areas in the later second century with those areas in the fourth. In the later second century there were extensive areas of extra-mural occupation. Ta the north there was the large and prosperous suburb incorporating the Middleborough and Victoria Inn sites, and originating in the later first century. To the west the London road was lined for same distance out of the Balkerne Gate by strip buildings, with larger buildings to the rear, and the two shrines by the gate. There may. also have been occupation of this period to the south and the east of the town. The main London road was also the linear focus of an extensive cemetery which contained sophisticated monuments, at least one barrow and a walled cemetery, a combination of structures worthy of a Raman colonia. There was also burial to the north of the river Calne, and aver extensive areas ta the south of the town. Further out there was a complex of temples ta the west of the colon1a. There was also the newly established pottery industry, one of the larger and certainly amongst the mast sophisticated in contemporary Roman Britain. The picture is one of extensive and bustling extra-mural activity. By the fourth century this has all changed. The suburbs have been abandoned, it is almost impassible to find any certain fourth-century extra-mural occupation. The fate of the Sheepen temples is uncertain, same may not have survived to the faurth century, one had its ambulatory suppressed by this date
