The idea of using clove oil came from Jan Svenungsson, who told me in 2011 that he had asked Gerhard Richter how he kept his paintings from drying too fast. Ratti
Every studio has founding members. When we moved into our new shared workspace in 2016, Ratti was there from the start. He was a comfort during creative blocks, and never complained when people didn’t wash their dishes (although he had every reason to). He doesn’t work much himself. I think he’s more of a philosopher.

I love plants, but I don’t have green fingers. If they want to survive in my studio, plants have to manage with both abundant care and a complete lack of water (for at least one to two months). Pothos is up to this. It was later joined by a spider plant, also very low-maintenance. What I particularly like is how you can propagate them very easily with offshoots. 203 Leere Weinflaschen (Jahrgang 1983) Empty wine bottles (vintage 1983) 204 Postkarte „Ema (Akt auf einer Treppe)“, Gerhard Richter

Tiar told me that this garden used to look quite different. Instead of a wall there were lots of banana plants. But he changed it because snakes kept coming onto the terrace from the surrounding paddy fields, and bananas are an excellent breeding site for mosquitos. Because the artists don’t get on with the animals. But he’s very proud of the bamboo. It’s easy to take care of—and look how fast it grows!

Schade.
On July 16, 2018, Anis sends me a photograph of the wooden object. I quite like it, but it’s still a bit too bulky; they could trim a little off the sides. I went to the wood workshop with just a sketch that I traced from Dürer. But they haven’t done too badly. The best thing is the color of the wood. Shiny yellow jackfruit. In time it’ll go grey, says Anis. Pity.

13, 14, 15, 16
In my opinion there’s nothing that disfigures a picture more than the oversized attestation of authorship on the front side. Collectors love it, Xenia told me. Unlike some of her colleagues, she had already held the picture in her hands before signing it in bright red paint. “To reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim,” writes Oscar Wilde in his preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891).

380 Stuhl Thonet Nr. 14 mit kaputtem Geflecht Thonet chair no. 14 with broken wickerwork

“This simple chair was the foundation of Thonet’s world renown. The ‘Chair No. 14,’ today model 214, is seen as the traditional Vienna coffee house seating, and is the world’s most manufactured chair, as well as being one of the most successful industrial products ever. 50 million had been sold by 1930. It embodies all the advantages of the new bentwood technique: formal beauty, functionality, economy of material, affordability, and durability. It originally cost three guilders, which was why it was called the ‘three-guilder chair.’” (Wikipedia)

Postcard, Cézanne, Le Rocher rouge (Orangerie, Paris)
I was never really taken with the Impressionists. But having stayed in Paris in 2021, I now know that the main reason for this might be because the really good works are there. I saw Cézanne’s The Red Rock, from 1895, for the first time on July 9, 2021, in the Orangerie, and it hit me like an avalanche. Since then I’ve been wondering whether it isn’t so important what you paint, but how. (I’m also in the habit of buying a postcard whenever I go to a museum. My collection is continually growing.)

