Biographical Archive. Cross-references were set at the relevant places in the Archive's alphabetical list of names.

G. Occupations The information given on occupations, which can help in the identification of individuals, was taken from the sources. Public or political offices were indicated. Where one person held more than one such office, only the most important is named. This is particularly true in the case of statesmen, but also holds for clerical and military hierarchies. In some cases, the title given is not an occupational one in the strictest sense but is an indication of the position on which the historical importance of the person is based, e.g. "Martyr", "Disciple of...", "Righteous soldier". Historical occupational titles were retained in the vast majority of cases. In a very few cases, information on occupations had to be left out due to lack of relevant information in the sources.

H. Sources The information on the sources used follows the occupational terms, and is given a lemma. In most cases, this is only one work; however, for the best-known persons sometimes more than ten works are cited. A list of the 127 biographical source works, sorted alphabetically by lemma, can be found after these "Notes for Users".

F. Editorial Notes According to the editorial intentions of the Biographical Archives published by K. G. Saur Verlag, the Korean Biographical Archive contains entries for persons who either lived and worked in Korea or had a strong relationship to the country and its history documented in their biography. The biographical entries in the Archive are photo-mechanical reproductions of the complete text of the source works with no evaluation of content. This clearly demonstrates the special documentary quality of the Archive. Especially in the case of multiple entries for one person, earlier, sometimes revised, points of view or dates can be found next to the results of the latest research. Editorial corrections have been made to original dates with extreme care and only when there was incontrovertible supporting evidence. Standard works such as Han'guk minjok munhwa tae paekkwasajön [Encyclopedia of Korean Culture], 27 vols. Seoul 1991 or Han'guk inmyöng taesajön [Korean Biographical Dictionary], Seoul 1976 were used as references in decisions regarding the indexing of names and dates. The latter was used when the

Locations

The KBI gives the location in the form of the microfiches number followed, separated by a comma, by the corresponding frame number(s). Where several locations on different microfiches are available for one individual, these are separated by a semicolon. When the biographical information is located in the large size fiches (1-11), this is indicated with a "G" in front of the number.

Κ. Conclusion and Acknowledgements The editorial board started work on the Korean Biographical Archive project in Leipzig at the beginning of the year 2000. Based on the experience gained with other, earlier Biographical Archive projects, a heterogeneous group of scholars, librarians, specialists and other experts was formed to pool their knowledge and expertise in the editorial preparations for the Archive (especially with regard to the search for, collection of and selection of literature). Only as a result of this approach was it possible to reflect in a thorough and balanced way the rich history, national as well as personal, of this ancient culture in its development into a modern nation state, including the painful division after the Korean War. Informationswert und Funktion Der Koreanische Biographische Index (KBI) erschließt rund 111 000 biographische Artikel zu den mehr als 38 000 Personen, die im Koreanischen Biographischen Archiv (KBA) auf insgesamt 345 Mikrofiches enthalten sind. Die biographischen Einträge des KBA wurden 127 Nachschlagewerken in 382 Bänden entnommen, welche ursprünglich zwischen 1900 und 2000 erschienen sind. Der Berichtszeitraum umfaßt die Spanne von den geschichtlichen Anfängen bis zum ausgehenden 20. Jahrhundert. Durch eine ganze Anzahl äußerst seltener, öffentlich nur schwer oder gar nicht mehr zugänglicher Quellenwerke stellt das Koreanische Biographische Archiv einen außerordentlichen biographischen Fundus dar, der in vielen Fällen die einzige erhaltene biographische Information zu Tausenden von Personen aus der Geschichte und Gegenwart Koreas bietet. Viele biographische Informationen wurden zusätzlich aus Zeitschriftenserien, Jahrbüchern und Ausstellungskatalogen entnommen. Außer den Namen und ihren Varianten werden im Index, soweit irgend möglich, die Lebensdaten sowie der Beruf oder die Tätigkeit jeder Person angegeben, dazu die Fundstelle im Archiv und der Hinweis auf die dazu ausgewerteten biographischen Quellenwerke. Dadurch erfüllt der Index grundlegend zwei Funktionen: 1. Er ist ein kumuliertes Register zum Koreanischen Biographischen Archiv. Die exakte alphabetische Auflistung mit den erwähnten weiterführenden Hinweisen zu jeder Person ermöglicht dem Benutzer schon auf den ersten Blick festzustellen, ob Informationen zu einer gesuchten Person im Archiv zu finden sind. Die Angaben von Mikrofiche und Feldnummer(n) erlauben dann den bequemen Zugang zum Originaleintrag. 2. Darüber hinaus stellt der Koreanische Biographische Index ein eigenständig benutzbares Recherchemittel für biographische Erstinformationen dar. Vor allem wenn das Archiv selbst nicht zur Hand ist, eröffnen die im Index enthaltenen Hinweise dem Benutzer den direkten Zugang zu den ausgewerteten originalen Quellenwerken.

