ach year for a number of years the editors of The Great Ideas Today ha\'e presented a symposium in which eminent penons undertake to discuss an idea that is of current interest. Each time this has been done, four or fi\'e such persons ha\'e been in\'ited to contribute to the discussion. L'sually they ha\'e been persons of very different backgrounds, with ex­ tremely di\'ergent ,·iews of the subject at hand, whose comments ha,·e reflected these disparities, sometimes to good effect and sometimes not. The editors ha\'e therefore thought it proper to bring a measure of unity to the proceedings In adding a son of coda or appendix in which they recall the wa,s in which the idea being considered is treated in the great book