A Cheerful Conceptualism Approaching Jari Genser’s Painting Klaus Speidel
With his works, Jari Genser puts his finger in a metaphysical wound. Talking about the “copy of the copy of the copy” usually implies a lack of quality, possibly resulting in less intense experiences. Think of forgeries, imitations, plagiarisms, fakes, knock-offs, or the “poor images” of the digital era. Plato’s criticism of artists comes to mind: they were to be banned from his ideal republic for producing imitations of imitations. According to this logic, every material object, for example a table, is copied by craftspeople from a prefiguration in the realm of ideas. When artists then imitate material objects, they depart for a second time from the actual thing, creating deceptions that have no place in the ideal republic. Making a picture of a picture, we take yet another step from the actual. The original substance lessens with every new image. So the modern disdain for the copy could well have its metaphorical roots in Plato’s doctrine of forms. Underlying the preference for the artistic original is probably a deep metaphysical anxiety about the real (and not, for example, about cultural capital and investments). In Genser’s work, objects that are present in the studio turn into signs. His photographer father’s light box is no longer a personal souvenir in his paintings. Rather, it reflects the artist’s process and the subject matter of his work. After all, photographers produced one thing with their light boxes and Ektachromes before Photoshop: images of images. Accordingly, Genser’s works aren’t only ‘metapictures’ (W. J. T. Mitchell) because they reflect their own making, but also because they give cause for thought about images. Instead of pure chance constellations of things in the studio, we see curated details that prompt further viewing and thinking. Similarly to the work of the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, who is referred to in Punishment IV and Punishment V, Genser’s paintings are an invitation to play. And if you accept the invitation, you can practice careful looking and interpretation through them. Here Genser’s written inventory of the things he depicted comes in handy. It provides information about what the naked eye can’t discern. Unlike Rémy Zaugg’s twenty-seven attempts to put a single painting by Cézanne into words (Constitution d’un tableau, 1963–68), Genser focuses on naming things (for example “Large mixing plate,” “Stiegl beer case”), while facts and perceptions are verbalized only exceptionally and sketchily (such as “Cable conduits with clamps, laid by myself,” “Rabbit-skin glue. Smells terrible”). So it is not so much about “running ones head up against the limits of language,” as with Zaugg. Rather, it verbally completes what can be seen visually. However, relationships between things can be identified in the picture without being described in the text. But if the world is “the totality of facts, not of things,” as Ludwig Wittgenstein prominently declared, here the supremacy of the image is performatively claimed (which Wittgenstein may perhaps have admitted through a “visual theory of language”). The way Genser distributes roles between language and image provokes thought about media specificity: what can language do that the image can’t, and vice versa? A mere description of Genser’s practice of repeated “repainting himself” sounds like rigorist self-flagellation (as also suggested by the first title, Punishment) or conceptual navel-gazing. In reality it’s neither one nor the other. Genser by no means stylizes himself as a purely spiritual being. So beer crates meet Théodore Géricault, Kierkegaard meets a coronavirus podcast, and Josephine Halvorson and Michael Haneke meet party props. Even though people are never directly visible, Genser paints a place where the artist lives and loves. His studio is a far cry from the caricature of an aseptic space cut off from the outside world. It undergoes transformation and travels with the artist nomad from Vienna to Indonesia, then France, the countryside, and back to Vienna. The paintings and annotations give the attentive viewer precise information about where the artist was at the time of their creation. They also show what he cared about. The artist makes an explicit appearance in the self-portrait (from Punishment IV onward), in the mirror (from Punishment VII), and sometimes in a photograph (from Punishment VI). But his traces and belongings point to him with more intensity and clarity: a baseball cap, a hoodie, cups, and, of course, brushstrokes everywhere… There’s a lot that can be worn, draped over, put on, picked up. 22
Without making a large-format entrance, the body is ubiquitous as an absence. Although Genser’s work is conceptual, it’s accessible because it isn’t rigorist. The artist changes his technique occasionally, and the self-imposed rules appear to alter. If the studio is relatively bare at first, over time the number of things increases; with the onset of Covid, a view from the window appears. In Indonesia Genser finally breaks with the unity of place and becomes a surrealist: During his residency nature plays such an important role that the sky appears on the studio wall. For me these departures make him more approachable than superheroes of artistic renunciation like On Kawara or Roman Opałka, forever adhering to their principles—stoic, stubborn, stupid—in the production of their minimal works. Genser’s works are more cheerful, not just because of their range of color but also because they let the world in and the artist inhabits his space as a human being. The pictures don’t coldly think about pictures here, like in Joseph Kosuth’s work, but cheerfully, like in Saul Steinberg or René Magritte. This affiliation is conveyed by the Magritte reference in Genser’s wonderful self-portrait from Punishment IV onward. The caption “Ceci est une…”—the rest remains open—is a typographical and textual reference to Magritte’s famous The Treachery of Images (1929), showing a pipe captioned “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (This is not a pipe), which negates the apparent obviousness of the picture. But in Genser’s accumulated evidence we find more than what is not a pipe (Punishment V). And even the pipe becomes a pipe more plausibly because it just lies around instead of floating prominently in the foreground. The question as to the level of reality on which this or that element sits is recurrent and concrete, as the specificity of the various media—mirror included— is ultimately absorbed by the paint. The smaller an element, the more obscure the medium portrayed. Is this a depicted or a painted mask, a postcard, a photograph, a mirror, or a painting? are questions I can’t help asking myself. Sometimes I check in the previous painting… But as soon as I have reassured myself as to the reality of an element, it appears as a picture in the next picture. In the book, the long period of creative time melts into seconds of page-turning, and finally into co-presence, so that almost every object is at once a thing, a photograph, and already a painted image of an image. The differences liquify, and the longer I look, the less I ask myself whether we see the things themselves or their shadows. As the intensity of Jari Genser’s works increases, Plato’s problems recede. With each painting, more time and space is absorbed. This can be felt even when older paintings gradually blur and finally vanish in the depths of the pictorial space. And so Jari Genser’s paintings gently dissolve our old anxiety about the real and prepare us for a life in which a picture of a picture is no less significant than reality. In this they are profoundly contemporary.