sind, machten durchgängig eine Vereinheitlichung der Ansetzungen nach einer verbindlich gehandhabten Transkription nötig. Bei der redaktionellen Arbeit am Koreanischen Biographischen Archiv und seinem Index fand die weitgehend in Wissenschaftskreisen übliche McCune-Reischauer-Romanization Anwendung. Der üblichen Ausnahme „I" „Yi" bei Familiennamen haben wir uns auch bei Eigennamen angeschlossen. Für genauere Angaben (besonders in bezug auf die Veränderungen bei Anund Auslauten einzelner Silben) siehe „The Romanization of the Korean Language, based upon its phonetic structure" in den „Transactions of the Korea Branch, Royal Asiatic Society", Vol. XXIX, 1939, oder http://www.mccune-reischauer.org. Die äußerst heterogenen Namensansetzungen bei ganz unterschiedlich gehandhabten Umschriftnormen in den originalen Quellenwerken, die neben koreanischer, englischer und deutscher auch in französischer und russischer Sprache erschienen

Überhaupt ist die exakte Umschrift koreanischer Namen ein recht umstrittenes Problem, das zudem häufig durch die persönlichen Eigenheiten einzelner Koreaner belastet ist, die auf Schreibungen bestehen, die jede Umschriftnorm außer acht

lassen. So kommt es vor, daß die Ansetzungen zu einer Person in den verschiedenen Originalquellen auf die folgende Art differieren können: Kwal-lük; auch unter: Kwan-rok; Gwan-nog; Kwan-ük; Gwaneug; Gwan-rog Kim, Pyöng-yön; auch unter: Kim, Ip; Gim, Byeong-yun; Kim Satkat (Sakkat); Kim, Nip. Naturgemäß besonders schwierig waren die Namesansetzungen von Personen aus Quellenwerken, die ohne die Wiedergabe chinesischer und/oder koreanischer Schriftzeichen arbeiteten. Hier mußte die im Originalwerk gegebene Ansetzung übernommen werden.

D. Verweisungen Zusätzlich zu den gut 38 000 biographischen Haupteinträgen bietet der Koreanische Biographische Index ca. 3 000 Verweisungen. Die festgestellten Namensvarianten, aber auch Pseudonyme, eigentliche Namen, Geburts- und/oder Ehenamen von Frauen usw. sind schon beim Haupteintrag verzeichnet. Wo immer sinnvoll, wurden dann die entsprechenden Verweisungen ins Alphabet eingeordnet. Falls sich bei Namensansetzungen bestimmte Verschiedenheiten häuften, sind allgemeine Verweisungen zur Anwendung gekommen, die es dem Nutzer erlauben, gezielt die meist größeren Namensgruppen aufzusuchen. Da im Koreanischen nur sehr wenige Familiennamen gebräuchlich (nach Pratt/Rutt etwa 150-200) sind, mußte diese allgemeinere Art der Verweisung favorisiert werden, weil jede andere Herangehensweise zu einer völlig unübersichtlichen Flut von Verweisungen geführt hätte. Alternative (meist privatistische) Schreibweisen der Namensansetzung wurden dem Haupteintrag also beigegeben, aber meist nicht verwiesen. Prinzipiell läßt sich an den folgenden Beispielen nachvollziehen, wo es notwendig und sinnvoll schien, individuelle Verweisungen anzusetzen. a. von privatistischen Schreibweisen, Pen names oder Titeln auf die koreanische Form: Syngman Rhee Yi, Süng-man Auck, Yoon-tae -> Ok, Yun-t'ae Sonu, Gene-ho Sön-u, Chin-ho Yön-am Pak, Chi-wön Pok-ch'ang Kun -> Yi, Chöng b. von koreanischen Formen auf die Originalschreibung: Paek, Kyu-sam -> Blanc, Marie-Jean-Gustave Mok, In-dök -> Möllendorff, Paul Georg von Paek, Tök-ki -> Bedeski, Robert Edward

