Die Varianten stehen am Fuss der Seiten, und im Text ist durch Cursivdruck der variirten Worte auf sie verwiesen; das sieht zwar nicht gut aus, scheint mir aber enipfehlenswerth zu sein. Am Kopf der Seiten gebe ich Verweisungen auf Tatian und Otfried, um durch die Vergleichung das Verständniss des Textes zu fördern. Die Hinweise auf Otfried haben nebenbei noch einen andern Werth: sie zeigen ohne Weiteres, wie ausserordentlich breit der altsächsische Dichter verfahren ist. K a r l s r u l i e , den 8. Sept. 1882. Einleitung. Die umfassendste Hs. des Heliand ist C, der C o t t o n i a n u s , im britischen Museum zu London. Der Text zerfällt hier in einzelne, durch Absätze, grössere Initialen und fortlaufende Zählung bezeichnete Kapitel. C enthält v. 1—5968 des vorliegenden Textes. M, der M o n a c e n s i s (früher in Bamberg) ist eine durch Ausschneiden von Blättern vielfach verstümmelte Ha.; es fehlen die Verse 1 — 8 4 incl., 2198 b — 2255, 2514b — 2 5 7 5 , 3 4 1 4 b — 3 4 9 0 , 3951 — 4016, 4675— 4740, 5275 b — 5968, also mehr als ein Sechstel der in C vorliegenden Verse. Eine Kapitelbezeichnung durch Abschnitte und Zählung findet sich in M nicht. Ausserdem besitzen wir ein Prager Fragment, P, das v. 9 5 8 b — 1 0 0 5 incl. umfasst.* Längere Zeit galt der Text von 0 für besser als der von M. Sievers hat jedoch den Nachweis geführt, dass M zweifellos den Vorzug verdient.** Nur in Bezug auf die Wortstellung steht 0 etwas höher als M. * Herausgegeben von Hans Lambül : ein neuentdecktes Blatt einer Heliandliandschrift. Vili M und C gehen auf eine gemeinsame Vorlage zurück, die schon zahlreiche Fehler aufzuweisen hatte, vgl. 300, 327, 369, 386, 483, 537, 628, 681, 693, 849, 879, 881, 1081, 1121, 1191, 1212, 1553, 1600, 1796, 1879, 1883, 1928, 1955, 1977, 1987, 2412, 2426, 2434, 2457, 2476, 2505, 2609, 2688, 2730, 2893, 2975, 3040, 3166, 3234, 3401, 3829, 3892, 3904, 3918, 4023, 4086, 4190, 4238, 4264, 4341, 4517, 4610, 4898, 4909, 5039, 5141, 5202, 5214. Ob zwischen dieser Vorlage von MC und dem Original noch Mittelglieder anzunehmen sind, lässt sich nicht entscheiden. Von Ρ lässt sich nur sagen, dass es weder M oder C als Vorlage gehabt, noch Vorlage für eine dieser Hss. gewesen, v, 980 hat Ρ mit C den Fehler her ran gemein, 984 mit M den Fehler afstop; in beiden Fällen kann aber schon ein gemeinsamer Archetypus von M, C und Ρ den Fehler gehabt und M bezw. buch des Althochdeutschen und Altsächsischen, Paderborn 1880, Bd. 2 seiner „Sprache und Litteratur Deutschlands"). Die Sievers'sche Ausgabe, welche genaue Abdrücke beider Handschriften liefert, hat für alle sprachlichen Untersuchungen den Ausgangspunkt zu bilden. Was die Sprache des Heliand betrifft, so sind wir darüber einigermassen im Unklaren. Die beiden Handschriften stimmeu in ihren Lauten und Formen nicht überein. M ist rein niederdeutsch, „altsächsisch*), C dagegen repräsentirt einen Dialekt auf der Gränze zwischen Niederdeutsch und Fränkisch. Ausserdem zeigen sich Spuren angelsächsischer Schreibung. Welche der beiden Hss. der Sprache des Originals näher steht, wissen wir nicht. Die Sprache der beiden Handschriften nach Lauten und Formen hat eine kurze Darstellung gefunden durch Schmeller in seinem Glossarium, eine etwas ausführlichere durch M. Heyne in seiner kleinen altsächsischen und altniederfränkischen Grammatik, Paderborn 1873. Ueber die Persönlichkeit des Helianddichters lässt sich nur das eine mit Bestimmtheit sagen, dass er ein Geistlicher gewesen: das geht aus der Art seiner Quellen unzweifelhaft hervor. Er hat benützt die pseudotatianisclie Evangelienharmonie, die Commentare des Hrabanus Maurus zu Matthaeus, des Alcuin zu Johannes, des Beda zu Lucas und