Life is but play; A throb, a tear: A sob, a sneer; And then—good day.

Perhaps the immobility of the things that surround us is forced upon them by our conviction that they are themselves and not anything else, by the immobility of our conception of them.

Punishment XIII (Update)
The Earth itself is, as we know, a heap of rubble from a past future, and humanity the thrown together, bickering community of heirs to a numinous yesteryear that needs to be constantly appropriated and recast, rejected and destroyed, ignored and suppressed so that, contrary to popular belief, it is not the future but the past that represents the true field of opportunity.

Punishment XII (Ulenspigel)
There’s an ethics to observational painting that’s very interesting to me; that is, I want to encounter something in the world and to look at it, but I don’t want to own it, I don’t want to kill it, I don’t want to compete with it, I don’t want to copy it. It’s like a very particular thing that I want from it, and that is an encounter, an engagement and a sense of exchange, of meaningful exchange.

For the Aymara people living in the Andes, the past lies ahead and the future lies behind.

Technique must always be born from inner necessity. The best technique is the one that allows the painter to say what he wants to say as completely and directly as possible. As mere outer ingenuity, as virtuosity without inner necessity, it awakens the opposite of interest. […]
Art is not just mind or hand, but the unity of both. The frequent disdain for the technical, namely from literary circles, is unjustified. The material an artist selects to express his idea, and how he applies it, is not a matter of chance. […] It is only the harmony of volition and ability in both the mind and the hand that makes the work of art.
Max Doerner (1921) 67

Strafe VII (Meister und Margarita)
Punishment VII (Master and Margarita)
I’m not guided by politics, world events, or new inventions, what pushes me are my inner thoughts. My work is a constant dialogue with myself and works on a cathartic level of trying to understand things in life that I find emotionally complex.

Imagination abandoned by reason produces impossible monsters: united with her, she is the mother of the arts and the source of their wonders.

Strafe IV (Caesar and Christ)
Punishment IV (Caesar and Christ)
Quite rightly it has been said of him that he recorded those scenes like crime scenes. A crime scene, too, is deserted. Atget snaps clues. With Atget, photographs become exhibits in the trial that is history.
Magician and surgeon behave like painter and cameraman. The painter, while working, observes a natural distance from the subject; the cameraman, on the other hand, penetrates deep into the subject’s tissue. The images they both come up with are enormously different. The painter’s is an entity, the cameraman’s chopped up into a large number of pieces, which find their way back together by following a new law.

Punishment III (A Picture of a Picture of a Picture etc.)
The measure of artistic value is exactitude, and therein lies pure pleasure. It’s the defense of order against chaos. It’s worth working for this reason alone, and it results in enthusiasm. I don’t have to want to give pleasure. I think that exactitude is pleasurable in itself. Anyone receptive to artistic expression will be happy as long as something is “well made.” But not because the artist pursues a contentrelated aim. I don’t believe in aims. I believe in exactitude. I believe in the craft of it, in artisanal honor.