E. Ordnungskriterien Bei Namen gleicher Schreibweise werden die verschiedenen Einträge chronologisch sortiert. Apostrophe und Diakritika sind für die Sortierung irrelevant. Auch herrscherliche Attribute im Koreanischen, wie Hwang-hu, Kun, Tae-gun usw., wurden nicht in die redaktionelle Sortierung einbezogen. Eine Aufstellung der gebräuchlichsten Titel ist im Anschluß an die Benutzungshinweise zu finden. Der Familienname „Sök" (d. i. die erste Silbe der sinokoreanischen Entsprechung für S[h]akyamuni, einen Ehrentitel des Siddhartha Gautama) buddhistischer Mönche wird nicht wiedergegeben. Im Falle buddhistischer und christlicher Geistlicher werden dann keine Verweisungen gegeben, wenn diese nur aus dem eigentlichen Familiennamen bestehen. Bei nicht-koreanischen Ansetzungen haben bestimmte Namensbestandteile keinen Einfluß auf die Sortierung: 1. Adelsprädikate oder Bindewörter, z.B. de, von, della, van 2. F. Editorische Hinweise Nach den editorischen Intentionen der Biographischen Archive im K. G. Saur Verlag wurden in das Koreanische Biographische Archiv Einträge zu Personen aufgenommen, die in Korea gelebt und gewirkt haben oder eine andere starke, nachweisbare Beziehung in ihrer Biographie zu diesem Land und seiner Geschichte hatten. Die biographischen Artikel des Archivs sind photomechanisch reproduzierte Volltextwiedergaben aus den Quellenwerken ohne Wertung des Inhalts. Hiermit wird die besondere dokumentarische Qualität des Archivs deutlich. Gerade bei Mehrfacheinträgen zu einer Person finden sich frühere, teilweise revidierte Sichtweisen bzw. Datierungen neben den Ergebnissen der neueren Forschung. Korrekturen von Originaldaten durch die Redaktion sind nur äußerst behutsam und bei klar belegbarer Eindeutigkeit vorgenommen worden. Als maßgeblich für die Entscheidung bei Namensansetzungen oder Datierungen wurden Standardwerke wie Han'guk minjok munhwa tae paekkwasajön [Encyclopedia of Korean Culture], 27 vols. Seoul 1991 oder Han'guk inmyöng taesajön [Korean Biographical Dictionary], Seoul 1976 gewählt. Letzteres für den Fall, wenn die betreffende Person in der „Encyclopedia" keinen Eintrag hatte. Aus diesen beiden Quellenwerken und zwei weiteren wurden insgesamt mehr als 19000 biographische Artikel mit einer Kurzfassung in englischer Sprache versehen. Diese Zusammenfassungen stellen keine Übersetzungen oder gar Ergänzungen der originalen biographischen Einträge dar, sondern kurze Inhaltsangaben. Auch wenn die Redaktion natürlich keine Verantwortung für eventuell falsche Darstellung historischer Figuren in den originalen Quellenwerken übernehmen kann, so sind wir doch dankbar für Hinweise und weiterführende Informationen. Wir bitten diese an den Verlag zu richten. Wie allen Biographischen Archiven des K. G. Saur Verlags wurden dem KBA (I-XVI) römisch paginierte Fiches beigegeben. Hier finden sich, ebenfalls photomechanisch reproduziert, die Titelblätter, Impressumseiten, Inhaltsverzeichnisse, Einleitungen, Vor- oder Nachworte, Abkürzungsverzeichnisse, versteckten Bibliographien usw. aller verwendeten Quellenwerke. Dies ist für den Benutzer vor allem bei der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit wichtig, denn die Redaktion hat im Archiv immer nur den/die biographischen Teil(e) eines ansonsten umfänglicheren Quellenwerkes ausgewertet. Darüber hinaus wurden dem Namensalphabet fünf Quellenwerke vorangestellt, die sich für die redaktionell übliche Zerlegung der biographischen Werke auf Reproduktionsvorlagen im Format 10,5 χ 14,8 cm nicht eigneten. Sie sind inhaltlich aber so gewichtig, daß wir im Koreanischen Biographischen Archiv nicht darauf verzichten wollten. In das Namensalphabet des Archivs wurden an den entsprechenden Stellen Verweisungen eingefügt.

G. Berufe, Tätigkeiten Die Berufs- oder Tätigkeitsbezeichnungen, die bei der Identifizierung von Personen helfen können, sind immer den Quellen entnommen. Öffentliche oder politische Amter wurden angegeben. Hatte eine Person mehrere solcher Ämter inne, wird nur die bedeutendste Position genannt. Dies trifft besonders auf Staatsmänner, aber auch auf geistliche und militärische Hierarchien zu. In manchen Fällen handelt es sich nicht um eine Berufsbezeichnung im engeren Sinne, sondern eher um eine Angabe der Stellung, worauf die historische Bedeutung der Person gründet, wie etwa „Martyr", „Disciple of ...", „Fatherin-law", „Righteous soldier". Historische Berufsbezeichnungen blieben weitestgehend erhalten. In sehr wenigen Fällen mußte aufgrund der Quellensituation auf eine Berufsangabe verzichtet werden.

Hinweise für den Benutzer H. Quellen Die Angaben zu den ausgewerteten Quellen stehen im Haupteintrag nach den Berufsbezeichnungen und sind mit einem Kurztitel versehen. In den meisten Fällen ist dies nur ein Werk; für die bekanntesten Persönlichkeiten werden manchmal mehr als zehn Werke zitiert. Ein Verzeichnis aller 127 biographischen Quellenwerke, alphabetisch sortiert nach den Kurztiteln, befindet sich im Anschluß an diese Hinweise.

Fundstellen

Der KBI gibt als Fundstelle die Nummer des Mikrofiches und anschließend, durch Komma getrennt, die entsprechende(n) Feldnummer(n) an. Mehrere Fundstellen zu einer Person auf verschiedenen Mikrofiches sind durch Semikola getrennt. Die Fundstellen der biographischen Informationen auf den Großformat-Fiches (1-11) wurden mit einem vorangestellten „G" gekennzeichnet.