Marcus, vgl. E. W i n d i s c h , der Heliand und seine Quellen, Leipzig 1868, C. W. M. G r e i n , Heliandstudien I, Cassel 1869, E. S i e v c r s , zum Heliand, Zs. f. d. Alterth. XIX, 1. Die Heimath des Dichters ist unbekannt (vgl. das oben über die Sprache gesagte). Ad. Holtzmann hat die Behauptung aufgestellt (Germ. I, 470), dass der Verfasser ein Angelsachse gewesen, ohne jedoch erhebliche Gründe f ü r seine Ansicht beizubringen. Der Terminus post quem f ü r die Abfassung des Heliand ist das J a h r 8 2 0 oder 821, denn in dieser Zeit ist, wie Windisch nachgewiesen hat, der vom

Xll Dichter benützte Matthaeus-Commentar des Hrabanus Maurus entstanden. Sehr weit ins neunte Jahrhundert die Dichtung herabzurücken, geht aus allgemeinen Gründen nicht an; die Einführung des Christenthums kann noch nicht so gar weit zurückliegen. Genaueres über die Entstehung des Gedichtes würden wir wissen, wenn wir den Angaben der Präfatio Glanben schenken dürften, nach welcher die Anregung dazu von Ludwig dem Frommen ausgegangen wäre. Allein um diese Präfatio steht es sehr bedenklich. Sie ist zwar keine moderne F ä l s c h u n g , wie J. W. Schulte behauptet hat (Ueber Ursprung und Alter des Heliand, Glogauer Programm 1873; Zs. f ü r d. Phil. IV, 49), aber sie ist dermassen von späteren Zusätzen erfüllt, dass es unmöglich fällt, den historischen Kern herauszuschälen. Es kann sogar bezweifelt werden, ob die echten Theile der Präfatio sich wirklich auf den Heliand beziehen. Den künstlerischen Werth der Dichtung hat man früher, besonders durch den Vergleich mit Otfrieds

Evangelienharmonie verführt, über Gebühr erhoben. In neuerer Zeit hat sich eine massvollere Auffassung Bahn gebrochen. Eine treffende Würdigung gibt W. S c h e r e r , Geschichte der deutschen Litteratur S. 46; vgl. noch aus f r ü h e r e r Zeit Ed. B e h r i n g e r , zur Würdigung des Heliand, Würzburg 1863 (Programm); d e r s . , Krist und Heliand, ebda 1870 (ebenfalls Programm), sowie die schon vorhin citirte Schrift von Grünhagen. Der Dichter zeigt guten Kunstverstand in der Auswahl des biblischen Stoffes, aber wenig Originalität und epische K r a f t in der Verarbeitung derselben. Charakteristisch und anziehend ist die Art und Weise, wie der Verfasser den fremdartigen Stoff der deutschen Auffassung nahe gebracht, Christus und die Apostel nach dem Bilde des deutschen Herzogs und seiner Mannen gezeichnet hat. Freilich bleibt im Grunde d e r . Gegensatz zwischen den Geboten des Christenthums und den germanisch-heidnischen Idealen ein unlösbarer. Ueber die literarhistorische Stellung de3 Heliand lässt sich bei seiner Vereinzelung kein Urtheil gewinnen. Doch erhält man eher den Eindruck, dass derselbe am Ausgang als am Eingang einer literarischen Epoche stehe. Die mechanische Art, mit welcher Synonyme f ü r einen Begriff gehäuft worden, lässt ahnen, dass die Form der Alliterationsdichtung auf deutschem Boden für den Untergang reif geworden. Zum Schlüsse sei bemerkt, dass man dem Dichter des Heliand noch ein weiteres Werk zugeschrieben hat. In der früher Cädmon beigelegten angelsächsischen Genesis findet sich ein Stück, v. 235—851, über den Sturz der bösen Engel, das nicht vom Verfasser des ganzen Werkes herrühren k a n n , sondern eingeschoben ist. Stück aus dem Altsächsischen umgeschrieben ist** und zugleich den Satz aufgestellt, dass der Dichter dieses alttestamentlichen Bruchstücks mit dem Helianddichter identisch sei. Zwingende Beweisgründe für die letztere Behauptung liegen jedoch nicht vor. ** Aber doch so verändert, daee dae altsächsische Original nicht mehr herzustellen ist, vgl. ζ. B. v. '¿80 heofones waidend and Itine bœdon, was alteächsisch nicht alliteriren würde.