“One must go further, one must go further.” This impulse to go further is an ancient thing in the world. Heraclitus the obscure, who deposited his thoughts in his writings and his writings in the Temple of Diana (for his thoughts had been his armor during his life, and therefore he hung them up in the temple of the goddess), Heraclitus the obscure said, “One cannot pass twice through the same stream.” Heraclitus the obscure had a disciple who did not stop with that, he went further and added, “One cannot do it even once.”

Strafe I (Ein Bild von einem Bild)
Punishment I (A Picture of a Picture)
A painting, a crime. The punishment: to paint it again, then paint that picture, and so on and on. A Sisyphean task—but sometimes you forget which way time flows.

1 Übers.
n.: André Gide, Journal 1889–1939, Paris: Gallimard, 1941, S. 40.
It Is about Time, the deliberately ambiguous title of this book, examines the issues of time and temporality addressed in the series Paintings within Paintings (2012 onward) and the inventory implied in the act of publication (and its conceptual preliminaries): after around ten years it’s time for Jari Genser to reflect on his own artistic practice. A more detailed look at the paintings collected here calls to mind concepts such as structure, order, and discipline as Genser’s working parameters. The series’ title, Paintings within Paintings, describes a genuinely pictorial narration in which the respective image includes the origination process of its predecessor. On placing Punishment I (A Picture of a Picture) (2012) and Punishment II (A Picture of a Picture of a Picture) (2013) side by side it can be seen that the first is contained within the second—supplemented by the studio situation as it was at the time. This immediately recalls the mise en abyme, the abysmal placement described by André Gide. In his diary, Gide recorded his fascination with this recurring technique, which he ascribed to heraldry: “I very much like to see the theme of a work of art expressed once more on the level of it characters—similar to the depiction of a coat of arms in its own field.”1 Jari Genser adds a complex temporal structure to this doubled expression. The series Paintings within Paintings also addresses time autobiographically: the titles of the respective paintings refer like diary entries to the audiobooks Genser was listening to during their creation—such as The Master and Margarita, by Mikhail Bulgakov, or Caesar and Christ, by Will Durant. The reference is more explicit in the paintings numbered VII to XIII, which visually manifest pages from the books heard. Genser also emphasizes the significance of literature for the artistic process in the title Punishment, which recurs in works I to XIII and recalls Albert Camus’s happy Sisyphus— painting as a punishment to occupy the human heart. The referential space of visual art, so fundamental to the series, is likewise closely interwoven with the artist’s biography. The time of a painting’s creation is marked—either implicitly, in taking up and adapting a composition—or explicitly, in painting a postcard that happens to be in the studio—by the works of art viewed in this period, such as Titian’s Diana and Actaeon or Théodore Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa. A further autobiographical element can be detected in the inclusion of the respective place of work, when in the first three paintings of the series Genser depicts his own apartment, then studio situations in Vienna, Indonesia, and Paris. Particular weight is given to the contents of the respective studios—excessive portrayal, visual collection, accumulation, and assemblage make the Paintings within Paintings series into a proliferating hoard of the artist’s material living conditions. All his things are noted down; exactitude is elevated to an artistic principle. In this Genser develops a radically regulated and ordered counterproject to previous inventorial artistic strategies, such as Daniel Spoerri’s collaborative project An Anecdoted Topography of Chance (1962 onward). In his conceptual rigor and consistency, Genser alludes to current issues far beyond visual art: think, for example, of the infrastructure of the blockchain, whose security is based on its inclusion of all previous blocks. And so the inventory method and the publication of It Is about Time coincide: in its capacity as a medium, this book is a cut in time, and gives an overview of the Paintings within Paintings works from the past ten years. And when Jari Genser compiles the paintings in book form and supplements them with an inventory of painted objects, this is “the theme of a work of art expressed once more on the level of it characters.”
