A. Funktion und Informationswert Der Griechische Biographische Index (GBl) bietet in drei Bänden eine alphabetisch geordnete Auflistung der 73 604 Personen, deren Lebensläufe im Griechischen Biographischen Archiv (GBA) enthalten sind. Das GBA ist eine auf 453 Mikrofiches veröffentlichte alphabetische Zusammenstellung von 91 380 biographischen Artikeln aus 90 Quellenwerken, die von 1677 bis 1996 erschienen sind. Entsprechend der Idee des Archivs - Volltextwiedergabe der Originalartikel ohne Wertung, Kürzung oder Weglassung sind alle in den Quellenwerken enthaltenen biographischen Eintragungen vollständig übernommen. Der GBl liefert außer dem Namen und den Namensvarianten Angaben über Lebensdaten und berufliche Tätigkeiten jeder Person, die im GBA enthalten ist. Zudem werden sowohl die Fundstelle auf den Mikrofiches als auch die jeweils ausgewerteten biographischen Quellenwerke genannt. Aufgrund dieser Konzeption erfüllt der GBl zwei Funktionen: -

Er ist ein Register zum GBA. Seine komprimierte Form erleichtert den Gebrauch des Archivs erheblich. Durch die präzise Angabe der Fundstelle wird ein lästiges Suchen vermieden. (Der K. G. Saur Verlag erteilt gerne Auskunft, welche Bibliotheken ein Exemplar des GBA besitzen.) Gleichzeitig stellt dieser Index ein eigenständig benutzbares Hilfsmittel für die biographische Recherche dar. Dadurch ist er besonders dort von Wert, wo das GBA nicht zur Hand ist. Der GBl öffnet dann dem Benutzer den direkten Weg zu den Originalquellen.

B. Namensansetzung Der Absicht nach sind im GBA alle biographischen Artikel aus den Quellen, unabhängig von ihrer Anlageform und Sprache, in ein einziges Alphabet gebracht. Im Rahmen der redaktionellen Bearbeitung wurde dabei versucht, sprachliche Verschiedenheiten, orthographische Varianten, unterschiedliche Umschriften und voneinander abweichende Auffassungen bei der Bestimmung der Ansetzungsform eines Namens so zu vereinheitlichen, daß die in den Quellenwerken unter differierenden Formen und an verschiedenen Stellen verzeichneten identischen Personen auch tatsächlich an einer Stelle zu finden sind. Da das Archiv jedoch in Lieferungen erschien, mithin seine Bearbeitung sukzessive erfolgte, war es unvermeidlich, daß sich gelegentlich eine Person auch an zwei oder mehr Stellen verzeichnet findet. Angestrebt wurde für den GBl, daß ein und dieselbe Person nur mehr an einer Stelle nachgeschlagen werden muß. So ist vielfach eine Zusammenführung von Einträgen gelungen, die im GBA an verschiedenen Stellen stehen.

Die Unterschiedlichkeit der Namensansetzung in den Quellen und die sukzessive Bearbeitungsweise von Biographischem Archiv und Index hatten in Einzelfällen zur Folge, daß dennoch eine Person auch im Index unter mehreren variierenden Namensformen vorkommen kann. Namensabweichungen wurden ins laufende Alphabet eingefügt als Verweisungen auf den Haupteintrag.

C. Ordnungskriterien Die Ordnung der biographischen Einträge erfolgt zunächst alphabetisch. Dabei wurden die griechischen Schriftzeichen nach den Regeln für die alphabetische Katalogisierung für wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken (RAK-WB) transliteriert, jedoch ohne Verwendung von Makron und Trema. Die Umlaute ä, ö und ü sind wie ae, oe und ue geordnet. Verweisungen gehen den gleichlautenden Einzeleinträgen voran. Persönliche Namen (mit Beinamen) und Familiennamen (mit Vornamen) werden gleichrangig behandelt. Doppelnamen stehen nach den einfachen Namen. Liegt Namensgleichheit vor, erfolgt die weitere Ordnung chronologisch.

