PREFACE

This volume presents the original extracts of History of the Sjriac Dioceses by Aphram I Barsoum. It seems that Barsoum never completed this work but managed to publish these extracts between 1938 and 1941 in the periodical Al-Majallah Al-Batriyarkiyyah alSuryaniyyah, a publication of St. Mark's monastery in Jerusalem during the British Mandate. The first issue of volume 8 (1941) was the final issue of Al-Majallah that made it to press. It contained the last part of the History of the Syriac Dioceses that was ever published, ending in "to be continued." World War II had taken its toll, and the press at St. Mark's was unable to continue its operation. How much of the History of the Syriac Dioceses was completed is not known. Patriarch Barsoum's papers were dispersed after his death. I have examined some at the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchal library in Ma'arrat Saydnaya. A few sheets which could have belonged to the same work made it to my private collection, given to me by Dr. Matti Mousa in 2007. Archbishop Yuhanna Ibrahim of Aleppo has copies of some of the papers. Some of the papers in my possession appear in The Collected Historical Essays of Aphram I Barsoum (Gorgias Press). It is hoped that the rest of the papers will be made available by the various respective holders even if in facsimile form. This Arabic text accompanies Matti Moosa's English translation in volume 1. The text is printed here as facsimile from the original as to keep original Indie pagination. New Arabic numerals were added in the footer to provide sequential pagination. Each article is preceded by the first page of the issue in which it appeared to provide the full reference. Barsoum organized the material by patriarch, and under each patriarch gave the biographies of the bishops and maphrians of that period and numbered them sequentially. Under Patriarch Ignatius Shukr Allah, the biography of Basilius Li'azar (p. 60 here) is vii

viii unnumbered and appears between biographies 5 and 6. In Moosa's translation, he is assigned number 6 and the rest of the numbers are shifted by one. George A. Kiraz
