Vorwort Mit dem vorliegenden Teilband 6 wird Band II 33 von ANRW, der die lateinische und griechische Literatur der trajanischen und der frühen hadrianischen Zeit (mit zwangsläufigen Rückgriffen in die flavische Periode) behandelt, abgeschlossen. Dieser Teilband ist ganz den Schriften Plutarchs als solchen und ausgewählten Gesichtspunkten ihrer philologischen und historischen Interpretation gewidmet. Dabei stehen wieder Übersichtsbeiträge (z.B. E. VALGIGLIO, unten S. 3963 - 4 0 5 1 ) , Forschungsberichte sowie exemplarische Untersuchungen und Interpretationsstudien nebeneinander. Auf den allgemeinen Beitrag von VALGIGLIO, der auch die Funktion einer Einleitung erfüllen soll, folgen zuerst die Beiträge zu den 'Viten', dann die zu den sog. 'Moralia' und schließlich solche, die sich mit beiden Schriftengruppen befassen. Es ist zu bedauern, daß es nicht gelungen ist, zu den Römerviten und zu den nicht primär philosophischen Teilen und Aspekten der 'Moralia' rechtzeitig analytisch-kritische Forschungsberichte ähnlicher Art zu gewinnen wie zu den Griechenviten (A. J . PODLECKI und S. DUANE, unten S. 4053-4127). Die entsprechenden Beiträge von F. B. TITCHENER (unten S. 4128-4153) und G. W. M. HARRISON (unten S. 4646-4681) beanspruchen in erster Linie, bibliographische Arbeitsinstrumente zu sein. Die eingehenden Berichte zu Sprache und Stil der 'Moralia' von L. TORRACA und zur literarischen Form der 'Moralia' von I. GALLO (s. die Hinweise unten S. 4724) werden als 'Nachträge' zu dem vorliegenden Teilband am Schluß von Band II 34 (voraussichtlich 1993) publiziert werden. Eine Reihe von Beiträgen zu Plutarch erscheint in ANRW außerhalb der Rubrik 'Sprache und Literatur', und zwar in der Rubrik 'Philosophie, Wissenschaften, Technik'. Die Rubrik 'Sprache und Literatur' im II. Teil fPrincipat') von ANRW, die mit dem sprachgeschichtlichen Band II 29 (1983) begonnen hat, wird kontinuierlich mit Band II 34, dem letzten einer Gruppe von literaturgeschichtlichen Bänden über einzelne Autoren und Werke (II 30 —II 34), fortgesetzt und mit Bd. II 35 über allgemeine, d. h. nicht jeweils auf einzelne Autoren oder Werke konzentrierte Themen zur Form-, Gattungs-, Stoff- und Motivgeschichte der Literaturen der Principatszeit abgeschlossen werden. fondamentale sia il metodo della dimostrazione con esempi sono ben presenti e nei 'Moralia' e nelle 'Vite'), bensì quello di documentare la caratteristica comune attraverso tre tappe. La prima è dedicata a ciò che delle biografie è già presente nei 'Moralia'; a tale scopo, non ho voluto soprattutto rinunciare ai passi paralleli molto frequenti, che occupano perciò la metà dello spazio del primo capitolo; cosa che può essere noiosa; tuttavia penso che una documentazione più dettagliata possibile non si possa presentare altrimenti. Nel secondo momento, cerco di documentare la presenza dei 'Moralia' nelle biografie, cioè dell'elemento morale, che ha come perno la virtù (per la quale prescindiamo dai vari valori che essa può avere, per i quali si veda de aud. poet. 6,24 DE, con note ad 1. di VALGIGLIO, e p. X X X V I I dello stesso volume, Torino 1973); donde l'indugio su questo argomento, che può sembrare ridondante e noioso; ma anche qui la documentazione sul ganglio essenziale dei 'Moralia' passato nelle 'Vite' mi è parsa indispensabile. E con questo lo scopo del lavoro potrebbe sembrare esaurito. Tuttavia mi è parso utile e opportuno, se non addirittura necessario, illustrare nel terzo capitolo i rapporti di Plutarco con Roma, rapporti essenziali nella sua vita, ma anche nella vita della Grecia tutta, tenuta a fare politicamente i conti con Roma. Motivo questo già vivo nei 'Moralia', anche se più consistente, più significativo, più 'politico' nelle biografie; anche nei 'Moralia' sono espressi giudizi molto lusinghieri per Roma, considerata „la più bella delle opere umane" (de fort. Roman. 2). Anche qui si può trovare troppo esteso lo spazio dedicato alle frequenti lodi tributate ai Romani e ai Greci; è tuttavia da non dimenticare che le medesime, costituenti il tessuto connettivo e la vitalità pulsante della trama storica, sono brillanti testimonianze dello scopo morale delle 'Vite'. Donde l'insistenza di questo studio anche su questi motivi, anche a costo di cadere in elenchi che possono sembrare aridi; ma inutili non vogliono essere, rivolti come sono a rilevare un carattere distintivo dell'opera plutarchea, soprattutto delle biografie: una precisa documentazione tramite il Giano a doppio volto della esaltazione dei due popoli; due mondi che, nonostante tutto, stavano a guardarsi, e a risolvere problemi in comune, in rapporti politici, dai quali però non erano aliene la rivalità e la spiritualità. Del resto, le moltissime citazioni a documentazione di ogni fatto e soprattutto di ogni elemento atto a illuminare il pensiero del Cheronese sul suo motivo essenziale della morale, sulla sua preoccupazione di definire il carattere degli attori dei suoi numerosi 'drammi', sul suo interesse per Roma, rendono verificabile ogni attestazione, fornendo un orientamento nella mole dell'opera plutarchea. Se l'insieme non fosse sufficientemente organico, vuole avere almeno il merito di avere raccolto materiale per un giudizio più convinto e più convincente sull'opera unitaria di Plutarco, nonché sul suo pensiero, che scorre coerente e rettilineo da Cheronea a R o m a , dalla storia alla biografia, alla filosofia morale, alla religione tradizionale. Il succo del discorso di Plutarco è ricavabile dalle sue stesse dichiarazioni: Ttàcrav Kcuciav (psuiecéov èaiì 8i' àpexfjq (de adul. et am. 25,66 C), dove emerge il concetto aristotelico della (xecjóttii; (eth. Nic. II 7). Concetto ripreso e sviluppato in Cat. Min. 9,10:

„il vero zelo della virtù non nasce nell'uomo se non attraverso una estrema benevolenza e stima per chi ne dà l'esempio; mentre coloro che lodano i buoni senza amarli ne rispettano la fama, ma non ne ammirano né imitano le virtù", dove la virtù è strettamente congiunta coll'amore e il buon concetto nutrito per il virtuoso; verità innegabile: virtù e stima vanno di pari passo: non vera virtù quella di colui che non rispetta chi la possiede e la ispira. 'Moralia' e 'Vite Parallele' come depositarie della àpetf|, oggetto di ammirazione, con le condizioni relative perché l'imitazione si compia. Un motto integrabile con i versi di Dante: „fatti non foste a vivere come bruti, ma per seguir virtute e conoscenza" (inf. 26,119 — 20): cosa degna dell'umana semenza è il conoscere (la storia), per scovare (in essa) la virtù (da ammirare e da imitare).

I. La storia nei 'Moralia'

1. Esempi storici nei 'Moralia' Al tema fondamentale e preminente dei 'Moralia', cioè la filosofia, la morale, la virtù, si sposa in perfetta sintonia il tema della storia, la quale non fa in Plutarco la prima comparsa nelle 'Vite Parallele', storia in senso più vero ed ampio, sia pure nel paludamento biografico, ma è presente già nei 'Moralia', sia pure con grande parsimonia, a frammenti, in episodi spesso poco noti, che, a loro volta, caratterizzano le biografie (cf. Alex. 1,2). La conoscenza storica di Plutarco si rivela fin nelle opere retoriche della giovinezza. Il 'De fortuna Romanorum' è lo scritto più fitto di uomini illustri Romani (pochi Greci, qualche poeta), di personaggi famosi per le Ttpa^ei*;, favoriti dalla Virtù (3,317 DE), di A,an7ipoì KCÙ Sicmperceìi; av5pe