D. Berufe - Tätigkeiten - Status Eine oder mehrere Berufsbezeichnungen werden nach den Lebensdaten angeführt und dienen als weitere Anhaltspunkte bei der Identifikation von gesuchten Personen. Die Berufsangaben sind den Quellen entnommen. Bei fremdsprachigen Quellen sind die Berufsangaben ins Deutsche übersetzt, sofern es sich nicht um spezifische Amts- und Berufsbezeichnungen ohne deutsches Äquivalent handelt. Enge Begriffe wurden weiten vorgezogen.

E. Quellen Die Quellenangaben stehen nach den Berufsbezeichnungen im Kursivdruck. Die Quellen werden abgekürzt zitiert; die Liste der im GBA enthaltenen Quellenwerke und ihrer Kurzfassungen im GBl findet sich im Anschluß an die Benutzungshinweise. Bei mehreren Quellenangaben erscheinen die Quellen in alphabetischer Reihenfolge.

F. Fundstellen im GBA Der GBl nennt als Fundstelle die Fichenummer im GBA, danach die Nummer des Feldes oder der Felder auf dem Mikrofiche. Bei mehreren Fundstellen sind diese in numerischer Reihenfolge aufgeführt und die Fichenummern durch Semikolon voneinander getrennt.

A. Functions and Information Content In its three volumes, the Greek Biographical Index (GBI) offers an alphabetically structured index of 73,604 individuals whose biographies are contained in the Greek Biographical Archive (GBA). Published on 453 microfiches, the G B A is an alphabetical compilation of 91,380 biographical articles f r o m 90 source works originally published between 1677 and 1996. Corresponding to the idea of the Archive - full narrative accounts of the original articles without evaluation, abridgement, or omission - all biographical entries contained in the source works were adopted completely. Apart f r o m the name and name variants, GBI provides biographical information and occupational details on each individual listed in the G B A . Microfiche locations and bibliographical details of the biographical sources are given in addition to that. As a result of this design, the G B I fulfils two principal functions: - It is a register of the G B A , its condensed f o r m facilitating the use of the Archive considerably. At the same time, this index presents a tool to be used in its o w n right for biographical research. Wherever the G B A is not available, it will prove to be invaluable, leading the user directly to the original sources.

B. Naming According to intention, all biographical articles in the G B A were taken f r o m the sources, independent of their structure and language, and alphabetized together. In the scope of the editorial preparation it has been attempted to standardize linguistic differences, orthographic variances, differing transcriptions, and divergent perceptions of a name so that persons listed in the source works under various f o r m s and at different points can actually be found in one place. Since the Archive, however, was published in instalments, and its preparation occurred therefore successively, it is inevitable that a person is occasionally listed in two or more places. Planning for GBI provided that references to one and the same person who, however, appears in the Archive in articles that are entered under varying f o r m s of the same name and filed accordingly, be united in a single index citation. Thus articles located in two or more alphabetical locations in the Archive are cited under only one single f o r m in the Index. An added index entry refers to the main index entry.

However, because Biographical Archive and Index were compiled at different times, and because name f o r m s vary widely in the source works, certain variations could not be avoided. Deviations of names were incorporated in the alphabet and refer to the main entry.

C. Arrangement of Entries T h e order of the biographical entries is first of all alphabetical. In doing so the Greek characters have been transliterated according to the "Regeln f ü r die alphabetische Katalogisierung für wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken" (Regulations for Alphabetical Cataloguing; R A K - W B ) but without using macron and diaeresis. Letters with umlauts - ä, ö, and ü - are ordered as ae, oe, and ue. Cross-references precede individual entries with the same lettering. Personal names (with epithets) and family names (with first names) are treated equally. Double names follow singular names. Should names be the same, then they go according to chronological order.

D. Occupations - Activities - Status O n e or more vocational designations following the vital dates serve as further identifying aids. Vocational designations are taken f r o m the original article and have been translated into G e r m a n except of specific designations of offices or occupations that have no G e r m a n equivalent. Narrow terms are preferred to broader terms.

E. Sources References to the original sources appear in italics following vocational designations. Sources are cited in abbreviated f o r m . A list of sources, arranged alphabetically by the abbreviations used in the index citation, follows these Notes on Use. In case of multiple source references these appear in alphabetical order.

F. Location in the GBA As location of sources, the G B I gives the fiche number in the G B A , followed by the microfiche field number. In the case of several locations, they are listed numerically, the fiche numbers separated by semicolon.
